I’m pretty positive seeing that I am TJ’s coach that the homeowners association won’t allow lights considering someone offered to purchase lights when Hornik was the coach but hey I guess I don’t know anything
Ya' know what... after I made that comment, I thought about it and looked at Google Maps and realized that the houses do run up for several blocks and are very close to the field, on both sides and could see your point. When I am wrong, I do admit it! I was wrong. Sorry, didn't mean to step on your toes!

I remember a few years ago, when Lake Taylor was king of the mountain, the home side crowd at LT was always small. Devils explained it well with a good explanation about the inner city demographics, and transportation issues.

This was a big culture shock for a fan who lives in a place where HS football is a big deal. I remember watching WAVY highlights online once years back when like OS was the big muckity muck and seeing all these 757 schools, the place that just breeds NFL players, and there'd be 100-200 fans in the seats and it's just different in inner city most of the time. You can go watch major Florida programs, like nationally top 50 programs, and the stands are just barren as well. It doesn't make sense when you're on the outside looking in, it's definitely a thing you need to be educated on to understand.

It's not fading so much in Henrico, Hanover and Chesterfield Counties! The Richmond City Schools don't have lights at the football fields!
  • Armstrong and Huguenot have lights
  • This year Jayem plays at Huguenot because of renovations at their field.
  • Wythe prefers to play in the county to get that county money.
  • TJHS plays on Saturdays during the day

They usually play their games in the afternoon before dark.... Most of the fans, parents, etc., probably have to work and can't make the early kick time. Also, the student body at these schools, most likely aren't interested in going to the games
just as interested as others most the kids at the other games are there for the socialization
When they play at a County School, I get the feeling that the majority of them don't want to come out to see that school's team get beaten badly!
James River had the same problem years ago with their baseball team. They got a state quarters win due to a storm coming through, stopping the game after 5 innings, because no lights allowed,by the HOA a good distance away, that didn’t want ANY LIGHTS for night games.

One of the HSHS assistants used to be an assistant at TJ,and said the same as you’re saying. They DO NOT WANT lights there!
same with the HOA near Jayem

How do they allow Softball at that complex behind JM/Henderson Middle, but not allow lights for football?! My friend used to umpire softball there twice a week during the week with ASA.

Handley has no lights, and I'm told it's because the neighborhood doesn't want them. I will say this, I may not really agree, but I do agree that it's the areas decision to make. They don't need someone that's not vested in the neighborhood to make the decision.

BTW, if you have never been to a game at Handley, put it on your bucket list. It's an amazing venue.

You have to take the video from the news with a grain of salt. City Stadium seats 9,000-10,000 people so it never will look "packed" out even when it is a large crowd. The Glass-Heritage game will draw 5,000-6,000 people and it will still appear to be a low turnout just due to the design of the stadium.
I went to a Heritage game last year. I counted the fans on the Heritage side. There were about 100 fans there. Add 50 more for the band. Pitiful, This was a team good enough to win the state title in 3-A.

Exactly. Can’t beat them anymore...
I never thought I would see the day when Mighty E.C. Glass would be in the Seminole District. When I was in school at Rustburg, The E.C. Glass j/v played the Rustburg Varsity and beat them. Being a city school playing the smaller county schools and beating is not a lot to brag about.

EC Glass wasn’t the school that it was when you were younger. I’m not bragging at all. But people always have something to complain or point out about the city schools. It’s just not the same as what it was back in the 60’s and 70’s. Glass was a MUCH bigger school.

I was implying that when the football team was down all you heard about was how bad the football program was and that it was a cesspool. Rustburg was beating Glass in 3 years ago. Now Glass is Blowing them out and now have a great program, and now wanna call the fans “no shows”. What’s next?

When Rustburg is up again, and Glass is down what are you gonna day then? Each program has their up and down years no matter the size of the school.

I was very surprised to see how few Amherst had in attendance at the JF game this week.
Probably more than Glass will have with a winning record. Had to have kids from JF escorted back to your side because of their behavior and taunting to the players and coaches.

Big games still draw big crowds. EV/Louisa 2018, Manchester/Highland Springs 2019, Oscar Smith/Highland Springs 2019, Big games still draw big crowds....
Exactly! Not sure why a select few are surprised that it wasn't a large crowd to watch a 6-0 team play a 1-5 team. Like you said, Big games draw big crowds. Not anticipated blowouts.

There will be a big crowd next week at Colonial Forge (vs HS) and a huge crowd the following week @ Henrico (HSHSvs Varina)
Not to mention Atlee. Their fans always fill their home side. HSHS will fill the visitor side thisvweek, too!

Same thing with the Heritage game last year in the playoffs. People knew that game wasn't going to be competitive.
I remember when Heritage HS was a fairly new school and I had the privilege to see the Marching Band back in their hay day! I saw them at the Hermitage Band Classic and that band was one of the best I've ever seen! They were huge (about 250 strong) and they were FANTASTIC! Just blown away by it, I remember well...
It is sad to hear that not only the fan base has dwindled, but that band program has gone bye bye... That is very sad. In case you guys don't know, I was not a football player or coach at HSHS, I was a 4 year letter man in band.... currently a professional musician and help in tutoring with HSHS's band. Not to mention their #1 fan!!

Yeah the bands are smaller in Lynchburg as well. I was a member of the Glass band for 3 years. Still a good program, just not as many kids in band as there were when I was there.

With that game being AT HENRICO,the stands hold a bigger crowd than at Varina or Manchester. HSHS’s old stands hold more but they’re gone! I don’t remember the CForge stands being very big on the visitor’s side, but expect HSHS to more than fill that too! The HSHS/Atlee game will draw well but nothing like CF or Varina

Yes
This is how we still do it in the mean streets of Mineral.

when you are winning it happens. Even though Amherst program isn’t what it used to be, attendance at home games have been pretty good but not packed.

Glass never brought a crowd. Amherst fans/parents should be excited for a new coach and at least support him. Everyone knew that was a big game for Christmas. I don't see him sticking around long there, and I don't blame him.

Hard to believe some homeowners are so small that a half dozen Friday nights with lights to maybe 10 Pm is so devastating to them. There are homes within 30 feet of Poquosons football field and no problem putting lights up. Some bunch of neighbors.

He knows the fans support him. We had signs and banners made and gave out Santa hats to our fans in support of him. That’s one place I hate to go to. It’s awful and the fans boo your team. I had some of the kids from JF removed and made them go back to there side. Had on bad shirts and they were taunting, fans and coachesz

I miss the day when the BOMM would start out by marching almost the whole way around the track at games. They made sure everyone knew they were there. They seemed to go on forever, stretching nearly the entire length of the field. Numbers at the school are down compared to then, but I also think when Carter left Heritage and then Meredith retired at Sandusky Middle it hurt.

Yep, the Big Orange Marching Machine!! They were fantastic back in their day!!
I found this video of them in 1997.... The field show is near the end of the video.
