Until four weeks ago, Byron Guidry had no clue how much interest a major college football coaching job would attract.
But then, he also didn't know he had the old cellphone number of Archie Manning, Ole Miss football legend and co-chairman of the committee searching for the Rebels' next head coach.
"I've gotten so many text messages that I've had to delete a lot of them because I was running out of space," said Guidry, 37, a New Orleans native now living in a suburb of Houston, Texas.
"A lot of these people who call and text, I have no clue who they are. Here's a text that says, 'Archie, I have tremendous love for Ole Miss. I would love to serve as their next head coach. Any consideration would be greatly appreciated.' It's signed, 'Hugh Freeze.' Do you know who he is?"
Freeze is Arkansas State's first-year head coach and considered to be in the mix for the vacancies at Ole Miss and the University of Memphis. Freeze declined comment, saying he was focused on today's game against Troy.
