OK, I'm going to do a bit of shameless market research. I'm prepared for some sarcastic answers so bring them on, but hopefully some of you can give me some solid input. I figure we don't have much better to talk about since its an off week.

If you could pay a per game fee to have just a TV w/ HD direcTV service placed at your tent for the game wherever your tent is (probably higher density/central tailgating areas only), is that something you would be interested in? The TV would be powered and connected to satellite signal.

If we did offer this service, what is a fair, and reasonable price for this service in your opinion?

I feel like this would be a really valuable service to folks on campus and I think i've figured out a way to do it where I could have a reasonable price and still make a profit. What do you think?

A few Devil's in the Details type questions

What time would you anticipate setting this up on game day?
What time would you anticipate taking it down?
How are you providing power to this set up and could the tailgate plug other things into the power source?
What size TV is it?
What's the cost if an "accident" happens during the day and the TV/set up is damaged?
Is someone available to troubleshoot if the signal is lost during the day?

Just a few questions off the top of my head but I'm intrigued and would be interested in learning more.

When we tailgate we usually have a minimum of 3 families involved. I don't think any of them would balk at $20 each to watch TV all day. So when you think of it like that I'd plop down up to $60 to be able to watch some tube at a picnic.

I'm assuming that you've thought of the various issues (rain, stealing, power sources, etc.). For something like a 3pm game, would it include before and after game usage?

I wouldn't name sat service provider for sake of discussion. I don't know your plan but once you reach a certain # of receivers on one account the ears in commercial dept. perk up and the pricing model changes drastically. It goes from $ per receiver on a residential acct. to $ per # of seats/viewers per establishment on a commercial account.

All good questions. The devil is certainly in the details.

We we would prob setup at 8 on day games 10 on night. Pull the plug 3 hrs after.


We would provide power to our gear but not open use. We may could do open use at an up charge.

Most likely we'd have a team of tech support guys to monitor things.

Most likely renters would have to leave their drivers license to ensure they returned everything. In practice we would eat broken gear and debt service to repeat offenders

Weather would probably result in the plug getting pulled and a partial refund getting issued. But only if severe.

Very true. I already have over 40 receivers so I'm well into the commercial world.

Just a thought, I would build or customize a model "TV" stand or table for your equipment. Make a prototype and repeat it. Like power strips, screwed into the bottoms of the tables...where you can assure your equipment is keeping dry. Also wind will tip a tv over in a heartbeat. I would have bolts already pre drilled into the table where all you have to do is slip on your tv stand and wing nutted down...little things like that would help the longevity of equipment, which is obviously your largest overhead. Regardless, great idea. I would think 50-70$ would be very reasonable.

I have to say, being a tech guy myself that you may be on to something.

I think everyone in this thread has brought you some good points, especially Lettuce that gifing dude about researching products that are more weather proof. It is probably too late for this season, but I know I have seen some HD flat screens that you can point a garden hose at and not bother it one bit. For me security of your goods would be the biggest concern and having some sort of lock down for your equipment would be viable in the future if you don't already have a solution.

I would love to have some email conversations with you about this in the future. I love to throw ideas on the wall and see what sticks and I have some things I wonder if you have thought of. They might not even be feasible, but you never know.

Some day I hope to make over for a game and buy a set up from you with the tailgate food from our Dawg friend in Nashville.

We use a dish tailgater cube have a special hitch on the back of the truck that

Fits a 60 inch screen with a quiet generator. We have a extra tent that the truck can back under in case of rain like Abbie game. It takes about 10 minutes to set up. It is a great deal for $100 dollars but I would charge $200 because of all the above mentioned questions. You have to be sure someone stays with the equipment or some douche bag will be sure to steal it.

Don't listen to the tightwads. $100 / game is very reasonable because I am sure there is a lot of time and overhead involved.
Definitely sign me up if you do this.

I was researching this earlier this week. I can but a DirectV kit for $151.00, use my own receiver, generator, TV and I am in business. If you have to buy the generator then it may be worth $100/game but I would be reluctant to put a price point that high when you are competing with DIY satellite service for a fraction of the cost.

I think your price estimate is pretty low there to get setup to DIY. I'm not sure what kit you saw, but for a manually aimed HD dish your talking $150. $600 for an auto aimer. $100 for an HD receiver. $200 for a 32" TV. $900 for a generator. Another $50 worth of cables and connectors. And a minimum 1 yr contract with a satellite service provider at $40/month. Then the hassle of lugging all that to your spot, finding a spot where your dish can get signal, hooking it all up and having to do something with it while your in the game.

DIY is definitely an option. A good one for some. But our mission as a company is to take the hassle out of tailgating, I think this could really help do that for a large base of people.

Some kind of wheeled box that would double as storage between games and a table/ stand during use. Paint it bright pink so it would be obvious if somebody was trying to sneak one off. Everything self contained would be nice, roll it off a trailer, to a tent, one plug and one cable, you are ready to go.

Heck, I'd just like to have a satellite out there pointed and ready. That is the biggest pain for me. The tent, tv, and power set up is easy, and I've got all of that. What I don't like is having a direct tv subscription just for tailgating and having to point it every week.

If you guys could just take a dish out there, point it and test it with your tv, take your tv and move on, that would be awesome.
