Unfortunately Webster’s closed. I hadn’t been there is several years, but a neat place. The Crystal Grill closing broke my heart though, especially closing with no warning.

Guy's closed in Vaiden and so did the mexican restaurant they had. They did build a brand new Vaiden Feed & Seed store, so I reckon that's good. Guy's was extremely high though and it had passed ownership a few times.

Kids are out the house, getting paid is next, I hate people, quality of life is a plus.
If getting paid is 1st and you don't love people, then greenwood should be fine assuming the job is going to pay well.

COL should be low as hell in Greenwood. You can probably find a good house for cheap. Might can even find something in the county away from everyone.

Define quality of life? like shopping? music? healthcare?

Guy's closed? Damn. Carmack right down the road is, or was, for sale as well.

That sucks.

As a young tyke, we went to Guy’s regularly (late 70s-early 80s), it was good and the parking lot was always full.

Didn’t they have a food truck that come to Carrollton several years ago, or was that another restaurant?

Every time I went through Greenwood and had to pick up a guy I work with on the North side of town I was always impressed with the neighborhood in that part of Greenwood. Always women/older folks walking around so I figured that part of town was safe enough. Everything else is awful in Greenwood

I think they did, but that's obviously a thing of the past now.

I've never been but I've always heard the country club in Greenwood is pretty nice and that the golf course is in great shape these days. Like I said I don't know first hand but was told this a few months ago and have heard it before. I assume the club has a pool, tennis courts and all that like most country clubs up there.

Leflore county has highest car tags the state. Town is slowly dying. If you take a job there, buy a house in Carroll county and drive 20 minutes to work. I lived there most of my life before moving to Starkville. Worked at Viking for almost 10 years. Left a month before they laid off a 1/4 of the work force. Now that it's been sold I have no idea how they're doing.
Carroll County at one time had the cheapest car tags in the state because my grandparents had Carroll County tags on their vehicles and lived in Hinds. Let's just say he had connections LOL.

Getting some interest from a company in this area, how bad is it and where would you recommend living if this is a great opportunity?
Like most small Mississippi towns, if you can love hunting, fresh water fishing, and/or golf, it can be ok. Pretty easy drive to Starkville too if you like MSU sports.

Get a house with a pool, join the country club, go to the alleuvian for drinks after work one night a week and see the same people. Go eat there when you want (I think all the other classic restaurants have closed?). Play golf on the weekends. Church on Sunday. Occasional trip to starkville for State sports. Once a year trip down to the Beach or maybe the ozarks or flying out to snow ski if you're fancy. Put on repeat. If that sounds like a nice, relaxed pace of life, greenwood, like a lot of small mississippi towns, could be good for you.

I haven’t been in a while, but unless things have significantly changed, commuting from Carroll county or Grenada or Winona sounds crazy to me. The nice parts of Greenwood used to be pretty nice (at least for a small town) and safe and nicer than what was available in any place within commuting distance. Nothing in Carroll county or Grenada or Winona would make me want to sign up for a commute into greenwood unless you just want to be in the country and find some nice land.

The one thing I might worry about is an exit plan, depending on how old you are and how healthy you are. I'm assuming if you are in Greenwood, you have pretty limited options for healthcare when it comes to specialists and I would assume their hospital can't be great. I guess people drive to Jackson? Or Memphis? I think I'd be hesitant to be somewhere long term without decent healthcare options in 20-30 minutes. But make good money to cap off the career before moving back somewhere I had roots? Definitely would be a potential option.

Tunica used to but when the casino money dried up they raised the tags astronomically.
They used to be about 40 bucks.

Carrollton is an easy 19 mile, four-lane, no traffic drive to Greenwood. Winona would be 30 minutes to Greenwood, but puts you on 55 (easier drive to Jxn/Memphis), plus an hour drive to Starkvegas.

Long time Mayor, Carolyn McAdams, with the help of Viking/Fred Carl (and one other man), has kept Greenwood from turning into a poophole, like every other Delta town with the exception of Cleveland. Fred sold Viking and I don't know how much runway Carolyn has left, when she's gone Greenwood will devolve quickly.

If healthcare is an issue, don't move to Greenwood, other than a routine check up/sinus infection means a trip to Jxn, Memphis or Oxford (which has become the go to for many in the area). The hospital is still open, but just barely, you wouldn't want to have to stay there in any of the few beds left (Grenada hospital is decent though). I have standing orders, if hurt on the farm, get me to Jxn.

Bottom line, if you take the job, be wary of buying a house in Greenwood, if determined to live in Greenwood, try to rent first. There are some beautiful homes there, but I look at a house as an investment more than anything else.

If you long for the days off Mayberry, Carrollton is exactly that. If you want a little more convenience, Winona is the place, but buying a house anywhere in the area is risky.

I second or third all of the Carroll county suggestions.

I mainly replied to tell my story about Guy’s. Buddy of mine has a camp near McCarley some of us hang out at sometimes. Couple or so years ago on a frigid wkend we decided we would go to Guys for supper. We were kinda late by their standards and not many folks left but we hit the buffet and got to talking to our waitress. She coulda been a little redneck crazy cute if not for a touch of the meth mouth. So as the meal goes along, it comes up in conversation that she’s married to man much older than her. No big deal right …but then she says “yeah I met him when I was dating and sleeping with his son”. Welcome to Vaiden MS.

I currently live in Greenwood. Been living here 15 years. Our house is currently for sale and we’re moving to Carroll county. Ready to be out of town and have a larger area for the kids to explore and have fun.

Yeah, that’s what he moved to is the food truck. He did a catfish plate fundraiser with the Scouts a couple weeks back.

Greenville just declared a state of emergency for violent crimes. Curfew from 9pm -6AM until further notice.

Baylor football player from Greenville St. Joe just got shot and killed there yesterday. That place was a sh*thole 20 years ago. Can't imagine how bad it is now.

Worked and lived in Greenwood back in the day. Late1990's. Had several nice restaurants there for a town of about 20K. Not sure if they are still there though. The August sunset was one of the most amazing sights I have ever seen in those flatlands. LIke a giant orange basketball sitting on the horizon. I was a quality engineer for an automotive company and not sure if it's still there or not either. Seems like Baldwin Piano had a plant there and Milwaukee Tool had a big distribution center too. Of course, the biggest thing in town was the Corporate Headquarters for Viking Corp. which made extreme high-end appliances. Lot of smaller to midsized businesses. Fairly vibrant town for a small town. Amtak has a stop there too. You could do a lot worse.

I could write a novel here.
Cliff Notes

If the money is too good, do the Carrollton/Winona thing or Grenada etc.

Do not, DO NOT, buy a house in the delta. You might as well throw your money down a hole.

Lived in Greenwood early 2000s and loved it because of all the great restaurants but times have changed.

Like others have said, I would not buy a house in Greenwood.

I know I've already said it, but it is really amazing to see people recommend Carrollton or Winona over Greenwood. Grenada is not as shocking but still pretty shocking to see people recommend commuting from Grenada. Is Greenwood really that bad now? Or are those other places not quite as terrible as they used to be. Those places were all significantly less nice 20 years ago.

I can't imagine a house in any of those places is a great investment. But I also can't imagine they have great rental stock either, so you're probably going to have to make peace with your house not providing you a hedge against the price of homes in a place you might want to live after you retire.

Outside of maybe Leland and Cleveland, it’s a third world country. Seriously. Unless you own a large tract of land that throws off a nice rental check, there’s no reason to be there. The only way I build/own a house there would be out in the country on land I own. We quit farming 2 years ago. Thank God.

Man, I guess I need to go through the Delta again. Not surprised that Cleveland would be singled out as a relatively good place, but Leland was not on my bingo card as an exception in the Delta. It was always Cleveland because of DSU and Greenwood because of Viking that were the only places not dying. Or maybe more accurately that were dying slowly rather than quickly.
