I look at OM and think they could be a good team next year. I then look at their schedule and a 1-6 start is very possible. Brutal front end. I don't think that happens but it's fact their 1rst 7 sucks. Is Freeze looking at the same thing and tempering fan expectations? (From Reb road trip tour)

Since he's been an Ole Miss fan for a long time, he realizes that their over inflated ego's cause extremely high, and in most cases impossible expectations for their athletic teams. Most likely, he wants to get the fan base ready to lose some games next year. They can't live off the egg bowl high (beating a mediocre team and charging the field) and the bowl win (beating an ok Pitt team at "home") forever. Maybe he is actually the voice of reason for the North Korean style fantasyland they live within.

1-6 is very realistic. When the ball starts rolling downhill it's hard to stop. The Vandy game is the key. Vandy loses a lot but has homefield advantage.

2012 was fool's gold for TSUN. They played the SEC well because it was not ready for Freeze's offense. They played A&M close because (of the turnovers, of course) they play similar styles on offense. Also, they judge by the way they played LSU. I recently went back and watched the State-LSU game. Except for the two turnovers (Milton's fumble and the final pick-6), we played LSU just as well as TSUN.

So, I look for a talent upgrade but less surprise out of Freeze's bunch. A losing season in Year 2 eliminates the line "our program is moving in the right direction."

At Vandy, at Texas, at Alabama, at Auburn.....and six straight home games? That might be the most retarded schedule I've ever seen.

Also, we aren't the only SEC team from the State of Mississippi with two Thursday night games. At least we don't get to lose to Vanderbilt on national TV.

It's very premature analysis, but I have them going 6-6 next year....but to do so they have to beat Auburn on the road, Arkansas, and one of Missouri or MSU. They won't beat Vandy because Vandy owns them (it is fun to type that). They will beat SEMO, but will lose to Texas and Alabama. Auburn is a toss up because it's on the road. They will follow that up with two sure losses to A&M and LSU. They should handle Idaho and probably Arkansas and Troy. They should be able to beat Missouri, before dropping the egg bowl.

The true swing game is Auburn. That's the difference between them starting 2-5 and 1-6. If they win that one, they should get to six wins.

Freeze being a fan of Ole Miss for a long time...yet another myth advanced by the liberal media.

Fun fact of the day: Hugh Freeze was a big fan of MSU and Jackie Sherrill in the early 90s. This is first hand, not heresay.

We should be a better team, yet could start 2-5 very realistically. We could also win out our next five after that, but I'm thinking 6-7 wins would make me happy. That road start is brutal.

There has been a lot of momentum in Oxford. I would love to see something slow them down. I think they will finish very close to last year.

2 points of contention: 1) TSUN has two ROAD Thursday night games - the polar opposite from MSU's situation. 2) They have a better chance to beat LSU at home than Auburn on the road. They play @ Bama the week before while Auburn has an open date. Team's usually have a letdown/meltdown after playing Bama.

Your first point I will concede. I didn't think of that. Your second point is ridiculous. I'm not saying they can't beat LSU, but they will be a much tougher opponent than Auburn, regardless of where they are played or who they play the week before.

Almost all coaches poor-mouth, even Saban. But the Bears do have a tough schedule, even though they have a pretty good team. He's probably being realistic for the most part. But they're going to do a lot better than 1-6.

They should be pretty talented, and the players should be fairly familar with Malzahn's offense. Plus, it's much easier to go from Pro Stye > Spread than Spread > Pro Style. I think they'll score plenty of points, but probably win between 5 and 8 games next year.

He said last season anything over 3 wins was gravy. He also said he had more talent on his AR State team than what he inherited. He's good at coach speak.

He's just being a smart coach

A lot of Ole Miss fans have sky high expectations for next year and going forward. Success is very hard won in the SEC West. They may stumble next year record wise, but so may we. It's a very hard row to hoe.

I'll give my obligatory Ole Miss fan story:

Over lunch at Walker's in Jackson my brother, an Ole Miss grad, told me "Y'all should be glad we're going to win a National Championship in the next couple of years, because it will elevate football in Mississippi".

Tamping down expectations is smart, you always get accolades for beating expectations.

Think back to first years of Mullen, Franklin, Freeze, and Sumlin compared to the previous year (Muschamp the exception). A new coach usually adds a little life and novelty to a program.

B-but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but ... Drebin... LSU is their "true rival".** Ridiculous? Obviously you underestimate how difficult it is to win on the road in the SEC.

But seriously, with Auburn's talent and Malzahn/Johnson calling the shots, Auburn will make exponential progress next year. Auburn - not OSU - will be State's first true test of the season.

They should be used to losing already. Remember, they were 6-6 last year (7-6 counting the bowl). That's not stellar by anybody's measurement. They got excited only because they won more than 3 games a year, and finally won a conference game. And of course, because the beat us.

I think most teams won't sleep on the Rebels this year. OM had a lot of close games that shouldn't have been that close. Bama hung 50 on them two years ago and they struggled with them last year. LSU mercy kneed them with 5 minutes still left in game two years ago and struggled with them last year. OM was the beneficiary of teams looking ahead last year. Won't happen this year. Freeze knows that.

Good points rabiddawg. The other thing that both OM and MSU will have to deal with is the league getting better around us. Auburn and Arkansas had quit last year and were pathetic. Both those teams will be exponentially better. Auburn has 10x the talent of OM and they went from dreadful to 7 wins in 1 year. I fail to understand why people don't think Auburn will be pretty good

I honestly think JFF has a huge bullseye on him this year. He may not make it past the third game of the season. If he is injured A&M will spiral because they have no QB after him with any experience. I know Bama will want to destroy him. So OM and State may get benefit of playing a JFF'less A&M

Because they have two mediocre quarterbacks and no clear starter heading into fall, because they have a new coach and offensive system, because they lost RB Onterio McCalebb, WR Emory Blake, TE Phillip Lutzenkirchen, DE Corey Lemonier and LB Darren Bates? I'm not sure. I've got this one down as a W.

Wasn't everyone penciling in ole miss as a win before last year? New coaches can make a huge difference. Auburn has talent. Auburn could be really bad or really good. Don't sleep on them...
