Quote from Texas fan:
"This is probably a ploy by ESPN trying to see if they can force Texas' hand by getting Aggy to join the SEC. Texas isn't going to join an academic JOKE for a conference like the SEC. We don't fit in culturally, or more importantly, academically.

Texas however does fit in culturally & academically in the Pac10. Texas already has strong ties with the pac10 in research, and business schools.

Again, this is just aggy thinking they're on the same level of Texas, and ESPN trying to sucker Texas into joining a joke academic conference.

Not happening."

Gosh, he sounds smart. Why people want to go down this road I never understand. To me..academic comparisons is kinda like the Top 25, once your out that top echolon its kinda irrelevent.

gives a **** about their academic reputation over here.

Additionally, I didn't know the schools of the Big 12 comprised a veritable midwestern Ivy League.

It's an athletic conference. It is for competitions of sport. Cheese and biscuits.

There really are a bunch of flag burners at UT. It's kind of like Berkeley with better music and better food.

I've never understood that argument either. Conferences these days are solely for TV marketability and making tons of cash for the members. What exactly does that have to do with academic reputation? Being in the SEC hasn't exactly turned Vandy into diploma mill.

Exactly. I am friggin sick of hearing about academics when it comes to major college athletics. Damn, academics doesnt matter.

The only time it matters if you are in a league with others of your ilk is if the you are a school that is so strict in its entrance requirements that they put you at a recruiting disadvantage versus the rest of the conference.
And even then, its only kinda true in many situations.

Northwestern is the smallest and best in the Big10 in terms of academics on may scales, yet it is still able to be a conference player in both football and basketball. In football they have been in the mix a lot recently and though they havent made the NCAA in basketball, they are still beating others in the conference, showing they can compete still.

****, Duke manages to be an elite university while still waxing the ACC every year in basketball.

But the Ivy League is a conference that legitimately needs others like em since they are non scholarship as well as hella strict in entrance. Patriot league too, since they have great schools and are non scholarship for football.

The Big10 is known as some collection of public ivies...BS. I grew up right in the middle of that conference and know dozens of people that graduated from the schools...nothing special to say the least. No dumbasses that cant read, but certainly no wicked smaat people either.

thesis on how, in addition to how much of an elite university UT is, Austin is sooooooooooooooo much cooler than (insert ANY other city here) and how much So Cal's Mexican food sucks compared to Tex-Mex? Because then the stereotype would be complete.
*edit: I promise I didn't read Rebel7's response in this post while writing this. Which makes it even funnier.

Now excuse me while I ramble and go way out on a limb:
Let's compare two football players. Vince Young vs. Myron Rolle. If we follow this guy's logic, then the wrong one is the Rhodes Scholar, since one of the schools is vastly superior to the other one in the field of academics. But this guy might be on to something. I suggest that Texas, Michigan, Cal, Virginia, N. Carolina, Colorado, and ...Illinois?-I'm running out of "elite public universities" off the top of my head- (and Duke, Stanford, Vandy and Northwestern if you want some private school flavor) go off and form the Smart Kids Conference, and let the rest of us cretins fight amongst ourselves.

is akin to Forrest Gump bragging about his astrophysicist 3rd cousin. Just because he might have somebody smart in the family doesn't mean he's still not a retard.

ever been a part of maybe they just should go independent. When you always think you are bigger than the conference you play in it seldoms works out very well.

They've been in two conferences. The SWC lost money at an alarming rate, and I make the argument that this **** going on now is all Jim Delaney's fault.

the more i learn about them, the less I want them.

I am liking the A&M to the West and an East Coast type team to the East idea though. 14 teams is ok by me at this point. A&M is another Auburn/Arkansas type team too. Solid, but always beatable. The MS teams don't need another juggernaut in the fray.

I knew the Longhorns were full of themselves but I didn't know it was at that level of douchbaggery. We all know they want no part of the SEC because they are scared of the competition.

Which works out well because our life in the SEC is hard enough without having to deal with another powerhouse.

If the SEC must expand, I like the TAMU and another east team scenario.
