“Christian and I were talking and I told him I can’t remember the last time I’ve been this excited about Nebraska football,” Ramaekers said. “You’re almost giddy like a school kid. I've just got a silly grin on my face.I’m fired up. You cannot ask for a harder worker, a guy with more character. He’s good to the soul, man.”

Said Connealy: “John has, in my mind, never failed at anything he’s set his mind to do. Even if I wasn’t a personal friend of his, he’s a great hire. Any team he’s associated with is lucky to have him.”
Husker Nation doesn’t understand the upside, Ramaekers said. Parrella will be the perfect representative to the public, especially in-state. A guy who can walk into his alma mater, Grand Island Central Catholic, and immediately relate to a 17-year-old prospect.

“I’m a big fan of Riley and the team he’s put together,” Connealy said, “but John, he’s invested in this program. He got his degree from Nebraska. He was a Blackshirt and a captain. You talk about the level of caring, and it’s off the charts for what this program means to John. Not very many people, no matter where they coach, have that level of investment.”
“A couple guys at work asked me what I thought and I said I can guarantee two things: Those kids will work very hard and they will be tough because that’s how John is. He may not be bully tough, but he’s resilient. He will gut it out, broken arm or not.”

Said Connealy: “There was nobody that I ever witnessed that was a harder worker than John. As far as a tough guy, oh my God, you would’ve had to kill him to stop him.”
“He’s just going to take these kids and get them to believe they can walk through a wall,” Ramaekers said. “John will give them the guidance and the skill and the tutoring to get it done. He was just a physical, nasty son-of-a-(gun) on the field. I think he’s gonna put that in our players.”

After reading many morons posts in the LJS and OWH comment section about the hire and the direction of the program I just have to laugh. Lets see, Mcbride, Wistrom, Benning, Raemakers, Connealy, Engelbert, Peter boys, etc..love the hire and the direction of the program. Tough call on who the fans should be listening to and who knows more about being a Blackshirt and Husker pride?? LOL...GBR!!

I can't help but feel like this was a great hire and cannot wait to see this all come together. Loved seeing MR make a needed change, though I hate seeing anyone, and I mean anyone, lose their job. Especially a good one.

Hell yeah!!!!

The minute I read about this hire I got excited! JP is a bridge to the past and MR is embracing that. This is the injection of history we need!

Just a great move by Riley. He has started speaking our language and is learning a ton. He may be comfortable with OSU East but he is willing to go outside his comfort zone and embrace the Nebraska Way. Good times ahead with Parella!

I don't get the excitement. Everyone knows he is now just part of a staff looking to mail it in. Soon the "true" Husker fans will be insulting him for supporting Husker football. How dare he.

This site includes RSS and there have been many.

Don't you guys get it, the ones poo-pooing this hire are freaking geniuses. The only reason they haven't been hired at DONU elevating us to dynasty status, is that as a fan base we are all morons who would be blinded by the brightness of their brilliance.

That and they aren't quite ready to settle into a retirement gig and just collect a paycheck. They are go getters.

I only recognize the name Peter. At some point I need to get on Youtube and catch up on the Husker lore I missed within the first 10 years of my life.
OMG please tell me this is a joke how can anyone understand the standards to which we should achieve and not know those names? I'll help you out, start here and pay close attention.

But I actually watched that game! In fact, it's the first game I ever remember watching, in Verdigre NE with my aunt's family. (I will happily rewatch it though).

As long as Parrella understands that in today's game where most other schools have very good year round weight/strength conditioning programs..and the walk-on is the exception not the rule..I'm fine with the hire. I hope he cares as much or more about getting the next SUH Lavonte David, star types... as he is trying to make sure we secure the best around here. I'm good. I would hope he understands this. We have been missing and are still missing WAY too many stars...TONS of walk-ons are here every year so obviously what takes NU from mediocre to great is landing the mostly out of state stars on defense in the 90s...or on offense stealing away stars from OUs Switzer..the Gill Rozier Fryar years.

Sure we love Parrella types but it's time for us to all get real if we want great again. Parrellas on the DT or should I say 99.9 % of Parrella types...he is the exception of the exceptions...are nothing if not surrounded by other top talent. I heard Steve Sipple talk about Phil Ellis or Mike Andersons.. Connealy, etc.. being great role player on great team..but so what. ..without the great elite others surrounding him mostly from way away from here we are the typical 6-9 win team max which means today not 2 or 3 losses but 4 -5 losses when you win 9

They don't all have to be 4-5 stars today or high 3 star freakish athlete types...but we dang better have a ton in our top 22 and top 44

Nah...Riley has made some really good moves recently. If a guy can learn from his failures, I am good with him. I like the direction I have seen him take in the last few weeks...he's showing that he gets what it means to be a coach at Nebraska. Now if he reverts to incompetent Riley, I will be right back criticizing his stupidity.

Hey @Tulsa Tom, just wanted to let you know Mike Riley is so relieved that you approve of what he's doing. That is all he has been working towards this whole time.

Good. I like the direction he has started taking things. I'm glad he changed his mind and went with Parella...and so are a bunch of Husker fans.

I don't cheer for lovable losers. This team had better win a lot more games with that pathetically easy schedule next season or I will be cheering "HELL YEAH" to the whole staff being fired.

"level of investment.

This right here. You could pay JP $20K a year at Nebraska and he would work just as hard and be just as happy. Read the article about implementing the BLACKSHIRTS at Northern Michigan. Add into it his experience at succeeding at the position at the highest levels (technical knowledge), ability to teach/coach proven by past experience (I know at lower levels), and his character and I don't know how anybody could not see this as possibly the best hire this staff could have made for this football program.

Pathetically easy? I would say that its a comparable schedule to most years for us.

Pathetically easy?

Fresno State, Wyoming, and Maryland, probably easy wins.

I would hope Illinois, Minnesota and Purdue at home are victories.

Indiana, Wisky, NW, Iowa, and OSU on the road, and Oregon at home? As of today, I'm not counting on anything right now.
