Mickelson will skip US Open

Man I know it was a different era, but my dad skipped my birth because they (he played basketball and baseball at Middle Tennessee) had a double-header with Murray State and they were tied for the OVC lead.

Phil's daughter needs to step up like Adrian did for Rocky in R2 and tell him there is something he can do for her graduation...win.

Not that I am in any way in the same universe as the PGA tour players, but I played Erin Hills last summer, and it is hard as hell. I wonder if it is a tacit (or subconscious) admission that Phil knows down deep he can't win there, or even more to the point, that he knows he just can't realistically expect to ever win the Open ever, so he ought to do the right thing by his daughter. It is not like he hasn't made golf a top priority in his life . . .

Been thinking the same thing. Hard to shed a tear for a guy who has won as much as he has. His career will be just fine with or without a US Open title.

Those lists almost never include the exclusive private clubs, e.g., Louisville CC, Idle Hour, Lexington CC, et al.

As for Dale Hollow and Old Silo being top ten in the state. . . .[roll]

Maybe Sportland or Connemara can be on it next year. Talk about resting on your laurels. Old Silo used to be a top notch course.

Tsk....those exclusive clubs generally don't invite GD to do a rating, or turn down when requested as there is no need (Idle Hour, for example, scoffed at the idea a few years back) They have their memberships at capacity or where they want them....a rating serves no purpose.

Love when UKO talks about one golf course vs another, difficulty, playability, shot-making, etc. How would you know? Every course is the same when you just drop kick the ball in 50-150 yard increments until you reach the green.

Short game of a single digit, but can't hit a driver 200 yards, and hits a wood from 150, rarely making actual contact with the ball.

Weirdest golf game I've ever seen for a supposed "athlete" and avid follower of the game -- could take 10-15 strokes of his game w/ a series of lessons, but is too proud & content to be a 95-105 player who has absolutely ZERO concept of what a golf swing is supposed to be and do.

Idiot.

Oh I am VERY familiar with IHCC attitude. But why doesn't Golf Digest state that their ratings are really "The ten best courses in the state where we could get on to actually play, and probably not anywhere close to the best ten in the state"? Hell Kearney Hills is better than Dale Hollow or Old Silo (these days, not when it opened). As an aside, last time I played it, Persimmon Ridge was not in very good shape. The layout is pretty quirky as well, but it is a very tough track, without question. If you can score well there, my hat is off to you.

I just realized I have played 9 of the 10 listed, need to knock Big Spring off one of these days.

Persimmon is a ***** of a course, for sure. Can be brutal.

Leaving out my home track of Champions, Olde Stone is my favorite on the list, think it is a hell of a course. The only time I played Valhalla, it was in absolutely dreadful shape and I would love to try again, because I know I did not get a fair taste of what it is really like. However, no matter what kind of shape it is in, it is so damn hard that I don't think it is much fun to play . . . unless you can play out of grass bunkers with 6 inches of grass in them. Great place for the +4 HCP crowd, and PGA events, but way over my head for sure.

Anybody have the latest scoop on Andover CC? Last I heard it was bought, and they have to keep the golf course, and they are cutting the grass and maintaining it. Anybody heard if it will get opened anytime soon?

Think he said Olde Stone which is a hair above Old Silo.

? I was asking if Old Silo ended up closing. I'm aware they're two very different places. Their website is still up but there was a recent article and reports they had shut down.

If so thats a damn shame. Nice track when it first hit the scene. They have let it go to crap in the last few years though.

Over the years Id heard many guys say the same thing... Apparently the means by which it beats you to death kinda gone here and there... When I played it the rough wasn't nearly as penal as I'd heard it once was but the greens!!! Oh MY!!!
Put your ball in the wrong spot and are putting through the clowns mouth, and the windmill........ Didn't much care for it at my level of play...

^ they have a crazy Jr. Deal out there, apparently. A couple younger guys at my club are East Enders, and carry a membership there as well just b/c of their practice facility, and being near their homes.

I haven't played it in forever -- but will never forget the last time I did. It wasn't fun.
