Dear MRA Families,



Your MRA Board of Trustees has been involved in an extensive and exhaustive search for a candidate to hire as MRA’s High School Principal for a two year period with the anticipation that this same individual may then transition into MRA’s Headmaster position following the retirement of Tommy Thompson at the end of May, 2014. I am very pleased to announce that we have hired William Thurman (Termie) Land to fill this position of High School Principal.



Mr. Land has been serving as the Headmaster of Pillow Academy since June 2006. In addition, during Mr. Land’s career he has been Headmaster at Heritage Academy and Lamar School, worked for Holmes Community College, Hopkinsville High School, Indianola Academy and North Sunflower Academy. Mr. Land has served on the MAIS Executive Committee from 1996 to 2003. He is a Delta State University graduate. Mr. Land is married to Lisa Williams Land and has two children, Mary Kendall Archer married to John Archer, and Jacob, a student at Mississippi State University.



Mr. Land comes very highly recommended for this position. We are extremely excited to see him and his family come to MRA. The Board is confident that Mr. Land will be a strong asset to our current administration and we look forward to working with him in the future. We hope you all will welcome Termie Land and his wife Lisa to MRA as well.



We will be sending further announcements as to when Mr. Land will be visiting MRA to meet the staff, students and Patrons of MRA.

Today I have accepted the resignation of Greg Self, high school principal and associate headmaster effective May 31, 2012. The acceptance of his release from contract is bitter sweet in that he did a marvelous job in his current position and enjoyed the respect of both our students and faculty. In his reasoning for his move to another school, Hartfield Academy, he said that the Lord was leading him to this school. We shall miss his work ethic and the contributions to our school.


We wish him the best as he continues in his educational endeavors. We thank him for his efforts and his integrity in handling his office. Thompson stated,” Greg worked very hard in all aspects of his job and is a very special man.”


I was notified by Greg that he was taking his wife Elise Self as his first staff hire to Hartfield Academy in May. We shall miss Mrs. Self for her teaching ability, for her rapport with students and her sweet spirit. Elise is certainly an asset. “Elise is going to leave a void in our faculty and be sorely missed by her fellow educators and by her students, “stated Thompson.

I don't think he will be missed all that much. If his son wasn't a good football player, I'm not sure he ever gets the job in the first place.

Dear Hartfield Parents:

Over the past four months, I have had the privilege of meeting and getting to know the staff, many parents, and the students of Hartfield Academy. Much has happened in that time, and I have seen the Hand of God active and alive at our school. There are 62 men and women who have been asked to be part of Hartfield Academy. At this time, however, I need to let you know that Mr. Greg Self has decided to stay at Madison Ridgeland Academy. I am deeply indebted to him as he helped to shape the curricular choices in our high school and recommended the hiring of many superb staff members. We wish him well as he continues to be a blessing to MRA.

Moving forward, I now have the opportunity to take on the dual role as principal and headmaster. Combining these two roles will allow me to be more involved with the students and the staff, which I thoroughly enjoy! The leadership team consisting of Ms. Fletcher as the middle school lead teacher, Mrs. Martin as elementary principal and Mr. Davis as the Athletic Director has already been in place. We will immediately pursue filling the position of Dean of Students who will assist with the student leadership culture of our middle and high school students.

I am continually reminded of God’s goodness as we are finalizing the summer renovation plans. We are ordering textbooks for our elementary reading and math program, as well the honors and advanced placement level courses and planning various technological upgrades. Enrollment keeps growing and enthusiasm for Hartfield Academy keeps spreading. God is faithful!

Many of you have asked how you might help with the renovation projects. I will be sending out what I call a “barn-raising” request for help. We will need a lot of painters and demolition experts – those who are better with a sledge hammer versus a hammer in moving walls and taking out old fixtures and tables. Also, we will be sending regular emails concerning booster club meetings, as well as parent-teacher organizational (PTO) meetings.

I leave you with the scripture found in Ephesians 3:20-21, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever!”

I my kids are not in high school yet so I may be out of the loop. Most that I spoke to were not happy about him leaving MRA.

I know that the guy they were replacing him with was not something a lot of parents were thrilled about. From what I was told, many at Pillow were glad to see him move on.

but he is well respected and fairly well liked, and even the folks that don't like him, if they were honest with you, would probably tell you that they respected him. The Jr. High principal, Smith, is the one who is not liked, especially by the kids, but is a good administrator...

I think Hartfield will be ok in time, especially if that don't build another public high school in Rankin county as I hear space and class sizes at NWR are becoming an issue.

But for now it's tough on them. Being new some people are going to want to see how it plays out. Plus there are many excellent public schools in Rankin county and East Rankin Academy I think is pretty solid as well.

Greg Self is an excellent school administrator and a fine Christian man. Elise Self is an outstanding teacher as well. Things didn't work out and they want to stay at MRA. We have all made decisions we wish we could take back and I am sure that is the case here. I dont know if Brian Smith is coming back to MRA or not, I do know he also is a fine christian man but a tough disiplinarian, that is why the kids probably would like to see him go. If they are allowed tocome back, I think it shows how deep the MRA family really is. These are tough times for the Self family, and I really don't understand why this subject isbeing debated here. By the way Greg's son was a hell of football player who worked hard butbattled concussions and is now pursuing his education and football careerI believe at the Naval Academy.

And if I were going to start a private school in Mississippi, the first person I would call would be Greg Self. You idiots that say he isn't respected or liked at MRA are just that, idiots. He's the best administrator of any private school in Mississippi.

I left MRA before he ever arrived. As far as Brian Smith goes, people hate him. He is a hypocritical douche. School would be better off if he left.

There's not many of us that could announce our resignation, have our replacement hired, and six months after we resigned get our old job back. The question is what does MRA do with Land?

I have never heard any negative talk about Greg. Really, like 615 said, if you can resign 6 mos ago, have your position filled, and come back and get your old job back speaks volumes to me. Unless, he has some damming photos of board members screwing chickens or se type of farm animal. Then, "Well played sir"!
