A friend of mine invited me to play on his local 9-hole course called Sweetens Cove. I passed. 9-holers are goat ranches.

I grew up on a 9 holer that was surprisingly well taken care of, and cheap due to cheaper maintenance. The so called superintendent made rules up (or maybe all 9 holers are the same) and he always placed 2 pins on each green with different colored flags. If playing 18 you played one color flag on the first time around, the other color one next time around. Also told everybody to vary their tee position, first time around play from the front or ladies tee, next time men's or back tees. I thought it was pretty clever but never cared much for the game though.

Play it often. Great little course for your short game. One Course is another cheap 9 hole on 59 north of gulf shores, around $30. It's part of the Craft Farms complex.
When we had a tournament a couple of months ago in Foley I saw the road that runs by the fairway on that course was closed. I bet that sped up play. A friend of mine backed off 5 times on that tee box because of cars.

I realized you were talking about One Club. That is a fun course with multiple balcony hazards lol. I played one 9 smart and one round aggressive. I shot 43 on both 9s but the smart 9 was all pars and bogeys the dumb round was birdies and doubles or worse.

That’s Gulf Links where the road is closed. That’s the tightest 18 hole I’ve ever played. The T box for your next hole will be mere couple of yards from the green you just finished It’s like a par 64 course.

When is the last time you’ve played it?
Not too long ago. The shape a course is in is only one piece of the puzzle when considering if it's a top five course in the state or not. The layout and toughness, however, are the main factors. It's a beautifully maintained course. But it's not a top five course in the state.

It’s funny seeing Reunions price and people debating it being top 5. Tiger point isn’t in the top 500 in Florida. It’s probably not in the top 20 in just the panhandle. I did check other Pensacola courses and they are all between 45-65. Lost Key is 120, but you’ll spend more money on lost balls than that.

But name 5 better courses. I would say Mossy, Fallen Oak, and CCJ are better. Think you could argue Reunion better or as good as any other. Last time I played Waverly, it was in poor shape. Preserve, Bear, HCC, and Annandale are great courses too. Dont think you can say they are clearly better than Reunion.

Yes, Reunion is in good shape but it's just so dang boring. Variability of play from day to day is quite narrow compared to other courses in the state.

Waverly, Mossy, Fallen Oak are probably top 3. After that CCJ, Reunion, Preserve, Bear, Annandale is a good list however you want to slice and dice those. Never played HCC..

I think this is a good list, top 3 are 100% correct. I always thought Lake Caroline was nice but haven't been there in several years.

If you’re in the Memphis area. Glen Eagle, on the Naval Base in Millington, is a steal. $43 covers greens fees and a cart on weekends. The course is in good shape, greens are very good for a public course.
Glad to hear the course I grew up on is still in good shape. Forest Hill just north of Millington is a nice course that's a good deal too.

Being in the golf business, I can answer why the prices have gone up. All the fertilizer and chemicals that it takes to maintain a golf course prices have sky rocketed on us in the last 3 years. Some as much as 300 percent.

I stopped playing right after covid because of this reason. Added up my golf expenses for 9 months and all in it was close to $10K. (GF's, carts, equipment, etc..)

For me, I can't be a decent player unless I play a lot and I'm no longer willing to pay what it costs to play a lot.

And also.. about the most frustrating thing in the world is having a membership to some local course and them booking tournaments 3 of every 4 weekends during the summer.

I doubt I ever go back to it.
How are GF (girl friends) part of golf expense?***

Yes, they've all gone up. It's now $60 to play 18 at freaking Wedgewood in OB.
I love Cherokee Valley in OB, but haven't played in 5 or so years. So, I cannot imagine how much their fees are now. Memphis has a few good public courses that are reasonable, but you have to remember to take your Taurus Judge with you loaded with .410 defense loads.

Lumdawg,
Where are you located, in the business? I agree that cost are rising, not only in fert & chem, but labor is outrageous, not to mention equipment prices and or leases.

Only time I’ve played Cherokee the last several years is in tournaments so I have no idea what the greens fees are. Wedgewood and Cherokee are still in good shape. WW was a bit of a goat ranch for a while but they have turned it around.
