Wasn't able to go to the game but listened on the radio and have read all the comments here. Today I saw a friend who is a long time Spartan fan and who has a good deal of experience in officiating. He spent most the game watching with a long time and well respected football official in Roanoke, a gentleman who has called many big games. His take was that there were a number bad calls/no calls but they went both ways and he couldn't say that any call affected the outcome of the game. From what I heard, the crew assigned to that game wasn't the best in the association. My only complaint is that given the implications of the game with two undefeated teams, the Commissioner should have assigned one of his best crews to that game. Regardles calls get missed at every level and that will continue for as long as the games exist. Even though I saw none of them, realistically unless its a call or no call that results in a team scoring points or getting points taken off the board, how could you ever say that a call affects the outcome of the game. Apparently the offsides call that was missed was blatant. So instead of losing two yards Giles gets the 5 yd penalty. Maybe they would have run a different play on the next down and fumbled or threw a pick 6. There's no way to know. If a penalty is called, its usually pretty unlikely that the next play would be the same as what was ultimately run. When Giles got the ball back after the missed 2 point try with about 4 minutes left as I recall, I thought they could win with a couple of first downs. They didn't get them and Glenvar got the ball back and got their field goal. Questionabe call on that drive. But if they don't get that call maybe the next play is a TD pass. No way to tell. As I see it Giles controlled their destiny at the end and couldn't take advantage. Give the Glenvar D credit for that too. Until we learn to throw some 10-15 yard passes, good defenses that load the box are going to give us trouble. We were banged up from a hard hitting game Monday night and Glenvar was well rested. At this level most teams don't have a lot of extra players with the same talent level so being lucky enough to avoid injury is a big part of winning a championship and you have little control over that. But as my friend said, the better team on the field won Saturday night. Props to them. Maybe we get to see them again or maybe both of us lose to someone else before then. Either way enjoy watching your teams play. The season goes by too fast!
