It's always interesting to see what OOC teams think of our campus, stadium, etc. It's a good way to kill time, really. Georgia Tech fans had some interesting observations, most of which I could agree with, although the best one was the comparison between fans. One of the first posters described it as a "contest between sophisticated urbanites" (GT fans) "and country-fried rubes" (State fans). I found that funny, considering none of the GT fans I saw seemed any more 'sophisticated' than your average State fan.

Other notable thoughts throughout the thread (if you don't want to waste as much time as I did reading):
-Most think our cowbells are neat/a little annoying/decently loud
-All think our scoreboard is incredible, which it is, and "puts their new one to shame"
-One guy said it was the nicest campus he had ever seen, and some agreed that it was beautiful, but "in the boonies"
-Some commented on the female talent, but that's not hard coming from GT fans
-Most liked our tailgating
-Most thought the songs coming from our speakers was annoying and too often, and said they never once heard our band or even knew if we had a fight song
-And more than anything, they argued about a group of drunk GT students who made "were an embarrassment to this institution" because apparently they were heckling State fans throughout the game

I do recall one of the GT fans behind me saying "There's some good lookin' girls around here."

Figured I'd throw that in there.

to the LSU fans that sat around me last week. I swear, a few of them were right out of Deliverance. When your 12 year old son makes a comment about it, you know its valid.

they need more low brass- tubas, baritones, etc. That would help the sound at least a little bit.

But yeah, they need to play louder.

When our band played "hey go state" before the game I was psyched as hell because I've been wanting them to do that in football for years. The problem was that I couldn't hear anything from the band, I just could see they were playing. I know some of this is due to acoustics but it's the same way when they are in the endzone. Auburn's band was waaaaaay louder and obviously so was JSU's. I don't know if we need a new director or just more of a certain instrument but I can barely hear that band.

was about him saying that state fans were country bumpkins. Can someone please show me where these bumpkins tailgate? Because I've been going to school here for 3 years and have yet to see a large contingent of rednecks. Granted we are an "ag" school but I think opposing teams know this and try to seek out or pretend to say they saw rednecks or a bunch of hicks just so they can say that the stereotype is true. This kind of gets annoying after awhile, and I'm sure a school like Auburn feels the same way.

on that to. I think the newest thing they play is Spiderwebs by No Doubt. And Gwen Stephani isn't even with them anymore.

almost every person I know that's an engineer is pretty cool. But when you go to GT, it's just like Vandy with an enormous engineering school. All you hear about is "well, coming out of school, I made 325,000.00".

It's no different than when you hear some stripper talking about how she strips because she makes 2,000.00 a week. You know it's possible, but you also know it's probably BS, exagerrated, or there are some kind of strings attached like they live in New York City and have to pay 4,000.00 a month rent.

The GT fans were terrible. 10x worse than the corndogs last week and the corndogs were pretty bad, as usual. And when they weren't busy heckling State fans they were stumbling up and down the stands spilling drinks on people and engaging in general ***-clownery. I never had anything against Georgia Tech, but that was before having to put up with their fans for four quarters. Thankfully the cops busted them up in the 4th quarter and hauled several of them away. There were a couple of entire sections cheering as they were dragged away (most had long since lost the ability to walk or stand).

Glad to know that some of the GT students were embarrassed by them, because they truly were an embrassment to their school. And having put up with corndogs and Bammers for decades, I generally have a pretty high threshold for asshat fans.

I couldn't care less what Tech fans think. My hate for them is strong and I hope we never play again.

since I know you're a reliable source. #1, do you think the decision to put the band in the north end zone has made a big difference as far as in-game band performance? #2, and I'm glad you mentioned "Spiderwebs," because that song is probably close to its 15th birthday, and we still play it as if it were as recent as Hollaback Girl. If it were up to you, what recent pop songs would you try to incorporate into the band's repertoire, and above all, what can we do to make the FMB not be a laughingstock within our own fanbase? I've never thought they were that bad, but I don't have a lot of experience with other college marching bands.

Our band seems lazy, other bands are playing every chance they get and it seems that we just sit there. Then it's kind of an "oh **** we need to play now thing". I don't care what they play just play thats what your there for.

I thought the same thing, they had 100 less members in the band and were EASILY twice as loud, probably louder.

#1- No.

#2- Unless things have changed, people would be surprised by the plethora of music that we had. It was well over 100 songs, and many we never even touched. As far as the stands, I've always have been an advocate of what LSU does- they have a first down song, a second down song, and etc. And then they have a first and second down song and etc. for the defense as well. Then the fight song for a TD. This does a couple of things- #1 the band won't have to sight read some song that they've only played 1-2 times, #2 They won't have to find the damn song in the folder. (Watch the band next time and see how many people are still looking for their music if you sit near them. If the FMB does what LSU does, everyone will know what to play simply by knowing what down it is. They could still have signs for those that don't understand football, or forget the down just to be safe. It would still be more effective.

Explaination- when I say first down song, second down song, etc., I'm basically talking about versions of Hail State for the most part. Leave the modern songs like Hey Sloopy (sarcasm) to the Scoreboard DJ. Let the band keep playing the Hey Song. And part of the problem is communication between the scoreboard people and the band- which results in "Why is the band not doing anything?"

I would also take out some of the pre-game show- like the part where the band plays the stand tune to the student side.

As far as the band being a laughingstock, I think a lot of that comes from fan attitude more than anything. I'm not calling anyone out in particular, but I've never seen a group of fans in the SEC that supports the band so little. Some of that is on the band to- they need to do more things to reach out to fans to get the money and support that they need. Some of the attitude is- well, the football team sucks, the cheerleaders suck, and the band sucks. Look at the Sonic Boom- a lot of people think that they are awesome just because their fans hype them up so much. And no, I'm not saying that we should do that, but some of the criticism towards the FMB is unwarranted. And some of it is warranted to, though. I think it would be really nice if our fans that aren't in the bathroom or at the concession stand would at least clap for the band during the halftime show- if for no other reason than they are associated with MSU. You may not be able to donate 5 million dollars to the band, but everyone could at the very least clap or ring a cowbell for them to at least acknowledge that the work that they put into the show is appreciated.

(both were dancing and jumping around on the sidelines before kickoff).

Hahahaha! Who else saw that?

When we were starting the DPR, a group of GT players started dancing and carrying on along their sideline. I turned to my wife and said "We are about to have a dance off." I thought it was a pretty damn funny sight.

Yes, good question... who is that in your avatar? She's so damn hot, but whatever she's doing confuses the hell out of me. Enlighten us.

And I also did see the "dance off" before the game. It seems whenever we play "I put on for my city" the other team takes that as their chance to 'put on for their city' by dancing like they're at Level III.

Why dont we just scrap the cheesy pop songs altogether and come up with something completely origional and all our own? Seriously, can it be that hard? Our band lends absolutly no game day atmosphere at all. While I am at it, why do we not as a crowd all yell H-E-L-L during the fight song? It is distinctly unique and would sound pretty cool. Enough already of the "Hold on wait a minute got to put some dog in it". That is terrible and is a running joke. Just my thoughts, i will now go back into hiding.
