What y'all think? Amherst's fans on here are as humble as they come so I want them to be completely honest as well. One of the better rivalries in Central Virginia. GW is 18-9 all time against the Lancers but the Lancers dominated the series from 2003-2010 (6-2). There has been some classic games including GW beating Amherst for their only loss during their 2006 state championship run.

My 2017 prediction:
WHOEVER HAS THE BALL LAST

GW's key to victory
1. STOP SOMEBODY... HELL ANYBODY!!! The secondary has to get better by Friday or Keshon Turner, Frank Ross and Megginson will have a field day! I expect a high scoring game but GW has to make stops!
2. Mix it up! Senior Weber Harris (4 TD's against LCA), junior Carl Poole (1 rushing TD ), and sophomore Wesley Graves (2 rushing TDs) will have to continue to score. Carlos Poole had a solid night passing (150 yards). I look forward to see if he throws the deep ball.
3. Repeat #1!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amherst's keys to victory
1. Control the line of scrimmage. Amherst has massive lines and they have a lot more depth than LCA. I look for Turner and Ross to have big numbers in the rushing game.
2. Throw the ball. The Amherst receiving corps is fast and they have an accurate 3 year starter to throw the ball to them. If Amherst can expose the GW secondary like LCA did then GW will be in for a LOOOOOOOONG night.
3. Stop GW's potent offense. Whoever has the ball last could win. GW made mistakes early but scored on 70% of their possessions on Friday. If Amherst can stop GW's offense and not sputter like they did against Salem in the second half, Amherst will write their own ticket.

This will be a close game but really not impressed with GW's defense against LCA and Amherst has the weapons to expose that. Amherst struggled covering the Tucker kid from Salem. GW does not have anyone of his caliber but they have great athlete's that can do damage. This is a hard game to call but I am going Amherst. Really big game for both teams, so should be a good one.

You said it well DSH. An additional key for Amherst: Did the Salem game take anything out of the Lancers? I hope not, because on paper this looks like it could be a barn burner. I think Amherst should use their huge line to control the ball, limit GW's possessions and wear them down. You can't have a collapse if you limit your mistakes. Amherst can take some risk and keep GW honest with deep balls in man coverage, but that's as far as they need to go.

On the other hand GW needs to score fast and score often. Force the big boys from Amherst to move; therefore, eliminating their advantage. Screens, jet sweeps, and the read option will put the Lance defense on their toes.

Special teams play wins this one. Sorry DSH, pending a let down from the Salem game I think the Lancers win this one in a squeaker. 31-28.

Amherst needs to play both halves, they can win this game. If not for that fumble on the 5 yard line, Amherst would have won that game. It changed their entire momentum. They also need to be able to cover the pass, one guy on the Salem kid, did not help, he was wide open on several plays that won that game. The Amherst players came out pumped and they were ready. Should be an interesting game. Should be a packed stadium again

Somebody hire this guy! Couldn't agree more on the strategy. I'll take GW by 6 points. I think this year they find a way to win close games instead of lose them.

Saying that they would have won the game without the fumble is a bit of stretch. That being said, Amherst is very, very good up front.

This is spot on. Amherst is not a team that you are going to be able to beat physically up front and run the ball well... definitely not inside. Jet sweeps, bubbles, and the other quick plays are definitely the way to attack them.

Fumble shumble...... In the end Salem did what great teams do....adjust...they were in better shape condition wise. The big linemen were sucking air in the end for Amherst. Look for the same Friday. Gw 37 lancers 28

Just sharing my opinion no need for such a response. Amherst played better than expected and last year Amherst proved who was the best. Win or lose Friday it is what it is. Amherst lost 26 seniors and to play the way they did was impressive

In my opinion Salem is like Duke basketball...you either love them or hate them but at the end of the day they win championships. I am not a Salem fan but respect what they have been able to do. They usually have the # 1 recruiting class in the nation also....ha..had to defend wikki because opinions are valuable to this message board.

The thing about it is, I didn't say anything bad. I just made a comment about the fumble on the 5 if not had happened Amherst would have won. That took the momentum out of Amherst. I have also given Salem credit for their success especially their coach. Their fans are the ones that annoy me not their team or players

In the 2006 game Alonzo Poe was the QB, coach Abell made the switch to Peter Rose and the rest is history

I remember that game like it was yesterday. My cousin Larry Claiborne who had a very very very good career at Liberty U had the game winning interception for us that night. That GW team was one of our better teams of the decade. Y'all slaughtered arguably one of GW's best teams to not win a championship the next year in 2007. I think it was 64-30 something. Y'all kept David Wilson in check.

Isn't that the game Wilson had over 200 yards but lost by 30.

I think it has to do with your wording. Saying "would have won" about one fumble in a game that ended up being a two touchdown margin is a bit strong. Saying "could have" would been more appropriate.

I agree with Wikki. A fumble is a huge turning point. Not taking anything away from Salem but a Amherst score would have changed the whole dynamic of that game.

Yessir! That's it! You guys put up 63 on us in the RAIN!! GW was the #1 5a team in the state that year.... Went 10-1 after we played you guys and David fumbled I think 4 or 5 times at Potomac in the NW Region Championship where we lost. I would've loved to have seen us play y'all again that year. I think that you guys are discussion for a top 10 best team in VA all time that 07 season.

I swear, you and Navy, and your dad remember every darn thing about football. I was just mesmerized by you three and the others in front of us at the scrimmage. When you got to naming players from the 60's and 70's by jersey numbers..., utterly amazing.

Oh that was Navy and my pops LOL!!! I'm good high school wise and a little college and pros. Football isn't my strong suit at all, that would be basketball!! I'm decent for a young buck I suppose but I tell ya, I think Black Knights may have me beat on some things!
