For those who've spent quality time in Athens/UGA.....

Is Athens the bar to which all SEC college towns aspire?

I was very impressed w/UGA's beauty and Sanford is a nice place to play, but Athens itself....not sure.

It is probably my favorite college town. I also like Columbia and Oxford.

A lot of people dont like Auburn but I do. Heck, I have fun in Baton Rouge.

But yes, Athens is considered the mecca of college towns. In the south anyways.

The one thing that disappointed me was during the game, we left at half, we wanted to sit down and eat and drink, like Veranda or Chimes. Nobody could tell us a place to go except Mellow Mushroom. We found a place that was perfect, damn near empty and we gathered a table and drank and watched the football for six hours before leaving to go to an actual bar. Columbia doesn't do it for me. You have to drive from the stadium to go anywhere fun. I like BR, Athens, Oxford, and Vegas for that reason.

I think so Athens, Oxford, and Baton Rouge are the towns that jump out at me but a lot of that has to do with your hosts/situation. Auburn seemed likes a cool town but I had a miserable experience.

You're right about eating establishments

Downtown has fairly limited eating establishments, at least ones not filled w/100's of drunk frats. Copper Creek was good; but Hershel's pretty much sucked a huge one.

Athens is the only major university with a major athletic program that draws such a large crowd on a regular basis (ie games) that I can think of that followed the Brown model where the campus and town all flows into one little area.

In order for MSU to achieve this type of deal we'd have to reroute 12, knock down Hunter Henry (who's with me), and have that little corridor between Henry and the Bin develop. And then expand on that every decade.

Basically it's impossible for every town that didn't think this through 100 years ago.

ETA: I'm not talking about like Vanderbilt or Georgia Tech which are IN towns. It would be like if Vanderbilt were in the gulch.

I wish I could remember where we ate, it was great but again, we found it nobody recommended it and it was empty. It was attached to an apartment complex or old hotel of some sort.

Vanderbilt is in mid town. Which is way better than the gulch.

I dont get the analogy.

It's just different. There's not continuity between the campus and everything else. It's pretty much here's the campus, here's some off-campus housing and here's some store fronts.

Youre talking about west end. On the back side of campus is mid town and hillsboro village.
The 2 coolest parts of nashville.

Brentwood & Greenhills aren't bad either ....... Athens is a nice campus with amenities close by, the town as a whole is subject to personal taste. Kinda like Gainesville - I love the street in front of the stadium on game day but the rest of the town is open to interpretation
