What y'all think? Amherst's fans on here are as humble as they come so I want them to be completely honest as well. One of the better rivalries in Central Virginia. GW is 18-9 all time against the Lancers but the Lancers dominated the series from 2003-2010 (6-2). There has been some classic games including GW beating Amherst for their only loss during their 2006 state championship run.
My 2017 prediction:
WHOEVER HAS THE BALL LAST
GW's key to victory
1. STOP SOMEBODY... HELL ANYBODY!!! The secondary has to get better by Friday or Keshon Turner, Frank Ross and Megginson will have a field day! I expect a high scoring game but GW has to make stops!
2. Mix it up! Senior Weber Harris (4 TD's against LCA), junior Carl Poole (1 rushing TD ), and sophomore Wesley Graves (2 rushing TDs) will have to continue to score. Carlos Poole had a solid night passing (150 yards). I look forward to see if he throws the deep ball.
3. Repeat #1!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amherst's keys to victory
1. Control the line of scrimmage. Amherst has massive lines and they have a lot more depth than LCA. I look for Turner and Ross to have big numbers in the rushing game.
2. Throw the ball. The Amherst receiving corps is fast and they have an accurate 3 year starter to throw the ball to them. If Amherst can expose the GW secondary like LCA did then GW will be in for a LOOOOOOOONG night.
3. Stop GW's potent offense. Whoever has the ball last could win. GW made mistakes early but scored on 70% of their possessions on Friday. If Amherst can stop GW's offense and not sputter like they did against Salem in the second half, Amherst will write their own ticket.
