People on message boards talking about it and one of the nation's top college football writers talking about is different, to me at least.

I'm gonna go ahead and assume he's gone.

Because it seems like we never can keep anybody worth a damn in recruiting or coaching.

Wonder why absolutely zero coaches from Ole Miss are being mentioned for any openings? Ya know, being the best collection of coaches on the planet and all...

Funny you bring it up. Out of all of their coaches, I saw the thief mentioned yesterday as a candidate somewhere but don't recall now where it was

He was the first name brought up on the FSU Podcast I posted earlier this week. Those Tomahawk Nation guys are pretty plugged in.

Let's just hope they promote from within.

If we can convince Collins to stay, we should definitely have an announcement ceremony. He can choose our hat over FSU's. We can all celebrate like we just won the Egg Bowl.

Why? If we're successful, the fact is we will occasionally lose a coach to one of the really major programs. I hope he stays at MSU, but if not, with the defense we have coming back next year, I'm sure we'll be able to attract a good pool of coaches interested in the job.

I'm not saying this is an apples-to-apples comparison...

but the last time we had a big-time up-and-comer defensive coordinator who left for a much more prestigious program, that guy fell flat on his face and can't even get a head coaching job now at small schools.

If Collins goes to FSU and has a great defense... how much credit will he really get? All of those players are from the previous regime and it could be perceived that he just walked into a good situation.

However, if he takes our defense next year and improves upon what we did this year, he'd be in line to get a head coaching gig pretty easily at just about any non-BCS school and maybe even a few BCS schools.

If the money is too good, then I can't really blame him. But if he leaves in an effort to eventually get a head coaching gig, he might be making a mistake.

Hope he stays, though. He's a helluva coach.

While I don't want to lose Collins, I'm more worried about the fact we could lose two coordinators and pretty good recruiters at the same time. Say what you will about Les and his actually being the offensive coordinator, but it's not like he was just going to Boston Market all the time. He had some kind of job duties that were important enough for him to have been around this long.

That would be a pretty big hit to take at once I would think. Not to mention a buddy that is a UGA fan told me that Deshea was getting a lot of mention on their boards lately.

Unfortunately for us this is the next big hurdle to overcome in the SEC in my opinion. While the assistant situation is always going to be somewhat in flux, when we have success keeping them will be more difficult if we don't start paying them more.

couldn't stop Auburn when it counted...........

Couldn't adjust to OSU. Gave up 60 to LSU. Gave up 50 to A&M. Struggled to stop BG and KY.

Now, all of the sudden, the 2014 recruiting effort and football season hang on what Collins does. I don't want the guy to leave, quite the contrary, but I find it odd how he is now the key.

I think it's more for staff continuity than anything else. And momentum. You take away both of your coordinators - just doesn't look that great to me.

I agree.........

it won't be good if he leaves. That's what happens when you hire young up and coming guys. If we want somebody to stick around, he needs to be a bit older, with family nearby and looking to move closer to home. If we can find that perfect match, Mullen then needs to treat the guy with some respect.

That's just because saban needed him to figure out to stop Hugh's basketball on grass.**

Alot of post on here about giving assistants raises and bitching and moaning about it. It appears that it really doesn't matter. If they are good and get a chance to go somewhere else, they're gone, regardless of what we pay. Mullen has to be given alot of credit for selecting good corches, but that's all he can do. I want to believe that Starkville doesn't suck as a place to live but think that has a lot to do with it and it actually hurts to face up to it, but "facts is facts."

maybe i should bite the bullet and go to the fsu message boards and dissuade them.**

gotta admit that it would suck to lose collins. he turned a corner in my mind and his stock has sky-rocketed ever since the bama game. in the end, i suspect that fsu may go with more experience on this one. i have nothing to back that up and jimbo knows defense, but my gut tells me, 1 year in FBS as a coordinator may not be enough and another equally impressive coach with the benefit of experience might edge him out. lets hope that is the case. its getting really old replacing key coaches all the time.
