Monday Randoms:
- Yeah, that game was PURE UK football. There are some losses that piss you off (pathetic blowouts to better teams, for instance) and then there are losses like Saturday that make you never want to watch another down as long as you live.
- Onto UK basketball. Early thoughts on individual players:
* Murray- needs to learn how to play when his shot isn't falling, but the kid is a stud and I have a feeling he's a BIG GAME PLAYER. Watch tomorrow be his national coming out party.
* Ulis- been kind of underwhelming thus far, but I'm sure he'll get it together. As BBdK has said a million times, dude needs to look to score more often. Getting everyone involved is a noble endeavor, but for us to be great, it has to be he and Murray.
* Briscoe- surprisingly the early leader for my favorite Cat this year. I don't even know how to describe his game. He just seems like the type to do what it takes to win. LOVED his boardsmanship.
* Skal- not physically ready, slow on defensive rotations, slow on passing out of double-teams, needs to protect the rim much better, BUT...his offensive skill set
. I can't recall many 7-footers with such touch- Bosh-esque. He presents a different set of challenges for Calipari, but man, I can't wait to see him in March.
* Willis- he's a rotation player, can swing between the 3/4, gives us length and another outside shooter. Very impressed. Keep it going, D-dub.
* Poythress- need more from him period. Getting stuffed under the backboard is **** he's been pulling since November '12.
* Lee- I've liked him so far. Brings energy. Hitting the glass. His passing has always been underrated. Needs to get ready to battle tomorrow. For once, Duke is tougher than us inside.
* Humphries- not there yet, but he'll be a solid backup by March.
- AS FOR TOMORROW...I don't think we're ready. Unless Murray just goes off, I think we drop this one. I just don't like our D yet. With that said, I think it's a toss up. I'll go Duke 85, UK 83.
- The College Football Playoff is so awesome. Just look at this season- you have 10+ teams hovering in mid-November.
- I love Master of None after two episodes. Unfortunately, the lass isn't a fan. Beginning to have a healthy disrespect for her taste in the arts.
- Looking forward to checking out "The Night Before" and "Spotlight" here in the next few weeks.

Why do we assume that Duke is ready and that UK is not? I have a feeling we're going to get a shitload of easy buckets.
No one said not to criticize, just that the solution everyone wants has already been tried and it yielded similar results.
Our special teams have never been as bad as they are this year. Only the FG kicking is remotely competent. Everything else is straight butt.
I don't give a **** what "efficiency" says. Our field position is consistently bad, it's a miracle if a punt goes more than 35 yards, and our punt returner invented dickfingers.
Don't need my Charlotte Parking Pass to tell me it's going to be a **** crowd Saturday night.
Still, I'm looking forward to the Louisville game as I love the Thanksgiving weekend slot. Guess we'll find out the kickoff time here soon. Frankly, if you're Louisville you wanted us to win that Vandy game. Obviously we're terrible, but we'll be a desperate terrible team next weekend playing at home. Stranger things atkot.

So a ST coach is going to get Landon Foster's leg to work again? Or make Ryan Timmons anything other than fast?
No one is saying our ST don't suck, just that hiring a ST coach isn't likely to fix the main problems we have. Mostly that our punter is physically broken.
Pretty weird watching Ulis struggle a bit...
29% from field, 28% from 3, nearly a 1:1 Assist-to-TO ratio. Of course, I have ZERO doubts he snaps out of it sooner than later...still weird watching him not be damn near perfect.
I saw someone report (re: Tweet) that he was hobbling pretty good on Friday before the game. Gotta wonder if his ankle is a little more tweaked than they're letting on. For a guy whose game is predicated on speed and quickness even slowing him down a bit would make a difference.
Cutcliffe turned down the UT job. He wasn't coming here. He has become Dukes Frank Beamer.
All Cal PGs have struggled in the 1st Half of the season as a starter. Even the great John Wall. He was a turnover machine.
And that's with the staff trying to dick fist those points away too. McGinness was pissed on the sidelines, and you can't blame him.
Didn't say a thing about coaching (I'd bet my ***, though, that the approach to special teams will be completely revamped in the offseason). You would think trying out a different punter would be a consideration, or making him kick rugby-style. They finally figured out Timmons was a trainwreck at punt returner. Only took 9 games. When something isn't working, you try something else. This staff has a bad habit of not doing that and continuing to try to shove a round peg into a square hole. "Maybe it'll work this time!"

The fans get it right about as much as they get it wrong. Would Billy Joe sign a $15-20 million dollar guaranteed contract for a coach with a 7-11 record. If Stoops was a good coach that contract wasn't keeping any decent program away.
Name one coach that looked disorganized, combative and made the same mistakes repeatedly after three seasons that turned it around and became a quality coach?
A former UK star told me Saturday night to find something else to do with my time the next few seasons. He mentioned the large majority of players don't put out maximum effort in practice/games. They don't spend that extra time on their individual things they could improve. He said it is bad and will continue to be bad. He has never said anything negative about the football dept./program in almost a decade until that conversation.

Holy ****, yes, hiring a special teams coach would help. Are you serious? A special teams coach could have called a timeout Saturday and saved us five yards that cost us 3 points. A special teams coach could tell Timmons to stop fair-catching the ball inside the ten. He caught it at the 2 once this year. A special teams coach could be trying different guys out and seeing who on the team is better than Timmons, seeing if there are other options than Foster or asking Foster wtf the problem is and talking about his technique. Yes, it doesn't take a Vince Lombardi to do most of this ****, and maybe some of these problems wouldn't have answers, but some of them would, and it's important to have a guy who's not a complete numb nut doing it as his sole responsibility. Yes. It would make a difference.
Still not sold that Cal will play Willis as part of the REAL rotation when the competition steps up, but I hope he does. Guess we will see tomorrow...
Kid can play, I love all the things he brings to the table, which seem to be MUCH more than just 3pt shooting. Love the way he moves out there.

Willis is still our best "passer of the ball" from the perimeter to the block- and he has been since his arrival. Lost art to feeding the post guy in good position. Guess I will stop with the transfer to UL narrative until he gives me reason later in the season.

I think we'll be all right. I think Murray is much more than a streak guy and Ulis will get it together. Briscoe is enough to be a threat. Much more concerned about physicality down low and rim protection at this point.

We have lined up with 8 players in punt coverage. 8. And that was with a game on the line.
We have dropped waaaaay too many returns.
We have fair caught the ball at the touching 2 yard line.
When we do catch the ball on punts, there is a hold or block in the back 97.6% of the time.
We have given up punt return and KO return TDs within minutes of each other.
I don't know much about your ST efficiency mumbo jumbo other than it is full of ****.
Every single time a tough decision needs to be made, it ends up like an episode of the Three Stooges. Punt, FG or go for it? Set up the return, go for the block or look for the fake? TOO MUCH PRESSURE! I dunno what to do…

This Special Teams unit of the Kentucky Wildcats sucks ***. I would like to see something done to attempt to correct this problem. I think, perhaps, a coach dedicating some actual time and energy toward it would be a plus.

Been watching more NBA because now we're taking over the league, and it definitely has elucidated how much better they are. Absurd, really.
Think it factors in to us when we watch our team and think "we're not ready." Well, we're certainly not ready for Davis, Wall, or Boogie, but we can handle Duke.

Date-centric weekend for the lass after my ultimate Hall Pass, did a couple of 'new' (for us) things around town.
Go Ape Canopy/Zipline Tour: It was awesome...was pretty skeptical after doing some cool ones at other places, but it was by FAR more challenging/scary.
After a quick training, you're basically on your own for 2 hours playing in the Canopy of Jefferson Memorial Forest. No guide, nobody checking your straps, etc. It's all on you. There is a legit element of danger and some severe nerves especially at first, if you're weird about heights. Definitely recommend for a fun way to spend a few hours outdoors. Nice workout as well. Course takes a good 2-3 hours, depending on if you're stuck behind anyone. It's beautiful up there, had never been -- had it lumped in my mind as the same thing as Bernheim for some reason.
Derby Dinner Playhouse: Lass had been wanting to go here forever, and it was a nice time/cool setup. Saw Bing Cosby's White Christmas, her favorite movie. Production was fantastic, singing/acting/ excellent -- Food was actually pretty good, $3 beers, $5 cocktails -- another nice way to spend a few hours.

This year isn't all that bad. I mean, it is entertaining as F. We may have managed to hire the football Billy G. That's hilarious. The way he calls media/fans dumb is great entertainment.
The Patrick Towles stuff has been *gold*. This clown showed up to start the season dressed as Harry Potter...only at Kentucky. That wasn't even the worst thing he did. He did cut his hair, though!
Stoops. Wow. He's not blessed with good words, either. It's funny, but mostly sad. He has provided some good entertainment though like when he called in to the local radio show to tell all the fans how pissed he was, and then kind of got pissed at the radio host for asking questions. Also, all the times he turns *really* red on the sidelines as he begs and pleads with officials to cut us a break. That's my favorite Stoops thing - he gets really red. Probably his best attribute so far.
Special Teams. We literally forgot about that part of the football equation. That's beyond gold. Pretty rare. I'm still kind of impressed by this. I wouldn't mind if we just made this "our thing".
Our shiny new football upgrades. Those are good. I think everybody enjoyed watching that project come together.
I'm conclusion, those are 5 really good things our team has done this year to entertain me, Mashburned, and I very much look forward to next years QB Battle.

He's still big, and there's potential there, but right now he's just hilarious looking. Like a fat welfare momma with skinny legs and a huge pooch.
