Great books...will eventually be classics. Martin is a great author and knows how to blend his characters in such a way that there are no fully "bad" or "good" characters. New season starts in April !

That scene when they killed Stark was the best television I have seen in a long time. I haven't been to sleep since season 1 ended. Winter is coming.

i'm about 90% of the way done with clash of kings (book 2) and it's outstanding thus far. season 2 is going to be outstanding. and from what i've been told my others, a storm of swords is even better, so the next 2 seasons should be incredible. i wouldn't say it's breaking bad level yet, but it's up there with mad men, homeland, breaking bad, and boardwalk empire as the current best shows on tv.

Classics. I didn't know how the last two books would work considering the way they were divided but they're fantastic.

First season was excellent and it made me read the books. Midway through book 5 now and have an even better appreciation of season 1.

There is a great fan site that recaps the episodes from a reader and a non-reader perspective.

I'd almost get HBO for it alone. But, I shall continue watching it via bittorrent downloading after each episode airs.

I've read the first book, and it was great. I'm about 1/3 of the way through book 2, Clash of Kings, now. I'm trying to finish it before season 2 starts. So far, it's awesome. I noticed HBO has already renewed it for seasons 3 & 4. Supposedly book 3 is big enough for 2 seasons, so there's speculation they'll be Storm of Swords into seasons 3 & 4. Word of warning, though: don't get too attached to the characters. Martin has no problem killing off absolutely anyone.

Translated well into TV so far.

Eddard's death is the first big one, but not the last by any means. There's plenty of shocking ones, and one in particular in the middle of the book that's the biggest kick in the gut in the entire series, yet that somehow ends up making the series better, not worse. Also, the latest book ended with an even crazier death, which made me even sadder because of how much you end up connecting with that character (NOTE: this is not a spoiler, you end up connecting with tons of characters. Even Lannisters and traitors get their own chapters).

Yes, the actress that plays Danny is incredibly hot. By the time their done with the series, the actress that plays Sansa will probably also be hot (She was 14 when the first season was filmed). The actress that plays Cerci is hot, but not as hot as described in the books. Look out for Margerie Tyrell next season (Natalie Dormer) - she's got a unique look, and is smoking hot. Loved her in The Tudors. Also, Carice van Houten will play Melisandre, who's supposed to be a smoking hot, fiery (literally!) redhead. We'll see how she does there.

I really enjoyed the first three books a lot. The fourth book is decent, but kind of a let down after the long wait because it excludes stories from most of the characters you grow to like. The 5th book was pretty good as well.

I would imagine that if the tv series makes it that far, they will probably have to do a mishmash of the 4th and 5th book into just one series, or do them together over the course of two series. They couldn't do just the 4th book as a season. To many charactersaren'tin it.

It cost HBO $60M for the first season. That's insane for a TV show. The ratings were good, but i'm hoping all the new fans turn the ratings even higher for this season. With that, HBO can commit to more seasons, probably 10 in all as it will take about that many years for GRRM to finish the series. They could split the 3rd season, though i'd think they'd be better off increasing the number of episodes in that season. Do books 4 and 5 as three seasons, adding some stuff from the begginning of book 6 (as that's how GRRM intended it before book length became a publishing problem). That's only 5 years from now when that 7th season would be starting, so at two seasons for that you're talking 7 years from now for the start of the 7th book, which probably won't be out by then.

It is HBO though, so they're not tied to one season per year. We may just have to endure some 1.5 or 2 year waits between seasons.</p>

Having to re-read the other ones because it has been so long since the previous book. That 17'er takes FOREVER to write a book. Love em though.

</div><div>The problem with that is that with the series, you're dealing with a lot of kid actors. You'd run into continuity issues as the kids would grow a good deal, and not an enormous amount of times passes in the actual story line. </div><div>
</div><div>I've heard rumors that story-wise, at some point there is going to be a five year break in the books' story arc to let all the characters grow up. I don't know how much stock I'd put into that though.</div>

Most of the actors (Jon, Rob, Theon, Joffrey, Daenarys) aren't really kids (remember thekids on the show are 18ish, played by 20-something actors, while in the book they were 14ish), so they won't age that much. Some of the rest play characters that mature in the story so some aging will work. I don't want to potentially spoil who does or doesn't die, so i won't go into details, buti can think of only one where it might be a problem. And for that character a 7 year run or a 10 year run won't make any difference, as thatactor will age the most early on.

The 5 year break was GRRM's original plan for the beginning of book 4. but after a year of writing he gave up on it, because he didn't like putting so much emphasis on flashbacks. that's one of the reasons that book took so long to come out, he completely started over on it. there won't be one at the beginning of book 6 (leaked sample chapters prove that). There could be one part way into that book, but i highly doubt it. The reason GRRM stated for having one is mooted by book 5.

Besides, if there are long waits, it'd be at the tail end of the series, when the handful of kids have mostly grown up already.

The show is also very good. Martin will have to speed up his writing though if the series can keep going. The last book took about 5 years. Supposedly only two left in the series though so we'll see. Seeing the success of Game of Thrones gives me a glimmer of hope that we'll eventually see a similar adaptation to The Wheel of Time.

you got a link to HBO renewing it? i know they made a statement that they'll keep making seasons so long as GRRM keep writing, but that's obviously non-binding.

If you're talking about a certain Commander of the Night Watch, I'm about 99% certain he's not dead.

so that they could finish the show in the event of his death. must've been a stipulation HBO insisted on. and i believe he's stated that the books are not to be published if he dies and doesn't finish them, so if, God forbid, he dies too soon, we may end up with only the TV show continuing. would be a unique situation.

Arya and Bran seem to be major characters throughout. Although Rickon disappears, he may come back but he could be replaced with another actor i guess.

Unlike Robert Jordan, Martin doesn't want his story finished by another should he die. In fact I think he stated that his notes will be burned. Bastard better live another 5-10 years at least.

Please tell me Theon Greyjoy gets his prick cut off. At least an ear or nose...anything painful. As much as I cant stand that prick, I like his sister. I hope to see more than her. I've already lost two of my five favorite characters, i hope Arya, Jon, and the Imp have better luck from here on out( I still have about 200 pages to go in book two)

Let's put it this way. I don't think anyone comes close in suffering physically and mentally as Theon. You will eventually pity him by the time you are caught up.

I was thinking of Bran as the potential problem. I don't see Arya's actor's aging as a problem, as that character goes thru so much, that any aging should match her character's maturation. ditto for Sansa.

Bran though, it would be weird to see him where he is in Book 5 as much older. though since he's paralyzed they can hide any height growth.

they can recast Tommen later. no one would notice.

Especially with GRRM, nothing is ever certain. I definitely didn't expect the Red Wedding or to ever grow to like Jaime Lannister. Lots of hints in the books however point at Mr. Snow being both of Stark and Targaryen blood and even more point to him being Azor Ahai reborn rather than Stannis.

The Greyjoys, that is.

Yes, Theon suffers. More than anyone else in the series. I also hated him at the point you're at. Now, you can't help but feel sorry for him. Spoiler hint: It rhymes with meek...

Asha also gets some good chapter time, although neither of them are the ironman I'm most curious about the fate of in the next book.

With Tyrion and Jon - you're <span style="font-style: italic;">probably</span> safe. If I had to name a "main character" for the series, those two and Danny would all tie. Arya's story, along with that of one other character I won't name, get really crazy, and have a lot of, for a lack of a better word, magic, involved with them. And not just the red priest kind.

I'm guessing you're saying that Eddard was one of your favorites, but out of curiosity, who was the other? But don't answer in title to avoid a spoiler :p

and will start Storm of Swords. Watched season 1 and after began reading the books. They are fantastic and the tv show is the best all-around quality production out there now. Can't wait to see how the second book translates into screen. If season 1 cost $60 million then I can't imagine what this costs with battles, new locations etc.

Winter is coming......
