Gunner Kiel has visited MSU

Folks, it is being reported that Gunner Kiel has already visited MSU and with our staff. I know this board is split about whether we should take him, however, let me offer this.

WE WILL NEVER OUT RECRUIT BAMA, LSU, FLORIDA, and UGA. Due to this, the best opportunity that MSU has to beat these teams is to either have a more experienced senior laden team, or have a generational type QB i.e. Newton, Maziel, or a Manning. I have no idea if Gunner Kiel is a generational type QB, but since no one is sure yet that he isn't, he is worth the risk. Mullen isn't Stansbury. He isn't going to let one turd ruin his program. Remember, that Cam Newton stole stuff at Florida and was kicked off the team. Sometime people change and find their way. In many ways MSU is the perfect place for Kiel, out of the news pressure cooker, off the beaten path, but still in the same conference to compete and beat the big boys. What more could a kid in his position want?

This being said, we are usually the bridesmaid in these situations, and I have no confidence that we can actually pull this off. Hopefully, the coaches will surprise me.

Where are you picking this up from?

Apparently he also said that Kiel wants to go somewhere with a senior QB, and OM doesn't fit that mold. With Russell graduating, there is really no reason for Kiel to pick OM over MSU. We both have young highly touted receivers coming in.

I was afraid you were going to say that.

LOL, good point. Seems like a factual thing though. Rosebowl wasn't making a prediction, just stating the fact that Kiel has already visited. Seems like it would be tough to screw that info up.

Before even learning ole miss had contacted him

I became instantly aware he was going to attend ole miss. This is just how this type of situation ends.

I would take him. Problem is that these types of players are chronically prone to not go to schools like Mississippi State. More prone to go place like Ole Miss, where every male and female alike will worship his every footstep.

If his intentions are to sit a year and start, I don't see him picking Ole Miss. Bo threw 17 ints last year so he's more than capable of losing the job but I don't see him losing it his senior year. I know State currently has Russell, Prescott and ??? and I have no idea what's going on at UT, but it's probably not good.

Before I say what I feel let me say this as a preface. After this season is done more people will begin to question Mullen. As I honestly feel we will end up 5-7. So with that said the following year sets up nicely for us to get back into an 8 win season. I'm pretty confident that Coach Mullen sees the writing on the wall for this year. And knows the next year does set up better. I don't think he's going to be willing to roll the dice to possibly bring in a diva type of player to mess that up. I honestly wish this kid well in his future endeavours but I wish it to be some place else.

As Dan watches our senior qb, our soph qb in a wheelchair, couple of walk ons, and hopes he can get cord to school, I think he will roll the dice. Gunner didnt get kicked off nd. He just left.

Here's what get me: Mullen is a dual threat/spread QB type coach, yet we constantly recruit kids that don't fit his style.

1) Tyler Russell (pocket passer)
2) Dylan Farve (dual threat)
3) Dak Prescott (dual threat)
4) Schessuler (pocket)
5) Cord (dual threat)
6) Gunner Keil (pocket)

We missed on Cam Newton (dual threat), Chad Voytik (pocket passer), Bo Wallace (dual threat) along the way.

So, which is it? Are we looking for pocket guys or dual threat? I feel like Tyler Russell is a bit of a round peg is square hole w/ Mullen, but looking at the recruiting list, it seems like he's the type guy we most desire. It's going to be tough to ever develop much consistently, IMO.

Are the under center plays a sign of changing philosophy a bit? If we can get gunner, we should jump on it

If he could play this year, OM might want him, but with Kincade and Buchanon coming in, he would be in (at least) a 3 way race. They have no idea if Wallace will come back 100% or even 80% this fall, and both Brunetti and Miller suck at passing. They could really use him now, but not as much when he's eligible in 2014. Makes more sense to go with us if he wants to play, but because it makes sense, he'll probably end up at OM...

Which one are we? I think you have the wrong idea of a pocket passer (easily due to our current QB, who is probably one of the slowest QB's I know of). Tyler is the outlier. "Pocket passers" are not always slow and are not always particularly prone to failure in a read-option offense.

After Googling and reading several articles....

this guy seems to be looking for the school with the least amount of QB competion when he becomes eligible. We'd certainly seem to fit that category. Brett Sallee on Bleacher Report wrote a piece urging Kiel to go to Ole Miss and simply wrote it off as he'd have a chance to compete with Wallace, but its hard to think that would be a possibility unless Wallace disappointed this year and Ole Miss didn't meet expectations. He's already transferring away from a guy in the same class as Wallace and he's already redshirted and would only have three years of eligibility. I'm not sure why he'd transfer away from team with a Sophomore starter just to sign with a team with a Sophomore starter, although I wouldn't put it past Freeze to promise him the starting spot just to sign him and get the publicity.

It's gonna boil down to whether gunner wants to go to heaven or hell.

Mullen has shown no willingness to change to more of a pro style offense.

Why do you think he would now? If he didn't change for TR, why would he in the future for Keil.

This is his biggest flaw as our coach, he is either too hard headed or doesn't know anything but the spread offense and is unwilling to try to change. This will be the reason he doesn't have the success he could at State..

He's actually said this offseason that Russell will under center more next season. So we will see how that goes.

Russell is taking a lot of snaps under center this spring, and as dawgstudent says, Mullen has said he will do that more next season. I think(hope) Mullen has learned from this past fall and isn't going to just repeat the same mistakes.

Looks like another

Rosebowl vs PJ debate...

PJ just reported that he can confirm that Kiel has not visited and has not meet with our coaches.

We can only hope we find a FB in the backfield too.. TR needs a pro set to be the most effective at QB.

Rantsports.Com predicts him to us. Don't know anything about the writer of the article. When I Googled "gunner Kiel Mississippi State" I saw the article.

That is ridiculously huge if that happens. We go from a scary QB situation to probably one our best as far as talent on the roster with Dak already there and Kiel and Sandberg coming in.

I didn't think about that. This would totally change the situation of our program. Even in a situation such as Mullen leaving. Having a good QB situation is always attractive to a new head coach.

we'd have to take him of course..........

but I would hate for that to lower Sandberg's asking price. I don't know whether Kiel can run but we know Sandberg can. I'd rather have the known runner.
