I mean this is UK basketball. We are always going to have expectations but I don't think anyone has the same expectations for this team as we had last year. But here we are at #1. We are going to lose multiple games this year. Nobody is even going to contest that. We will have our moments. But I'm pretty damn happy where we are at right now. But we need Ulis... He is the straw that stirs the drink for this team.

Well, if the biggest redass on the board- BK- hates us then we must suck.

This place has been a lot of fun today.
At least I was nicer than Richie.

Still think that by the end of the year, our ratio of bringing things to the table vs. taking them off will be the highest. Might even be true now if we have any more games like we did against Duke. But tonight was a real stinker and they hit a ton of my pet peeves. I'll be fine in the morning.

That Bahamas trip last year kinda threw everyone's expectations for freshmen laden November basketball out of whack. Getting a huge head start on the competition played a big part in us looking like monsters in November and December. Hell, we never looked better last year than in December.

Played this team better than Maryland did without our most important player. Nobody has blown these guys out and they've played a handful of decent teams outside of the terps. That wasn't a bad team.

It just sucks that the tournament starts tomorrow. Just needed a few months to gel as a team and get the freshmen up to speed and we could've really had a shot at it. If only this team would've been able to get better over time the way EVERY OTHER CALIPARI TEAM EXCEPT ONE HAS.

(Calm down, pussies.)

this is that predictable time of year where we have an off game, one that we win, and the basketball aficionados in this thread all fight over who can sound the most intelligent while simultaneously talking bad about our team.

"our team is terrible, but please allow me to type out a well thought out lecture about several points so that i may mask my redass and hatred with a deep understanding of how the game is played."

hell, we ran out of creative ways to intelligently hate towns last year.

fun times!

Not basketball related, but I think our fans reached a low point this weekend trying to point out something about DJ Eliot dropping the UK from his twitter handle.

Think Humphries is going to play a huge role for this team as the season progresses. He will get in a ton of foul trouble when he plays, but we need his big body in the paint, banging around, pushing, rebounding, etc. Lee is a cleanup guy, and Skal is just wayyyyyyy too soft. Need Humphries to be an Australian early career Magloire type. We need his attitude.

Same old story.

One side ----> all sunshine, WE'RE THE BEST NOBODY CAN TOUCH US. GO ROOT FOR ANOTHER TEAM PUSSIES!!

Other side ----> cautiously optimistic, likes our team, but also uses early season games to point out areas (usually obvious) where we really need to improve to be March-ready. I mean, isn't that what the early season is all about...getting to know your team?

When I watch a game, any game -- I look at the positives AND the negatives as they pertain to the bigger picture...and am comfortable discussing both without going over the edge either way. It's November (err, December).

Some of you are *really* annoying when it comes to this...almost raftard like.

- Hell, Humphries was huge against Duke. That was a nice pickup by Cal. I can't even fathom the talent we'll have on the floor in 16/17.

- My general sports sexism has been well-documented, but the ladies ESPN puts in the booth are really, really good. Lawson and Burke are both terrific.

- I think it may be as simple as this with this squad...once Skal learns to play against physicality and once Murray learns shot selection and moving without the ball, this team is going to be hard to lick.

Skal isn't Davis/Cousins/Towns, and he won't be...different type player.

BUT, he will get better at rebounding. The inevitable comparison to our past freshman big men (some of the best ever) is pretty unfair, but hard to overcome.

-I thought Lawson's point about our guards needing to "help" Skal get involved was excellent. Feed the big guy now and then, and HELP him get engaged in the game. Something Ulis understands, obviously...but last night he didn't get a single post touch. LOL.

-Poor Mulder must be awful if he can't find spot minutes on THIS team, where his only skill is desperately needed...and we've been short a guard in every game between Hawkins/Ulis.

^ well, heading into last night he was .1 from leading our team in scoring through 6 games.

Stop being stupid. He's a finesse/skilled big man learning the college game and how to play against men. Again, he won't be Towns/Davis...but you people have short memories to how those two looked early on. (struggled pretty badly).

- I specifically remember Towns being bashed here in January. He was the worst of our four freshmen. I remember Boogie scoring 5 points and pouting. I remember Davis- as awesome as he was- with only 2 points against UNC. It's going to be a process.

- Can't wait for Maryland and fully-stocked UNC tonight.:raised_hands:

Honest question, aside from being 7 foot tall, what does Skal do well at right now? Free throws?

LOL what he had 26 points like 3 games ago. He has an amazing shot and skill set, you guys being serious?

Also, comparing his stats to Towns last year is not really that accurate either. Towns played like 20 mins a game if that last year at this time. It wasn't until later in the year where he was averaging more minutes. We were still firmly platooning this time last year.

Heading into last night Skal was averaging 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

Through 6 games last year Towns was averaging 7 points, 7 rebounds, and 0.3 blocks.

...Chill. Out.

Murray and Briscoe are above-average rebounding guards, so I think we can get away with Skal not being a monster on the boards. He definitely needs to improve, though. All positions are equally valid imo #showkillerhottake

POSITIVES FROM LAST NIGHT:

- Marcus Pee

- Dominique Hawkins

- Poythress only had one or two baseline moves that left him in an impossible position under the basket

- Briscoe's FT stroke actually looks a little smoother

Anyone notice how low Briscoe's driving layups/whitakerbanks hit on the board? Reminds me of Rondo the way he'll fire a ball "up" the backboard with speed and it somehow just shoots straight down into the hoop.

-I don't see Ulis like that. I could see them cuddling up and watching Friends or something.

If I had to choose 1 person to pound her on this squad, I guess it would be Alex. Briscoe would probably come correct, too.

Skal is a finesse offensive player, but doesn't have an understanding of rebounding. Hopefully that changes. Right now he's a bit soft, though that's understandable given his age. Towns definitely struggled early on with physicality, spacing, etc. Davis averaged 13/9/5 through 7 games, and was an athletic freak, so let's just throw him out.

-I think for once the positive guys were the rational ones in this case. Again, I don't remember anyone being overly optimistic. I'm just not going to get all bent out of shape against a tough team, on a Monday night, in November, without Ulis on the court. Our guards were pretty damn terrible at basketball last night. As it was pointed out I don't think they fed Skal once, not that he was doing them any favors. His first shot was a damn free throw half way through the 2nd half.

Said before the game I actually like playing this one without Ulis. See what areas we really need to address. We can't play the little guy 40 minutes every game. Good experience.

-Mulder looked AWFUL. I mean AWFUL in the limited run he got. I didn't think Willis looked too bad but I guess Cal didn't like his D. He does need to set on those 3's, he tends to pull up while drifting.

-Free throws. F*CK!! Want something infuriating. That's it. We hit a decent clip from there and we cover. The rest of the annoyances I can at least attribute to the growth process.

-Would have liked to see Briscoe run more lead guard in the 2nd. His first 3-4 minutes was about as poor as it gets. He and Murray, at least they actually finish at the rim most of the time. That's a damn relief.

-Poythress keeps showing some flashes of what he could be. After getting pissed he just went MANS GAME for a few possessions. Aggressive body move to the basket, cram on some dudes head, rebound and bodied a put back. Lee is actually showing some real craftiness and touch down there. Lee and Poythress should be consistent games we can count on. One of the two should have a double double every game.

-I like the way Illinios State attacked us. Spread us wide open and drive.

I like what I see from Willis every time he's in...even when he's not hitting shots. He's got a pretty sneaky drive game, gets off 1 almost every time he gets in...needs to finish but that will come with time.

I just like his game, has a completely unique skillset with regards to this team.

People forget that it's been a while since Skal played serious, organized, competitive basketball. I doubt Meal Ticket Prep was doing much for him last year.

Skal is also still trying to block everything, pretty hard for him to grab a board when he's flying all over the place and out of position.

Nerlens did the same thing, arguably worse. He was putrid defensively early on for this reason...out of position pretty much ALL the time.

...by the end of the year, he was a terror.

Skal won't be Nerlens either, but he's already making progress in that area, as Chad mentioned.

Hornsby & Victor will help LSU a ton -- 2 starters, and probably their two 'toughest' players...but yeah, that's just pathetic.

Harmon texted me last night asking if LSU -5 (-200) was "some kind of trick. CoC is picked to finish 9th in the Colonial"

My response: Yes, Johnny Jones. Hope he took my advice.

It's frustrating, but we have a roster that will allow us to put five guys out there in crunch time who can make FT's if we are ever in that situation.

Ulis
Murray
Matthews
Poythress
Skal

I think the misses got a little contagious last night and it was just one of those games. Probably a side effect of no Ulis. Everything was a little off. The only two really ****** FT shooters are Briscoe and Lee.
