I was discussing this with a friend last night and both of us agreed that even though we were huge Ole Miss fans and would've killed to play both baseball and football at Ole Miss, neither of us would've been able to turn down an offer of more than $1M, even if the money was spread out over 4 years or so and even though both of us had families that were financially stable.

Apparently Mama wanted him to go to college though, but still I would've taken the deal and given it a run for at least 3-4 years. If it didn't work out, you can always come back to college with the Red Sox footing the bill and you can walk on to a football team see if the NFL works out.

Selfishly, I'm obviously glad he came back, because it sounds like he's going to be a stud on the football field for us, but I still don't know that I understand it.

don't see how anyone could turn down 1.4 mil, and then go outto practice in the most violent of sports.

let's see 1.4 mil play some baseball; and if it don't work out come back to school and play football. OR go play football and take the risk of getting seriously injured and getting nil. not too bright if you ask me.

but that's the only figure that I ever saw. Not saying it wasn't 1.4 mil but it seems that people have just made that number up. Still $1 mil is a ton of money to turn down as an 18 year old.

I also doubt OM bid against the BoSox...

you, of all people on this board, are old enough to know it's not all about the numbers. That's the same thinking that causes kids to drop out of high school for fifteen dollars an hour. They run the numbers.

I may be wrong about this, but I believe I heard there is a rule in place where if a baseball signee is a two sport athlete, the MLB team has the option to spread out the signing bonus over a few years, so for Senquez, I think it's possible that this over $1M figure was spread out over 4 years or so, and there may have been stipulations to it as well. I don't think it was directly comparable to the typical signing bonus.

Still, I probably would've been gone for that kind of money even with stipulations and with it spread out. Obviously he really wanted to go to school though. Some guys are just like that. I remember Alan Horne turning down big money as a first rounder out of high school so he could come to Ole Miss. I got the chance to meet him, and I asked him point blank why he turned down the money, and his answer was that he wanted to go to law school. Baseball wasn't his major motivation. He was an odd character. He ended up transferring to Florida and never got the big payday for baseball later. I'm not sure what he's doing today or if he ended up pursuing the law school thing. Point being, not everyone is driven just by money or sports.

Same could be said for Greg Hardy. He had first round potential, but he talked a lot about wanting to start a greeting card business. Football just wasn't his first priority. He enjoyed art more. Another odd and frustrating character.

We both agreed this was in the gray area. For $2M we'd definitely go pro. For $500K we'd definitely go to school. It's easy to say you can always go back to college with the team paying for it if baseball doesn't work out, but in reality I suspect MLB doesn't have to pay on that guarantee very often. Most guys are going to wind up in 4 years with not a whole lot of money left and while MLB would pay for school, they wouldn't pay any living expenses, etc. It's just not always that easy to go back to school.

I think this is a big break for the Bears. He looks like he's going to be a good player, probably in 2 sports.

He may be good over time but expecting a freshmen to come in and be a impact corner is not realistic in the SEC. The amount of buzz over this on message boards and Twitter is evidence of howdesperatethat fan base is for good news.<div>

My sources who are in offices with big bear boosters is that he got an improvement of the Pat Patterson plan to keep him quite comfortable every month while at UM. I'm sure mamma figured into that arrangement but it is what it is. Got to give Nuttcredit, they come up with whatever they have to to get them andkeep them.

Hey Dawgbreeze. Have we EVER signed a player that we didn't pay or buy? And how in the world have you ever won a recruiting battle with us? Are there that many athletes in Mississippi that don't really like money all that much?

Except when it's your team, that's just a universal truth of football fandom.

Frankly I think it would be a hard decision. Sure that's a lot of money but you only get to be young and in college once. He can always go pro in baseball or football later.

150K. Whether they were going to spread it out over several years to make millions- I don't know.

But, the problem was the Red Sox had spent too much on their top picks and didn't have enough to offer more than 150K.

Todd4state, quite making Junk up to belittle the offer, not only did rivals report it but the Beat writer for Boston globe and weei in Boston that offer was 1.3-1.4 mil signing bonus over 4 years because he was dual sport... He turns them down for final time at 1030cst, then they allocated thOse funds elsewhere not before... Go look at some real news places before u belittle the kids offer.. He was offered 800k this summer the first time before he even came to ole miss, this was bostons last ditch effort.... You seem to know lot about baseball normally but not on this , if you like, maybe you can explain how msu only got 3 drafted players in first place ? And OM got 9 ? On campus

See what you folks can't understand is that some schools don't have to pay them. Has MSU? I am sure they have, but I know for a fact Golson had his hand out early on in the recruiting process and most got off of him thinking he would take money and then take the major league money later. AllI know is one thing about Bear fans, they love to run their mouths and some of your well healed boosters down here told numerous folks that Nutt was having Mamma and daddy up to make sure he stayed. Now, you interpret that any way you want to but my interpretation is he was given more of an incentive to stay. Maybe some day someone will get one of these disgruntled players who were bought that left to spill the beans. It is only a matter of time because Nutt is desperate and there is no doubt what has happened since the dead period last recruiting season starting with CJ. The only thing that bit him in the butt was Auburn came in and out bid you for Whitehead. When your beloved Bears fall on their face this year again it will only get worst because it is the only way you folks know how to recruit and as long as the same money group is in charge, it won't change. Going to be interesting to see how those same bagmen respond when ole Houston has another losing season and if they are willing to pony up $6,000,000 to remedy the situation.

So, every media outlet in the free world that covers this deal was lying about the amount that the sox offered...even the bosox themselves. That's diabolical. I'm guessing that they have now got you going to every message board one at a time to convince everyone that the reason that they got outbid by lowly Ole Miss (also one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen on a message board) is because they pulled the 1.4 million off the table and instead offered a paltry 150k. Jebus.
