Says that a major newspaper reporter told him this tonight that MSU will offer Mullen 3.5 million. Take it FWIW since we're posting rumors.

That would make him one of the top paid coaches in college but I doubt it is that high. I was thinking 100k higher than whatever Nutt is making. 2.7/2.8 Regardless he deserves to be paid more than Nutt.

saying we need to take care of the assistants (particularly Diaz and Balis), too. They have been a huge part of this years success.

If Mullen and Meyer are still pretty tight and the stress of the job at Florida nearly killed Meyer then I am not convinced that Mullen would want to jump into that pressure cooker when he could stay at State, get a big fat raise, and not have For Sale signs in his yard ifdoes not win 10games per year. Could just be my inner homer talking though.

I just want them to get the money to improve Davis Wade Stadium. That will go a long ways in keeping coaches and attracting players.

He has done this without the talent and depth of most of the SEC and is starting to kick arse. He is locking down Mississippi in recruiting and the schedule is very favorable for an even better year next season. I'm woolier than ever if he returns

I saw 2.2 to 2.5 coming. I mean we paid Sly 1.7. We could very very easily afford 2.2-2.5.

Then Stricklin said that he would not allow money to be the reason Mullen ever left. So hell maybe we can afford big boy money. Wouldn't surprise me. And we have ESPN to thank. The smaller SEC schools got the biggest boost from ESPN money. While the ESPN money is equally split amongst SEC schools, that money was a 30% budget increase for us. It was a much more modest increase %-wise for the big schools who with many more sports to support - and they probably absorbed the ESPN money pretty quickly.

2nd year coach with LITTLE experience would not make that much money. I heard from a reliable source state doesn't even have enough money to offer him
2.5 million.

Posted on BDJ earlier that Mullen has a "special" provision in his new contract and that's what the holdup has been about. Said it's something personal that very few schools would do and it may keep him in Vegas for a long time. And no, he didn't go into detail and I have no idea if he knows what the hell he's talking about.

Then why would our AD say he would never lose Mullen over money?

I agree we don't have as much money as some but do the math. Having the right coach at MSU is worth a LOT of money. 10,000 season tickets are worth almost $5 million, not even counting concessions, bowl revenue, extra donations, etc. I am a business man and understand not wasting your money. However, if it took $3.5M to keep Mullen, I would find it if I was in charge. Stricklin said he would do what he had to. I believe him.

MSU will never be dominant in football, we could win 6-7 games every year and win 9-10 in a great year. Is Mullen worth that? Maybe, but he's gone to UF if they offer.

To MSU. A large chunk went to the athletic Dept. We have some money, and not to mention the tv contracts are huge too.

you will be shocked at what kind of money can be quickly raised. It is just a matter of if we want to do it. It would not take many phone calls, and our AD knows the phone numbers to dial. The university itself can only pay a base of 250K; that is only the tip of the iceberg. The rest is private funds. The money can be there.

60 to A.D. 60 to the rest of the school. It can't be touched easily though but it can be handed out in smallammounts.

A cheating QB away from competing for the title. I believe that theory is losing its validity.

I do realize that we also were a few close wins from a 6-6 season. But my point stands.

Either way, 3.5 mil should be enough to develop us into a more dominant team. See pal, that's how it gets done. The big money schools get the best returns. That's how it works.

Your source is defintitely NOT relaible. There are sources of income that can handle 3.5 million, year in and year out.

I do realize that we also were a few close wins from a 6-6 season.

We could have easily beaten them. UK could have easily beaten them. S. Car. could have easily beaten them (the first time). Clempson could have beaten them. Bama should have beaten them. Ok, not 6-6, but they could have easily been between 7-5 and where they are now. Even with their QB, they still had to have some luck and some good bounces to be undefeated. This has nothing to do with Mullen, just saying.

About Mullen, when I first read about Meyer leaving, I got a huge knot in my gut. I just knew Mullen was gone. The more I have thought about it though, the more I feel like Mullen stays. Just a hunch.

I'm not your pal....and what I said isn't theory....it's reality. Pay the guy 8 million a year....that won't make us win anymore, but we can be competitive on a regular basis. Hell, 7-5 is not difficult to obtain if we have 4 easy non-conf. games every year.

Didn't we just build one of the most massive HD Screens in the world, for like 25 million?

Yes, I think Mississippi State can pay him 3.5 Mil a year, that billion plus dollars of ESPN money goes along way, plus I am sure the Bulldog Club is doing its part, imagine how much more donations we have gotten than in the Croom era...

We are going to get more and more money.

To have success, you have to pay for it. But by paying for it, you get more money in return.

We're doing what we should have done years ago.

as someone earlier pointed out, the most MSU can pay a coach is 250k. The rest has to come from private donations like from the Bulldog Club.

So all the talk in this thread of the ESPN money or gifts likeSeal's giftto MSU are off the table.

Now I'm not saying the money can't be raised privately. Just wanted to make clear that the money from those other sources are not available for salaries. Heck even the extra revenue from season ticket sales are not available for salaries other than what is allowed under state law (250k).

The rest has to come from private donations. However, private donations can be used for anything. Therefore, the ESPN and Seal money free up more of the private donation money. Correct? I'm actually asking.

While those monies can not be used directly for salaries, they can certainly free up much more private money that used to go to things such as capital improvements.
