Shelby guess definitely isn’t very wild. If Highland Tech won that game, the internet would break from the Crest, KM, and Burns guys trying to get their comment in first on the Cleveland Cty thread.

Hendo will have too much horsepower for North too contain. Hendo looked very solid when had them in 7 on7 and just can’t see North having the personnel to keep up.

Walkertown and West are a toss up for me but all the others I agree with.

Unless Robbinsville keeps the ball out of Heritage’s hand with long drives that end in points, I think that one will be pretty lopsided.

NAF1, I definitely hope Lincolnton wins but by no more than 20 points. The reason is because they get mad too easy.
Lincolnton hasn’t played Cherryville in a longtime, but prior to that it was a yearly matchup.

Some of them got really mad over a game in the early 1990’s, and their newspaper did a write up on whether Lincolnton would run the score up, calling out the coach and reminding him of his days playing in the outfield for Cherryville’s American Legion baseball team.

It’s a funny thing, if Shelby beats them badly, they don’t say much. Suppose it’s because they expect Shelby to win big, but not so much us…Maybe it’s because we’re only 10 minutes down the road from them.

Burns scored 49 in the 1st quarter against Cherryville last year (school record for a quarter), 63 in the 1st half (school record for a half) and ended up winning 75-0 (2 points shy of a school record for most points in a game) 😂. Lincolnton will win by more than 20

And by the way, I'm really looking forward to Lincolnton coming to Burns next Friday. That should be a really good one!

I was looking forward to it myself, until The Bulldogs nearly knocked off Kings Mountain, last week. :)
I’ve been looking forward to Lincolnton coming since the conference was released. I’ll take adding Lincolnton and West Lincoln over TJ any day. Should be a good game! Lincolnton will destroy Cherryville. Just wait and see. Cherryville wanted nothing to do with this conference and you will see why.

I have stated it before but Erwin is skilled but a very physically small team. Their qb is good but he’s going to have get the ball out quick because I think Brevard’s d-line/ backers will impose their will most of the night. Erwin has had a tough schedule but I think their size is going to be a problem in more games than not especially this Friday. Brevard SHOULD physically dominate them and will also have enough racehorses to keep most big plays from developing.

There is a YouTube video where Lincolnton routed Cherryville 62-0 back in 1994. Lincolnton I bet you remember that game well.
VV86, I’m thinking that one was played here. The one that really made them furious was a game a couple of years before that, at Cherryville.:

Lincolnton was up maybe four scores, Cherryville has L pinned down near their own goal line. If I’m thinking right, L wants to get out of the hole to have enough room to be able to punt it away…The L quarterback tosses a short screen over the line, but since C decided to bring the blitz. The L receiver was not being covered, and went something like 90 yards for a score. That’s when they got mad, really mad.

After that, the Lincolnton receiver told me how angry they were thinking they ran the score up on them. He said he never knew that SonOfA had so many suffixes.

‘I could never imagine this same coach running the score up on anyone…Our poster LHSfaninVa played for him. Very classy teams and very deliberate.

To highlight key blowout games between Lincolnton and Cherryville high school football in the 1980s and 1990s, the following notable matchups:
  • 1980: Lincolnton defeated Cherryville 42-0, showcasing a dominant performance.
  • 1983: Lincolnton won decisively with a score of 35-7, solidifying their rivalry.
  • 1985: A significant blowout where Lincolnton triumphed 38-6, emphasizing their strength.
  • 1987: Lincolnton continued their streak with a 40-8 victory over Cherryville.
  • 1990: Cherryville faced a tough loss, with Lincolnton winning 45-12 in a lopsided game.
  • 1993: Lincolnton secured a commanding 50-0 win, marking one of the largest margins in the rivalry.
  • 1995: Cherryville struggled again, with Lincolnton winning 36-0, maintaining their dominance.
  • 1997: Lincolnton achieved a 41-14 victory, further establishing their superiority in the matchup.
  • 1999: In a high-scoring affair, Lincolnton won 48-20, capping off a strong decade against Cherryville.

Was it likely around 1993—or perhaps five or six years earlier—when Heath Bray played for his father at Cherryville High School? While I didn’t think much of those Ironmen teams at the time, I found it impressive that a local athlete went on to play for the Arizona Wildcats. That’s quite a journey from Cherryville and Lincolnton.

During those years, Lincolnton’s punter also served as the quarterback. Brian Moody was known for his punting ability, as was Charles Brigg. Coach Cloninger oversaw special teams, and while I can't confirm he gave them the green light, it seemed our quarterbacks had the discretion to adjust if they saw an opportunity—such as audibling out of a punt in response to a blitz.

I believe there was an incident at the end of a game involving a physical altercation (I wasn’t present), after which either Coach Smith or Coach Bray stated their team would no longer play the other school.

I reference the period before 1993 because I remember Lincolnton’s non-conference schedule including South Point, West Lincoln, Kings Mountain, North Gaston, and Shelby. I am going to guess South Point got added and Cherryville dropped.

Sadly, while preparing this post, I came across an article noting that Heath Bray passed away last year from a heart attack in Phoenix, Arizona. He is survived by his wife and four children.

Thanks TFNL. I am surprised that they played Cherryville in 1990. AI?

My friend, don’t know if the receiver would want me to put his name on here. Initials are MM. got a feeling you’d know him…H. Bray was a competitor. Sorry to hear of his passing.

I remembered watching Anwar Wyatt playing for Lincolnton back in ‘93-‘94 season. He was good. I pulled up on line and reading about Lincolnton beating South Point 41-13 back in ‘94. The article had a good write up.

VV86, in 1993 we lost to South Point in a close non-conference game but went on to win the unified 2A title against Burlington Cummings… In 1994 we beat South Point but lost the unified title game to Wallace-Rose Hill.

In 2007 we lost to Shelby, but went on to win the title against South Columbus…In 2011 We beat Shelby, but lost in the title game to Tarboro.

I think the point I’m trying to make is if we ever have a team that might be a title contender maybe it’s best if we lose our non conference and non-divisional games to avoid bad luck. We’re just peculiar that way, I guess. :)

One last addendum, Lincolnton playing Cherryville in 1990 then the quarterback and punter would have been Moody. MM would have been one of the starting TEs and a reliable target for Moody replacing Happy Hush who would have graduated that prior season. I would not have been at that game.

I did wonder if you might have been playing at that time.Heard there was a write-up about it in the Cherryville Eagle (Their newspaper-It’s now a section in the Lincolnton paper). Sure enough, it was there. Mainly, they talked about the coach.
Can’t even imagine Coach Smith even thinking about purposely bumping the score on any team, which we know he wouldn’t.

There was another one at West Lincoln that fired-up some WL fans, this would have been around 1992. I saw that one. Again, it’s late in the game. Lincolnton is out front by around 4 scores. L has the ball around the WL 35. Lincolnton has its substitutes playing but they’re moving the ball.

On 4th and short the coach attempts a field goal, which I believe the coach thought had about a fifty-fifty chance of being good sine it was from fifty yards out. I think he knew that if L would have ran a play on 4th and short they would have made it, so he went for the long field.

Most of the L fans thought it was just something to keep from scoring another touchdown…I remember the ball going through the uprights, and the WL people getting mad. The Lincolnton kicker was M.Arias.

My boss at the time was from WL, and remember him, on the following Monday, yelling about L running the score up on WL. I spent the day trying to dodge him…His secretary was a cheerleader for L, back in the old days, and she would stand up to him, but I spent the day trying to dodge him.

And it wasn't like Burns was trying to run up the score... I mean, hand the ball off and sent the back straight into the line.... the fact Cherryville couldn't tackle a wet paper bag had nothing to do with it.
