Despite the $, he is probably emotionally crushed along with his family.

Honestly, they had to know it was coming for weeks now. Not that it makes it much easier but at least it wasn’t out of the blue. I feel bad more for his family but moving around from team to team is the life of college and pro coaching.

Loyalty ended when teams started paying players. I wish it weren’t so, but sadly I think expecting loyalty from players anymore is a fool’s errand. Allar was loyal and look what it did for him. It potentially ruined his football career.
Yup

It makes a lot of sense for sure, but I think it is a possibility that he would look for a new beginning in another part of the country. Perhaps Oklahoma State makes a lot of sense taking a program that truly is in the toilet located very close to all that high school football talent in Texas.
He’s an east coast guy. I could be wrong, but Stillwater, OK doesn’t seem like it would be all that appealing to him in my opinion.

Franklin had to be fired and it had to happen now. You cannot allow his continued presence to drive the fan base away and destroy recruiting. That would be a compete disaster. It would take Penn State may years to recover from that.

At this point, I would like to see Penn State make an all out effort to get Cignetti. He has Pennsylvania roots and knows the state well. And knows many of the state’s top coaches and programs. Whether he would leave Indiana at this point would likely be a tough sell but at this point make the try anyway.

I tend to agree - it is big business and with a $700M stadium expansion underway, they can't let the fan base drift away. Franklin is good at rebuilding but is clearly blocked at getting the program to the next level. It is no different in business, some guys are good at creating a business, others better than maintaining and growing.

For Cignetti - he's 65 years old. How many years do you think he will go? I think you need to get at least 5 years out of the next coach (unless he immediately flops).

And Franklin took advantage of his loyalty...should be fired just for that

Hmm. I guess you forgot all the good commits Franklin got over the years. FYI. They announced at the game yesterday that there are 49 former Lions in the NFL currently. But what does the NFL know? BCS PSU knows more than they do.
Yeah, and all of these great recruits since 2017 are 0 -8 against OSU, 0-2 against Oregon and Oregon was very beatable this season, and 3-4 against Michigan.

It’s a moot point anyway, because most if not all of the next two recruiting classes are going to decommit, so I don’t even know why this is news. You just have to accept it as a necessary evil to replacing a coach.

Hopefully, like Cignetti did, the new coach can bring in a lot of his players and recruits and use the portal.

That's his problem. He was given every opportunity to succeed to failed.
I hope for the rest of his life he regrets talking Allar into returning instead giving of doing what was best for Drew
I hope for the rest of his life he regrets the countless poor decisions he's made
I don't believe he will. I think you all have made him into something he wasn't as a person. He was beyond selfish.
Why should he regret talking Allar into returning? What an idiotic post.

I can imagine today in Tallahassee there is more pressure on Norvell from the AD and more pressure on the AD from wealthy donors to make a move. I can imagine in Bloomington Cignetti’s agent is telling their AD that he is expecting a call from PSU and it’s time to again renegotiate the contract.

Because it wasn't what was best for Drew. It was horrible advice that he gave him for Franklin's good--not Drew's. it's why no recruit should want to play for him

Cignetti has a grudge against PSU based on his father's feud with Paterno when he was a coach at IUP. The grudge carried forward to his sons. Probably not happening but everyone has their price right? I think we need someone younger.
I'd like to learn more about this feud. I googled cignetti Paterno feud but couldn't find anything.

The hire must be a home run hire. Someone who attracts high school kids AND the best of those in the portal. Someone who moves the needle. If this hire is a high potential, but hasn't done anything yet, I think it will be a much longer rebuild. With the coaching change, I believe most of next year's starters aren't on the current roster.

I'm not excited by names like Rhule, Schiano, Golden, or even Diaz. The first phone call has to be Urban Meyer. Meyer has to say, "No" before you look anywhere else. Meyer increases HS recruiting interest. Meyer intrigues the portal. Meyer is younger than Cignetti, younger than Saban.

No, I don't think he's a better person than James. You can be disappointed (Franklin), but it's better than being irrelevant (wrong hire). If PSU is really knocking on the door, go after someone who has already been in the room.

Is this the first HC that Penn State Football has ever fired? (Well, other than Joe, who I don't consider having been "fired" as such.) Who did Rip Engle take over from?

Make any other year in recruiting, there’s going to be plenty of de commits. You never know, these guys might like the new hire and come back. Either way, I wouldn’t worry about recruiting for two months.

Question for folks ... If PSU was not doing $700 million stadium renovations do you think JF would still be coaching PSU? Let him finish the season and see if he could turn it around? Did the stadium renovations force PSU's hand?
