While Kimchee was questionable recruiting, Tunsil and Treadwell are much bigger red flags in my opinion. I can at least understand Kimchee playing with his brother.

Ole Miss, a postcard town stained to the bone by a cancerous, self-created mystique that's so vapid, so invalidated by modern culture that one extra cufflink, one extra bow tie, one extra flair on an already obscene cocktail dress would implode the whole damn Grove in a fit of pretentiousness, like a dying star with a little alligator embroidered on it.

That's .... that's just pure poetry.

Godfrey, forgot to mention your Ole Miss faithful storming the field last year

in their Egg Bowl victory, like they had won the west and a trip to Atlanta or something. An act of such desperation that Slive didn't have the heart to fine them for it.

The article was a bit disjoint, to say the least. Is it safe to assume that writing isn't Godfrey's primary job?

And someone should tell him ... and maybe I am since I think he posts here sometime ... that the size of a video board isn't measured in "cubic feet" ... "square feet" is correct. And neither ours or the Bears' board is a JumboTron ... that's a Sony trade name and neither board is a Sony.

I cringe when I read his stuff. He is always horrible with grammar, punctuation, etc. I don't know if he majored in something that required english or writing classes, but he would have been wise to mix in a class or two of writing or english.

"Jones is a home-grown Missisippian"

Terrible spelling for someone who writes an article.

I like Godfrey, and I like the article. A few issues, though...

State's video board is 30% larger than Ole Miss', not "1 cubic foot bigger" or 1 square foot bigger. That's just a lie told by OM fans.

When Mullen said "We will never lose to this team again" after the 2011 Egg Bowl, it was in the locker room away from any media, and the video was taken from a cell phone behind Mullen. Many OM fans have acted like Mullen said it at a press conference. Godfrey did not go that far--he only said something about Mullen allowing it to be videotaped, which may or may not be true.

State fans will of course object to his description of State fans, but I think what he said about OM fans was much worse.

I do take offense to Godfrey's description of the MSU campus. He's simply wrong. I wonder if he has even been to State's campus, especially when it is green. I don't even need to say "...been to State's campus RECENTLY" as many do, because it has never looked as bad as he described. However, the campus does look much better now than 10 years ago.

I'll pass along the error to the copy desk. Thanks for reading!

As as to the former, I'll correct that to reflect it being a claim of OM fans, which was the point.

Per the latter, I think you missed the point. i like State just fine...

Yeah, I hear UM people say State intentionally made their board "1 square foot bigger" all the time. I'm not sure who made that up, but it's a complete and total lie.

DWS video board- 5,217 square feet
VHS video board- 3,129 square feet

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_college_football_stadium_video_boards

I think they actually did make their baseball board larger than ours by some tiny amount. That's probably where it originally came from...

Godfrey is still using the word "upset". I'm not sure I've seen anyone else call that game an upset.

It's supposed to be a view of each team from the extreme side of the opposing team's fan base.

I just went back and reread it and I see my mistake. I should have reread it before writing my post later.

Again, I liked it. It's a fun read.

Two things I like about Godfrey: 1. He places words good and makes them fit together. I don't want to be presumptuous and say Mr. Godfrey has never strived to be the next Bob Woodward. He seems to find a niche between Marshall Ramsey and Dan Jenkins. Grammar police beware, but, I am of the Thoreau belief “When I hear the hyper*crit*i*cal quar*rel*ing about gram*mar and style, the posi*tion of the par*ti*cles, etc., etc., stretch*ing or con*tract*ing every speaker to cer*tain rules of theirs. I see that they for*get that the first req*ui*site and rule is that expres*sion shall be vital and nat*ural, as much as the voice of a brute or an inter*jec*tion: first of all, mother tongue; and last of all, arti*fi*cial or father tongue. Essen*tially your truest poetic sen*tence is as free and law*less as a lamb’s bleat.” ~ Henry David Thoreau, 2. When he does these tongue in cheek articles and you get riled up about them either way, you are not a very objective person.

there were a few cherry-picked moments in that article and a few narrowed and/or framed perspectives but what do you expect? "vapid" was a nice touch.

i thought i would stop reading after a while, but seeing the innards of a well-written bear mind is too intriguing. just the right touch of bear lean (not too reckless or obvious) and the correct mix of sullen dejection in the loss yet the apparent tentative deference...all culminating in the unwritten realization that 4 out 5 clearly casts a negative light on their self-image.

i enjoyed it and hope to read another one like it next year at about this time.

I liked it a lot. The article will come in handy since I live in Oklahoma and I frequently have to explain the unique hatred between the two schools.

Really enjoyed it. I appreciate the perspective that was portrayed by each fanbase and the tounge and cheek personas of each. Really good read and appreciate your style.

He said Jeremy liggins went to oxford high school you have to understand that is like someone saying anthony dixon went to ole miss, but that was my only issue but please please never confuse oxford(mini-ole miss) and lafayette(the agg high school basically)

Enjoyed the article but..

it never mentions the difficult season Dak had, with his Mama dying of cancer in addition to his injuries, regarding the post-game. Perhaps that played a factor in Mullen's waterworks in the interview? From the article it just seemed that DM was spluttering over the win and the Prescott return from injury, and not the arduous journey Dak had leading up to the Egg Bowl itself and his subsequent taking the game by the haunches and humping it into submission. Roll Tide or whatever, fancy pants.
