Here's the recap I posted a couple of weeks ago. This year will just be added to the list of disappointing years.
Last year was a massive, massive disappointment. It
started with Rider, continued with Richmond and Western Kentucky, built
steam with Alabama and Arkansas, and came to a head at Auburn and on
senior day. We had no business being in the NIT. That is another fact.
I
don't judge our seasons on the final record. Fair or not, I judge it on
one thing: how good I think we should have been. In truth, that's what
we all do whether we realize it or not. Some people have unrealistically
high expectations. Some people, in my estimation, are satisfied with
far too little. I'd like to think I am a moderate on this issue. I don't
expect another Final Four, ever. I do expect to be in the NCAAs about
1/2 to 2/3 of the time with about half of those as a decent seed (6 or
better). If you do that, you will eventually advance. I could live with
the earlier flameouts if we had followed that up with stronger
performances, but our regular season play made advancing past the first
round difficult, and the second round nearly impossible. The regular
season is why I say we are not meeting expectations. At least MY
expectations.
For example.....
The year before when we
won the SECT, same story. That team was good enough to win four games in
four days, but not good enough to beat Charlotte, San Diego (not San
Diego State mind you, San Diego), a down Washington State team, a way
down Texas Tech team, or a down Cincinnati team. We also closed out
February losing 5 of 6, putting us in position to HAVE to win the
tourney to make the NCAAs. I am glad we did, but we got shipped cross
country and got our *** whipped. Another disappointing season.
The
year before that (2008) was probably the most disappointing of all.
Rhodes, Gordon, Varnado, Stewart, Hansbrough, etc......easily the most
talent Stans has had other than 2004. We lost every single
non-conference game of any consequence that year. Clemson, Southern
Illinois, Miami (OH), Miami (FL), and throw in South Alabama to boot.
OK, we beat Missouri, who finished 16-16 and way out of the NCAAs. I
won't complain about being 12-4 in the league, other than to say I can
guarantee you no player would score 40+ points on my team while making 7
straight threes or whatever it was. He might shoot a lot of FTs, but he
would not hit that many threes. So then we go off to Atlanta as a
favorite to win the SECT, and get beat by Georgia. Georgia. Not Mark
Fox's UGA. Dennis Felton's overmatched squad playing their second game
of the day. The crappy non-conference and the SEC choke cost us at least
one line in seeding in the NCAAs, and we end up an 8 seed where we
promptly bowed out in the second round. Of all the seasons to gripe
about, this one deserves the most.
The year prior, 2007, guess
what we did? Lost all of our notable non conference games, then
struggled to an 8-8 SEC record. But we won the West!! NIT that year too,
which is probably where the talent deserved.
In 2006 we were just pitiful after losing so many players. Every school needs a rebuilding year now and then. This was ours.
Other
than 2008, the 2005 season was the next biggest disappointment. A first
team All American returning, along with Frazier, Power, Harper and
Ervin. There was even a young Charles Rhodes on the bench had we chosen
to play him. We lost our two most notable non conference games that year
too, and beat up on a bunch of nobodies. We struggled to a 9-7 SEC
record, and ended up an 8 seed, eventually losing to Duke. No doubt
Timmy and Branden were huge losses, but from a 2 seed to an 8 seed with
what we had coming back? Disappointing.
This is why we have to
take a hard look at the overall state of the program. I would love to
see Rick reverse this and have us challenging for a top 2-3 spot in the
SEC and an NCAA seed better than 8. But the past six years plus this one
are not very encouraging.
