OXFORD -- C.J. Johnson walks into the dining hall in the Ole Miss football facility smiling, telling fond stories about his first deer rifle and the puke-inducing ritual many Southern boys and girls anticipate and fear: the smearing of first blood on his face. Broad-shouldered, with a quick sense of humor, the star defensive end laughs when asked what first attracted him to Oxford.

"The women," he says.

Shoulda seen that one coming.

That was outstanding.

This one got me...
The paramedics got him on a gurney and began wheeling him to the door. As they crossed the threshold, Jack understood what was happening. His mind never failed, only his body. He waved his hand, leaving behind a museum to his dear Mavis, and he boomed out, "Goodbye, house."

"In that Jack Cristil voice," Andrew says.

"Puke-inducing"? I've seen many, perhaps hundreds of young hunters get their faces bloodied after taking their first deer. Don't recall a single one throwing up because of it or even come close as far as I could tell. To a man they were generally grinning from ear-to-ear.

Only on gut shots, I have seen

It. Usually depends on the master of ceremonies and how big of a sadist he is .

The article was OK but why does every out of state journalist/TV personality/reporter/writer head straight for the Delta when writing about the state of Mississippi? Why is it never Tupelo, Biloxi, Hattiesburg, Madison, or some other much less ****** place than Tunica or Clarksdale?

There are thousands of generic type towns like Tupelo, Hattiesburg and Madison in every state in the union. The Delta, bless it`s heart, is one the very few unique things about Mississippi. Shabby, funky, depressing, eccentric....whatever, it`s different.

I get your point but damn, that is all the nation ever sees or reads about when it comes to Mississippi. Even the feature on GameDay showed nothing but cotton fields, barns, and tractors. The rest of the nation probably thinks there are no two story buildings in Mississippi.

Because that dog's got personality

...and personality goes a long way.

I lived all over the state, and the Delta & the Coast are the two most distinct "places."

and amazingly, the Delta is going to feature prominently in Wright Thompson pieces.
I've also notice that folks from northeast MS are more prone to being bugged about that sort of thing.

Although I will note one thing: other states just get to have winning football teams without them being overwrought metaphors for the entire state's plane of existence.
When Ohio State wins, nobody treks out to Youngstown to examine the skeletons of America's rusting industrial past. When Cicny was going to BCS games, there weren't many ruminations on how the scrappy team united an all too fractious city, blighted but rising... you get the picture.
Hopefully Mississippi will get to the point where it's just football teams kicking *** again.

You've peeked my interest. How have you seen hundreds of kids with deer blood on their face. Do you run a survivalist elementary school?

I have to completely disagree with this. Natchez and Vicksburg have plenty of personality. Not once have I cruised up 61 and thought to myself, man I'm sure glad I got past those rolling hills, antebellum homes and towering bluffs overlooking the largest river in the US and got to Rolling Fork where the featureless drive looks like Kansas, Nebraska, and all of Baldwin County, AL that's not coastal.
