I have to go to a convention in Biloxi for work. What is the best seafood restaurant down there? I've googled and found Mary Mahoney's, Ole Biloxi Schooner, among others. What do ya'll recommend? Most look good.

And to make it sports related, I ate an entire half-seafood platter from Deanie's in New Orleans before Croom and his boys cashed in their check against Tulane in 2007. I was still standing, and the only time I got sick was on Gabe O'Neal's pick six return when I started jumping up and down. That was a bad idea after eating twelve pounds of seafood. I was able to contain myself after that.

Good times.

Mary Mahoney's is very good, but also pricey. If you don't eat there, I would recommend grabbing a gallon of gumbo from there before you leave town to take home. Schooner is a great choice for lunch. They have a daily special plus the regular menu. Jazzepi's in Biloxi is also good, but its not all seafood, and also pretty expensive. You can go across the bridge to Ocean Springs to McElroys Seafood or Mikey's on the Bayou. Most of the casinos have good food too.

Also, Anthony's in Ocean Springs is pretty good. Also, on that same road on the back bay, there's a pretty nice seafood restaurant (Not sure of the name, Michaels or something).

of all the ones mentioned so far. But also check out Emril's new place (Gulf Coast Fish House) over in west Gulfport at the Isle of Capri Casino on Hgwy 90. Its right next to Vrazels.

Chappy's in Long Beach used to be really good. I haven't eaten there since Katrina so I don't know how it is now. You could also try the Harbor View Cafe. It's fairly cheap and you get a ton of food. Pretty damn good fried shrimp, too. If all else fails, just eat the buffet at one of the casinos. The Grand in Gulfport used to have a really good one, especially if you like crab legs.

Woman that runs that place has a big time hard on for everybody - absolutely rude. I second Anthony's Under the Oaks or Phoenicia in downtown Ocean Springs. If you go to Phoenicia take your own wine. They don't serve alcohol (?) but open and serve yours for no charge.

Mahoney's is great. I mean really great. If it's fine French cuisine you're after, Mahoney's all the way. However, if you want REALLY good steamed, grilled, fried, or blackened seafood(King crab legs, charbroiled oysters, royal red shrimp, huge freakin lobsters), the Jourdan River Steamer between I-10 and Kiln is the best place on the coast. Ask anyone down there. http://www.jourdanriversteamer.com/

It appears that you are into the Fried seafood angle. Here are a couple in Gulfport:

Long time favorite. Trout Amandine is not to be passed up. I never miss it when I go home, however I have heard anechdotal reports that they are slipping a bit. May or may not be true.

Mary Mahoney's is wonderful. Had my first date with my wife 40 years ago, eating in the "old slave quarters" as it was called at the time. Order the Presidential Platter for an appetizer (for four). Gumbo is very good. I'd rather spend my money there than at Jocelyn's.32 on top of IP is excellent with an awesome view.

Biloxi Schooner is good, still does "pressed poboys" in the old Rosetti's style. For lunch we love BB's in Ocean Springs. Not a pressed poboy, but great stuffings. The seafood special poboy literally has shrimp and oysters spilling out on the plate.

If you get over to 'goula find Bozo's on Ingalls Ave. It's a dump/dive but great shrimp poboys (or plates). Get there early before the lunch crowd to avoid the wait.

Living in CO is wonderful, but I miss the coast seafood almost as much as SEC sports!

And 32 is good, if you feel like dropping about $500.

I beg your pardon. In the 60s and 70s the first room to your right as you enter Mary Mahoney's was known as the Old Slave Quarters. I am a coast native, now pushing 70 and still visit the coast a couple times a year. Never lived in Oxford and only eat there when someone else buys.

Chappy's is long gone. Slabbed by Katrina. I recommend Vrazel's. Ate there a month ago. One of the specials was flounder with crabmeat stuffing. Ummm. Whitecap and Lil Raysused to be good reasonabbly priced homestyle seafood. Haven't eaten there since Katrina. Blowfly on back bay Gulfport has decent fried shrimp(steaks suck). Good view too.

I love alot of the places already listed. Half Shell is a fairly new place in downtown Gulfport (Hwy 49 and 13th) and has a pretty big seafood menu -- not to mention a variety of oyster dishes. There's also 3 new bars surrounding the place if you are looking for a little nightlife after dinner.

Jourdan River Steamer is fanstastic but is a long drive from where you'll be.

The Chimney's on the beach in Gulfport was a very popular restaurant that got wiped by Katrina... it is newly reopened in the same location...used to always have very good seafood and alot of charm. Can get pricey.

In general, Vrazel's, Phoenicia (Ocean Springs), Mary Mahoney's, Anthony's, Joclyn's, ......... etc. You can eat all week on the Coast and not go wrong once. The only place where you may go wrong that I've seen mentioned is Emeril's Fish House --- they've had a rough go of it. Maybe it's better now, I don' know.

http://www.chimneysrestaurant.com/

menu is available on their facebook page - they just opened back up after Katrina.

For a local seafood place - Taranto's Crawfish 12404 John Lee Road, Biloxi, MS 39532-9646
I prefer it over previously mentioned places like Back Bay or Blow Fly Inn.

Also the Jourdan River Steamer is great but probably too far from where you'll be staying.

White Cap for Surf and Turf
Aunt Jenny's in Ocean Springs Best fried Catfish and shrimp in the world.
Anthony's right behind Aunt Jennys not exactly seafood but still great.

All owned by the same Family as someone said before.

Aunt Jennys is the best deal as far as price.

Lil Ray's sucks. I never go there. Expensive and highly overrated. The schooner is good and so is Phonecia's in Ocean Springs. For lunch the White Cap is good and you get your money's worth.

of course Mahoney's is the best but like has been said, you will shell out some cash.

McElroy's is the only other place I really like down there though. I tried most places when I lived there. The half shrimp poboy and gumbo combo is the way to go.

Trapani's in Bay St. Louis is always good--they're now inland on Hwy 90. Lookout 49 in Gulfport north of I-10 and Salute in Gulfport (on the beach) are also good, owned by the same people.

If you care for sushi, Chef Scott's in Ocean Springs is terrific and also BYOB.

Don't know if it's still there or not.
I'll second the recommendations for Mary Mahoney's, Vrazel's, McElroy's, the Blow Fly and Emeril's Gulf Coast Fish House (try the shrimp and grits. I'm pretty sure the grits were cooked in pure cream and garnished with bacon grease). I used to live down the street from Lil' Rays, and I've never had a bad meal there.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to stare at the 8" of snow we're getting on top of the 6 already on the ground here in the seafood-deficient Queen City.

Forgot to add that for the quintessential poboy, go to Pirate's Cove in the Pass for roast beef poboy, fries and a Barq's in a bottle. Also will need a roll of paper towel. It's all about the gravy. Best anywhere.
