USM has fans?

I would think that an arctic explorer, stuck 50 miles from the north pole in the dead of winter, no communication or way to get out of his tent until spring, would be as isolated as your typical USM fan at a home game.

I said this yesterday, but it kind of got lost in the shuffle, but it is likely they start 0-6. At best, I think they are 1-5.

They've got @Western Kentucky, Louisville, Boise, and @UCF as their next 4 games. Then, Marshall (who beat their best team ever last year)... So, I don't think Ellis is going to last too long there.

I didn't realize their schedule was like that... they could very well not be bowl eligible. I typical cheer for them since they're my home town, but they have so many dumbass fans that it makes it kind of hard to some times.

I'm the same. I graduated from there, and I have many friends there. So, I'm certainly happy when they win, but I love to see the implosion among idiotic fans when they don't do well. You know, the fans that say things like "$EC Welfare Check$" and so on...

Definitely. It's so stupid... But I must admit that I'm getting a slight kick out of it. Also, with their realization that the Sun Belt may be a better conference than C-USA now.

I went yesterday to that game and Alford laid a tremendous turd yesterday. He couldn't hit the broad side of a barn when he passed and made a fair amount of mental mistakes as well. They should have given the guy that started against Nebraska a few series in the 2nd quarter.

They've got some issues as a team and i don't think the final record is going to be pretty. Personally I never though Ellis was a good fit, but then take some time and go look at who he recruited for his staff. It's like he learned nothing from Croom - he hired a few buddies and it's not going well early.

This is an example

of fans that don't understand how big of a jump it is between high school football and college football. And then you throw pro baseball on top of all of it.

Alford couldn't beat Madison Central throwing the ball last year. Much less anyone in college. Ideally, they would redshirt him- but I think with his baseball career, they feel that they can't afford to do it.

I'm not sure why they are surprised.

It has long been said that Anthony Alford is a good athlete, but doesn't throw the ball well. He couldn't throw well in high school. He's a local kid. How could they not know that?

EJ does seems to have some Croom traits also. Hiring buddies, stubbornness and misplacing blame. Things are looking pretty shaky for him right now.

They are on pace to miss their first bowl in 11 years to go with their first losing season in 19 years. Yes, I'd say meltdown = eminent!

WTF did they expect from Alford? He's a true freshman who spent most of the summer playing baseball. He wasn't a good passer in high school. Very unfair to him for Johnson to start him this weekend. And a stupid decision by Johnson. He should be a role player for them all this season and probably next season too. I've said from the beginning that I'm glad he didn't sign with us because giving him the proper time to develop just isn't possible because of his baseball career. If he only played football, he could have been a good player if he'd been given a redshirt this year, a little playing time next year, then compete for a starting spot in year 3. As it is, you have to wonder if he'll even make it to year 3 because of baseball. My guess is he winds up not reaching his potential in either sport because he's trying to do both instead of concentrating on one.

If he had gone to MSU

I think we would have made him a running back.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's what ultimately happens to him at USM should he continue to play football.

Probably what will happen is they will bench him at some point or try to make him switch, and he'll get upset and just play baseball. It already sounds like he didn't appreciate being booed by their fans.

I'm not sure if that would have been an option. I don't think he would even try to play college football at any other position besides QB. I do agree that he'll probably give up football either after this season or next because of the unreasonable expectations of USM fans and pressure from his MLB club. I know they said he could play both, but for the money they're paying him, you've got to think they're going to start giving him some pressure to play baseball full time.

I think that's part of the reason we didn't get him

He definitely wants to be a QB. Right now, he is basically holding USM hostage- play me now, play me at QB or I'm going to Toronto. The fact that he is a local kid has put even more pressure on USM to get the guy in the first place and it's put pressure on him to perform right away.

I'm glad we didn't get him.

Looks like Gene is posting there as the poster known as Panther BBall:
"I feel like there should be some kind of board rule about bashing any USM athlete"

I've talked to several southern fans that

thought when they got Alford, he was the second coming of RGIII or Michael Vick. I kept telling them that he would likely end up at WR, especially considering the fact that he is playing professional baseball much of the time.

I was at the game. USM should have redshirted Alford like MSU did with Russell and Prescott especially since Alford's a true freshman who also plays pro baseball. He's got talent but doesn't have near enough practice time to be a major contributor early this season.
