I'm likely to be in the market soon for a new smartphone. HTC Hero with Android 2.1 vs iPhone 4 vs Blackberry Torch. Discuss. To make it sports related, a better phone means a better ability to follow the Dawgs.

you would think this would be pretty cut and dry as far as facts, but it looked more like a political thread to me.

To try and add some thing...I use an iphone 3 and love it.

If you go the HTC route, get the Desire. The Hero is very sluggish. I've been satisfied with Cell South's unlimited talk/text/web plan. I would recommend it.

I actually like that it is smaller than the other smart phones. I don't wish the screen was bigger. Its good enough.

The only thing I'd change would be the processor speed. Its a little sluggish. I assume the Desire has a faster processor.

I have an iPhone 4 and love it. It does everything I want it to do very well.<div>
</div><div>For the average user, I think the "differences" between these phones are minimal and won't really come into play in day-to-day use. There are iPhone vs. Android vs. Blackberry battles all over the internet and I don't think it makes much difference at the end of the day.</div><div>
</div><div>Just get the phone and the plan you like and be happy with it.</div><div>

And it sucked badly. And I mean badly.

There's no reason to give Microsoft another chance when there are so many proven outstanding choices available.

And she loved it, until I got the Evo. The Evo is outstanding. After me having the Evo for a week with the Froyo update, the wife upgraded hers as well. The Hero is ok, but it's already outdated.

I've got the Motorola Milestone with android 2.0 or whatever. It is awesome. It does everything the iPhone 4 does, but I never drop calls. I've never had any issues with it, and I'm pretty hard on a phone. I switched from blackberry, and I like everything about the Milestone better, other than the slider keypad that I don't use.

I haven't tried the new Samsung, but I heard it was going to be strong as well. Problem is Cellular South gets their phones later than everybody else.

I had an Iphone 3G and the 4.0 software update slowed my phone down to a snails pace. The 4.1 update helped, but it was never the same. My Desire runs Android 2.1 and can multi task without any slowing down. I've heard good things about the Galaxy. I'm not too big on the Milestone (listed below). Just walk into a Cell South store and play with one for yourself.

The Samsung Galazy S (I think CS's version will be called the Showcase) is a better phone than the desire. They both have 1GHz processors but the Samsung has much better battery life and larger memory for apps. It also uses much less MB when sitting idle (pinging the tower and such) so it can use around 300 to 400 less MB a month.

If you are looking at a hero or milestone, wait a month and go with the samsung phone. I know the reason CS decided to put the phone out later was because they are fixing bugs and other issues that verizon and sprint pushed out with the phone (such as the gps feature taking up to 5 minutes to find where you are and losing its position randomly.)

I played with the samsung phone the other day and its honestly an iphone clone so you would probably be best to wait until November when they come out.

I'm with Cell South and am waiting on the Samsung to hit the market to make a decision. I'm rocking an old Blackberry Curve with a worn out trackball at the moment. I've watched several demos on youtube pitting these two phones against one another. Seems like the general consensus is that the Samsung has a superior screen/display and is modeled after the iPhone but that the HTC makes a better product, releases more updates, has a better camera, etc. Supposedly the upcoming Froyo update is going to help out huge with both units. I'm going to wait it out.

Broke down last saturday and upgraded to an iPhone 4. I love it. It's ridiculously fast, the whole retina is appreciated the longer you have. I would compare it to an LED tv. You don't appreciate how clear it is untill you look away.

Also I'm ready for more people to get iPhone 4's because this face time thing is going to pretty cool, especially if your like me and live away from your family.

Get an iPhone 4, you want regret it.

1st, get the Hero off your brain, the phone is not good compared to what is available now.

The blackberry torch has had mixed reviews. If your company used the BES for mail then a Blackberry might still be in the discussion but Blackberry is lightyears behind on "smartphone" technology. The only thing they have going for them is the BES.

That leaves the iPhone which is a great phone but you are stuck with ATT.

My recommendation if you want to go with CellularSouth or you want to go with Android is to wait for the Galaxy (mid November release most likely), the thing is unreal. Best processor, best screen (samsung makes the best screens hands down), super fast, and it will have the Samsung Media Hub where you can rent or buy movies, music, and more (and stream them to your TV if you get the right setup).

If you like ATT then you can't go wrong with the iPhone.

I personally like Android because I don't like Apple's model of controlling everything about their software and I hate exclusive agreements.

Just asking what to get is going to turn into a religious discussion. What you need to start out with is WHAT you want to do with the phone!

For example, I have an iPhone 3G. I hate AT&T with the passion of a burning sun and the millisecond I can transfer away from those idiotic f!!kups I will. But, I use iTunes all day, every day. I plug my phone in on the way to work and listen to podcasts. At work I listen to music. When I workout I listen to audio books. So, it's the phone for me. I won't switch from the iPhone because iTunes is my "killer app".

So what do you really need a smart phone for? If it's to keep track of MSU sports then I would say do something other than an AT&T phone because their network sucks balls and if more than 15 people are in one place or the wind blows the wrong direction you aren't going to be able to check anything.

...BECAUSE of the iPhone?<div>
</div><div>I've wondered if their network gets bad reviews because all of the iPhone accessing it so often and it puts such a weight on it.</div><div>
</div><div>So if Verizon gets the iPhone like some people are saying, will their network feel some of the weight when lots of people finally get what they've been wanting?</div>

our company currently has the Hero with Cellular South, which we like, but since the 2.1 OS upgrade, seems a lot slower. The Rep said the Hero was not really fast enough processor wise for 2.1. We did a test of internet speeds with the Desire and the Hero and the Desire loaded the same web page about 8 second before the Hero.

I also hear good things about the Motorola Droid, but I don't know if Cellular South has that one, I don't think so.

Yes. But, it's not the iPhone's fault that AT&T has lied about the problems and refused to fix them. While I think Verizon will see issues in some areas they have been improving their network a lot of the past few years and are in a much better position to handle the strain. Plus, they are only going to get about half the iPhone owners so it's not like everyone is switching over. Those were really two separate thoughts in my head, AT&T's network sucks, which is does. And I hate those f!!kers, because they are a ****** company that doesn't treat their customers well. If you like AT&T then you have never really dealt with AT&T.

I will second that sentiment. The Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate is what I got when I left AT&T and the iPhone for Verizon. It has the most amazing screen, hardware, etc. It does everything really well and looks sharp doing it. Plus, it blows away other smartphones with regard to speed. I would definitely recommend it, and have to everyone that has asked. WAIT until cellular south gets it. I wish I would have know they were when I got mine.

<p style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt" class="MsoNormal"><font face="Calibri">1. switch to Verizon. Their network is the strongest for smartphones. At&t's network isslaw. All they have going for them is the Iphone 4 which is rumored to be coming to verizon<span style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: yellow" wordlookup="verizon"><a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38635041/ns/technology_and_science-wireless/">[/url]</span> early next year.

2.Phones i am debating: Droid 2, HTC Incredible, Droid X. That is all. Little girls use HTC heros.

3. These phones have the NFL network APP that live-streams the nfl network at all times. This is free. These phones can also tether to a laptop or cpu for free internet. Well the app costs money.

4.Droid 2 is compatable with the new Droid OS that will be coming out soon. The incredible is an HTC phone that has more RAM than my laptop. The Droid X is a Motorola phone which is a brand that i trust more. Plus it has a bigger screen and is more compatible to the EVO (without the quote-unquote4G). </font></p>
I went in looking at the Droid X and came out with a Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate. If you care about screen quality, speed, usability, and overaesthetics...you will too!

The Milestone is the Droid. Verizon now has the Droid X which is the newer model. CS doesn't have that.

But I didn't mean AT&T sucks for only iPhoners. Just that is it possible that so many iPhones are on the network now and clogging it up with mounds and mounds of data transmission. Therefore even a guy w/ a Razr from 2005 still has issues because the whole thing moves likemolasses.

I'll be really interested to see how many they sell and how quickly. They'll have to be CDMA phones, right?<div>
</div><div>And AT&T has some pretty serious fees if you break their smart phone contract. So a lot of people, even if they did want to switch, don't want to drop that extra coin just for service with Verizon.</div><div>
</div><div>But there are probably plenty of people not yet on board w/ the iPhone that are just waiting for a different carrier. But the Droid has narrowed the gap I think. But I think the Droid is going to make the Blackberry market continue to shrink. Because both Droid and iPhone > BB.</div>

If you can't, get an iPhone 4. Android is awful, from my experience, anyway. Have no idea about the windows 7?

I just LOVE my iPhone 3G and am VERY jealous of the iPhone 4 people.

All cell phone companies have to pro rate now. So if you leave AT&T they can only charge you a pro-rated fee. So if you just signed a contract you are hosed, but if you are a ways into it you can leave without much problem.

And you are right about the phones. There will be a separate version of the iPhone4 for Verizon but there have been rumors for a while now that Verizon and Apple had been working with chip developers to get it done.

little gal I spoke to indicated that their version of the cool Samsung phone was looking to be a February 2011 release, but also said that info can change weekly, so call back for release updates.

I am also in the smart phone market w/ Cellular South, & until this thread & researching the Samsung phone, was going to get the HTC Desire by the end of the month. I think I am going to wait for the Samsung version.

The only think I liked about the Hero was the sprint TV. The phone was laggy as hell. Dialed people on accident all the time, screen response was slow, etc... I absolutely hated it.
I said that I would never get an IPhone but I did because everyone told me it was way better. I got the IPhone4 for the whole family and it turns out, they were right all along. I dont know why I was against it all these years.

The FaceTime is really cool. We use it all the time because I travel.

The Apple 4.0 software absolutely ruined my iPhone 3G as well. Is there a way to reload the older software version on the phone? Yes, 4.1 helped, some. It still doesn't work as well as it used to though. I am looking forward to Feb when I can upgrade to the latest iPhone.
