For those who think a "new" QB is the answer

Below are the stats for first year starting QB's in Riley's system. Now I didn't compare what Oregon State had around the QB's to what we have coming back next year....

2003-Derek Anderson-51%; 4058 yards; 24-24 TDS/INT

2005-Matt Moore-59%; 2711 yards; 11/19 TDS/INT

2007-Sean Canfield-57%;1661 yards; 9/15 TDS/INT

2008-Lyle Moevao(due to Canfield injury)-59%;2534 yards; 19/13 TDS/INT

2010- Ryan Katz- 60%; 2401 yards; 18/11 TD/INT

2011- Sean Mannion- 64%; 3328; 16/18 TD/INT

The good news is the above QB's turned out to be pretty darn good after their first year(as in time in the NFL good) and perhaps we can expect TA's numbers to get better...the bad news, it would appear Riley's system is not easy to pick up for first year starters and I'm afraid we are going to find this out if someone unseats TA next year or the year after TA graduates. I don't think Riley can roll the dice with a new QB next year as after a losing record this year he did not buy himself much time. If h does decide to roll the dice with a brand new starter, I hope people are prepared for things to get worse before they get better with this offense.

We don't have that person on the roster and as I pointed out above...you should not expect that game manager to show up anytime soon. POB may turn our to be damn good down the road but we are going to have to go thru growing pains(again)...if we bench TA. Game managers work best when you have a dominant defense...that's asking a lot under Banker.

If my memory serves me correctly, TA has had at least three games in which he has thrown 3 or more interceptions and not just flukes but really bad decisions, games that we lost...with a pure game manager at QB, are those games wins? I guess we may find out next year.

Actually, I just want TA to learn to make better decisions. I love TA's athleticism but his decision making is horrible. However, I don't know if this is possible.

Then why in the world are we only recruiting one quarterback for this recruiting cycle? It is obvious the staff has zero confidence in Fyfe, Bush, and Darlington or they would have played based on the numerous errors by Armstrong all season.

We should be taking 2-3 quarterbacks in this recruiting cycle and then HOPE one turns out to be the qb of the future. Recruiting only 1 quarterback for the upcoming signing class based on the current qb talent on the roster is absurd.

if (a big if) we get invited to a bowl ... Fyfe should play .... let Tommy know his current level of decision making isn't acceptable for a QB with 3 years under his belt going into next year

Myself, id be fine with struggles and growing pains with we started O'Brien, at least then theres a real excuse why we are struggling. My guess is uf O'Brien got the start, we keep it simple for him and he wouldn't roll the dice like Tommy would. So with that said, i don't see how it could get worse passing wise.

I want his footwork to improve. You have to be balanced and your feet working with you when throwing the ball. You can't throw the ball north /south with your feet pointing east / west. Then throwing the ball up for gabs so many times.

I think Nebraska needs to go after a QB transfer for next year as POB most likely wont be ready for this offense as a true Freshman.

It's obviously no accident that Riley stated that qb decision making was a key to the game every time he was asked pregame.

That might be a good idea given the lack of confidence the staff has for the rest of the quarterbacks on the roster.

Riley has more problems that just finding a QB

At one point he was known as the coach who took a horrible program and made them competitive however that was fading at OSU and the trend looks to be continuing at NU

From 2002 to 2009 - Riley had a winning percent of 61% which was excellent at OSU - Although he did not win the Pac10 he competed for the title multiple times. He had one 10 win season, one 9 win season and 4 eight win seasons and only had a losing record( 5-6) once

From 2010 to present - It is a different story his winning percent dropped to 46% and he had 4 losing seasons out of 6 with one 9 win season

I could not find any real switch in his assistant ranks, there was an influx of new coaches int he pac12 at the time. However this is when OSU was starting to lose to some schools they had not lost to before and even schools like Eastern washington. Whether the game has past him by and he has not kept up or whatever the reason - It is time for Mike to start contemplating some changes to the way he is doing things. That includes evaluating his coaches, his schemes and even S&C - things need to change or he will continue with the same results that have become normal for him over the last 6 years. If he does not adjust and change, losing seasons will not be tolerated at NU the same way as they were at OSU

A lot of you guys have that instant gratification going on, have to win them all now. With our QBs now and possibly even with O'Brien we are there yet. Maybe O'Brien can come in and make less mistakes then Tommy and help us win a few games that we may have lossed under Tommy but who really knows till it happens. Freshman QBs come in start all the time, some succeed and some fail...at first. We have to face it, we may struggle next year just like this year, myself ud rather struggle with our freshman now and be loaded a couple years from now, then struggle with Tommy next year and then struggle another year or 2 while O'Brien catches on. Get O'Briens struggles over with sooner then later.

We should try to pick up Trevor Knight as a graduate transfer for next year, like Michigan did with Rudock this year. Yes Knight did have quite a few INTs last year, but I have to think he'd be a better fit for this offense than Tommy.

We need to clear some schollies. We r going to have 5 QBs on scholarship next year assuming we don't take anyone in addition to POB.

Over/under on TA interceptions in our house every game is 2.5, and he makes it interesting every freaking time. Cannot win when you have to overcome that every freaking game.

And things are not going to change next year either TA will still at some point in the season make the same bad decisions he had made this year.

I would feel better about handing the keys to a true freshman QB if I thought NU would have any kind of running game next year. But will any RBs other than Newby be coming back, and does our OC think a respectable running attack is worth the bother?

Excited to see what O'Brien brings to the table. But toss him into a game plan that's totally QB-dependent, and I don't see the results being a lot different.
