Here's some food for thought. State gives up the big play, but they have to defend a large number of attempts.

We lead the SEC in pass attempts against our D.... Averaging 44 a game before saturday (UK threw 43 times against us). OM is second at 36/game.

FreeDawg (Beastman) did a good write up on our D in FWTCT.

If this somewhat baits relatively weak passing teams into upping their mix away from their core competency, then great.

Your offense is good so people are behind or have to score to keep pace and no one is going to run on you very well so they have to pass. If you have to be weak that is the best place to be weak at and still dont know if you are a weak or it is just a product of the situations you put the opposition in.

Good points. I think there are two things at work, here. The first is your point, that its hard to run against MSU, teams are behind, and they throw a lot. This accounts for about 60% of it. The second is that MSU has given up too many big plays. This is the other 40%. Part of the problem with big plays is that MSU plays its second teamers more than most teams.

MSU should probably reduce the number of plays for the backups in the secondary and start being more consertative in pass coverage by keeping two safeties deep. If the other team gets first downs, then MSU's defensive line will have more opportunities to create negative plays, but if they get behind us they get touchdowns.

It think the latter is the better solution. The D is great on 3rd down, especially 3rd n long.
