I saw ESPN making a big deal of this. Honestly, if the World Cup was every year and not every 4, I think the ratings would be much, much lower. Every 4 years is just enough for American fringe fans to give a ****. Just like the Olympics. Hell, I think the X-Games ratings are suffering from a bit of overexposure. It used to be a once a year ordeal that I would watch. Now it seems like twice a month I'm seeing people doing backflips on snowmobiles. For that reason, I don't get amped up for the big X-Games event.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder...

And only 100 million behind the Super Bowl!!! Yay World Cup..

The only sport that has less viewers is hockey...

True, but it was also on a Monday at 5PM. If they could get a primetime game in America, it would see a bump, but still no where near the NBA Finals game 5 viewership.

I think most of us don't really care about world wide numbers. We all know soccer's popularity worldwide.

You're right, every 4 years is enough for the fringe fans. The difference is, the younger generations are not fringe fans. World Cup viewership in the US will grow for the next 50 years. As will EPL viewership, Champions League, and even MLS.

I watch very little league soccer but if there is a Portland or Seattle MLS game on in their home stadiums - I will watch. Unbelievable atmosphere.

And lets be honest, we're one of about a half dozen states that don't even border a state with an MLS team. Or even an NASL team for that matter. We have about as limited an exposure to soccer as anywhere in the country. You have to make an effort to be a soccer fan here. Perhaps Mississippians' perspectives on the future of the game aren't the most informed.

its only like the 5th or 7th (cant remember which) time ever in fifa world cup history that a team has won when the opposition takes 70% of the shots on goal. pretty crazy.

would have been nice for the Portugal match to be on ABC

That would give you some sort of answer.
