It's a deadlock guarantee that State's next hire will be a sitting head coach, probably from the G5. You can't roll the dice on a coordinator again. Four out of the last 5 hires were cooridinators. Only Joe Moorhead had experience as a head coach but that was at the FCS level. Mullen was the only one who worked out.
Did you not count Leach? He certainly worked out.

Leach certainly did work out, but that was a very rare situation where his quirks and general interest in all these far flung, disadvantaged programs and also kind of being burned out with WSU, wanting to be closer to Key West, etc. kind of worked out just right for us.

MSU typically is not ever going to be in the hunt for a sitting P4 coach unless they are already on their way out the door at their current school, kinda like Houston Nutt was at Arkansas when OM hired him. It’s just not a viable path for us.

No one has any idea how to make the right hire as far as I know. Some coaches that seem legit become failures and others who seem like a gamble end up doing well. He probably has as good a chance as anyone in the NIL era.
It’s almost as if there isn’t much difference between competent coaches and almost as if winning is mostly the talent you put on the two deep.
