I think that's what got him at trouble while at State
Imagine growing up with no one ever telling you what you needed to do, where you needed to be, or laying down any rules. Then all of a sudden you're 18 years old, immature and in a big program with rules, a schedule and a coach that wants you to redshirt.

Good for him getting his life on track and getting a tough college degree.
It's very rare to get that many chances, and it appears he knows that too.

Just speculating... this was early in Mullen being here...
And
1. Mullen was focused, almost myopically, on in-state recruits at first.
2. We needed another quarterback.
3. Dylan was both a QB and Mr. Football for Mississippi.
4. Dylan had name recognition and we got a little pub from it ("Brett: Mississippi State's got it goin' on, huh?").

I had a really good feeling about Favre having a chance of being Todd Reesing 2.0. They were the same size, had the same strengths, and both came from good high school programs where they put up big numbers without getting any attention for them.
I think with a different attitude he could have had some version of success. I'm not even talking about staying at State. If he hadn't had a cloudy head, gone to a better JUCO, and kept his focus on what was important, I think he could have been a starting D1 QB. He's had the skill. Just not the mindset.
