WEDNESDAY TAKES:
- Damn, that felt good. [banana]
- The Champions Classic ALWAYS tells us something. In 2012 and 2015, it told us we were the easy favorite and frontrunner. In 2013 and 2014, it told us we had our work cut out for us. If last night was again an indication, we're one of the teams to beat this year.
- Dribble penetration is to college basketball what running the ball is to football. Teams that can both get the ball into the paint consistently and on the other end, stop dribble penetration are HARD to stop. That's how UConn won two titles this decade. UK's 3-headed monster is just relentless. They attack, attack, attack, and then on D are up in you all game. Hell, we only went 3-10 from outside and it didn't matter.
- I was very impressed with our D. That was an early concern for me, but I was off.
- [laughing] at the joke of Duke having the #1 class. That was shown to be a farce.
- Ulis was in total control all game. Just a wonderful game from the senior...errr sophomore.
- Briscoe brings the swag to this team. Like his two bandmates, he's always in control. Makes smart decisions with the ball. Good defender. Good finisher.
- Murray's a superstar. He'll hit those shots eventually.
- Poythress battled but 3-10 FG is horrible.
- I loved what I saw from Lee on the other hand. He may not be all that physical but he made up for it with energy. Kid's ready for primetime.
- Humphries- what a revelation. Cal stole one there. He'll be a solid role player this year and one of the better 5s in the country by next year.
- Labissiere is going to take some time. We all know. Probably did him some good in the longrun getting a bull like Plumlee the first game. Good thing Calipari/Payne are the best in the business at preparing bigs.
- This is going to be a perimeter oriented team, but different than in 2011, as our calling card is getting into the paint more than shooting (which we'll also be really good at). We have some good pieces inside, too. And we're going to guard the hell out of you. We'll drop a few- I can already see Vandy getting us with a big game from Jones and their outside shooters- but I like my team better than anyone else's.
- As for Duke. they'll get it together and have a gawdy record, high seed (probably a 2) when it's all said and done, but this team is much more like their early exits than their champs. Thornton has some potential. Allen will be good. Ingram is one of the more interesting players in CBB. And their two veteran bigs are solid.
- [laughing] @ Kansas. Stayed up late for that one but it was worth it. The Jayhawks have, as I said last night, about 8-9 guys I like, but no one I love (and that includes Bill Self).
Kansas has some pieces, but Self doesn't know what to do with them. They lack a super talent, too. Ellis has developed into a Darius Miller-esque vet, but he's no star. Selden has never shown he can be the guy you thought he would be. You look at Ulis and Mason- one a surehanded, a pure efficient PG who thinks about everyone else first, and the other a guy who goes 5-15 and consistently makes boneheaded decisions in the clutch. Graham and Svi have their moments, but aren't there yet. Greene's a sharpshooter, but nothing else. I like Bragg but Self would rather play his experienced, limited bigs (see Alexander, Cliff). They need Diallo in the worst way.
- Michigan State is limited (especially with Nairn at the point), but of course they're gritty as all hell. Valentine has turned into Evan Turner- just does it all. What a game- 29/12/12 :boom:. The freshman McQuaid looks like a milk-guzzling O'Poyle but is a pure shooter. Same with Forbes.
