We did exactly what we were suppose to do and held up our end of the deal....Mullen didn`t deliver....I hate the way coaches are paid and I think their contracts should be based at least 50% on performance...like any other highly paid management person in this country.

I say pay HUD or petrino 3million then set aside another few million for some good assistance. They make their money back by winning, winning big bowls, and putting butts in the seat. And also if they are winning big games more people are willing to donate to help keep that rolling. I been looking at HUD coaching record, stats and etc., gotta say he gets it done. And I think it would be fitting, ole miss got their home grown man, and we will have ours. That would make that rivalry that much more intense. And I'd like to thank dan for getting out of the hole but getting HUD to bring it home is what it's gonna take

Just out of curiosity, where is MSU getting $5mil to pay a football staff?

i propose that we lose if we DONT do something. doing nothing and pretending the wheels arent falling off is the worst thing we can do at this point. mullens system is broken and most disconcertingly, he is exposed for being a mediocre coach with a bad recruiting resume in a league stocked with ELITE coaches using ELITE talent. and if that wasnt enough, dan simply does not grasp the basic or obvious. hes an average coach...maybe even slightly below average. he gets goaded into 2 point conversions, he claims to be a special teams coach, but our sp teams suck outside of a talented punt team and is highlighted by a kicker that cant even hit a 35 yarder.....all while our halftime punt pass and kick participant drills one from the same distance....he will go for it on 4th and 1.5 on our 20, but wont go for it on 4th and 2 on our 45, i could wreck the man all day, but thats not what i want to do. i wish him well, but this is a nuclear arms race and we are sitting here with a pea shooter. saying "hey, this pea shooter has done fine by me thus far" is not a strategy for success when weaponized drones are buzzing over our heads as we cower in our little mud hole.

Dan is an above average coach. I will continue to believe this until he loses to an inferior program. He does some things well, and some things poorly, but he's still above average. He is even average in the sec. You put him at a bigger program and he gets enough talent that his lack of creativity with play calling and his overly conservative approach in tight games becomes less damaging, as any weakness in recruiting also becomes less damaging.

He can be good at msu if we give him enough money for assistant coaches and convince him to let an oc take the lead with play calling.

Congrats...You are the smartest poster on this board. You said it so much better than I did. MSU has to make up its mind whether its willing to accept mediocrity and be a perennial mid-tier football program nationally and low-tier football program in the SEC or if we are going to grow a pair and get in the arms race. You can't stand idly by and hope things shake out well. To be a winner you have to push the envelope. I can't stand Ole Miss but they did just this and I'm positive had Freeze not worked out they would have canned him quickly and tried to find another coach until they caught lightning in a bottle (which they have done with Freeze). Now, it's paying dividends. Everyday you choose to win or you choose to lose. I hope my alma maters administration chooses to have a winning football program.

SEC is King in football, not basketball.
It's a totally different animal when it comes to hiring for football in the SEC.

I don't get the level of job security they are given. When you are paid 7 figures to do coach a game why should you get offended when the school doesn't guarantee your job for the next 4 years? I would love more performance based contracts, but the only performance the AD cares about is number of dollars coming in. If we brought in an up and coming coach and gave him a base $1MM contract with $50k for beating a 1-AA team, $100k for beating a non-BCS team, $200k for beating a BCS team or SEC team, $50k for each team beaten that finishes the season with a winning record and even more money for post-season wins, then we would probably have a very fired up coach. Incentive based contracts aren't new, but most of the time the incentives are afterthoughts. An incentive-heavy contract has never been tried before and would be bold in this world. If the coach isn't happy with the salary, adjust the base some and make the incentives heavier. Under the arrangement above, running the table in the regular season this year would result in at least $3.05MM in salary, probably more once you add in incentives for making the SECCG and the bonus for beating winning teams.

I wouldnt be against paying part on performance, but tying any part of a coach's contract to recruiting rankings is beyond dumb. Its flat out stupid as can be.
Recruiting rankings, as has been shown time and again(especially in football), are anything but an accurate depictor of success. Yes, the perennial top programs typically have a higher rating for their recruits overall, but we are not a top program. Not many programs are top programs. Paying a coach for successfully landing players based on what they did in HS does MSU no good. Pay the coach for successfully developing players into a winning program. Who the 17 gives a 17 how the recruiting classes rank if the Ws arent following?

A coach that is only working on 1 or 2 year's of contract means they dont have the confidence of the administration. Recruiting on that sort of contract is a killer.
Recruits choose the coach more than the school(especially in basketball) and if the school doesnt have confidence and isnt willing to buy into the coach for at least the length of time that player will be projected to be at school, that creates a ton of issues when trying to convince the prospect to sign.

Mullen COULD be a great coach if he had Florida/Tenn/LSU assistants. He currently has USM assistants. There's no way in hell he'd take less money and relinquish control to heavy hitting guys... so time to move on.

Basketball vs football program comparisons need to stop. 2012 basketball vs 2008 football is fair, but 2013 football would be an attractive job for a guy looking to take the jump to the big leagues.

When freeze was hired he was given $1 million base and 100k for SEC win and 50k for other wins. His contract was very incentive heavy. The problem with those coaches is very few people take them. A coach looks at the big picture and when being someone to MSU he already knows he has the deck stacked against him
