Maybe I'm crazy but I really don't get this 'in a year when nobody is really good' talk. I see Kansas, Oklahoma and (sadly)unc and I see really good teams. Those are the three that stand out to me when they are on their game. And when they are on they could compete against last years elite teams.

Listened to the Mags' podcast with Gottlieb last night. Fanastic stuff. The vibe in these podcasts is great. More serious bball type of stuff with an inside behind the scenes slant. Felt like it was an off the record type of convo taking place over a few drinks.

Hate saying this but Gottlieb was awesome. Love hearing the stories about certain players and coaches and what makes them all tick. Touched on Cal vs Pitino, what coaches would legit look at UK if/when Cal leaves, the business behind big basketball, etc.

There's so much more than what appears on the surface and what we are privy to. Who these coaches really are.

Got me thinking... We did really go THIRTEEN YEARS between Final Fours. We are in the middle of a historic run of going to a Final Four practically every year so it's hard to remember that wasn't that long ago and how ridiculous that drought was. Also makes you appreciate what we have with the Final Fours, 12 Title and winning more games than anyone since 09 despite the close lettdowns of not hanging more title banners.

I mean..Let's say one day Cal takes a NBA gig where he gets ownership shares and we land Marshall. Marshall's a fine coach and is really doing well but he's a pain in the *** dealing with off the court stuff and ONLY takes us to an Elite 8, Sweet 16 and Sweet 16 in his first 3 years. Doesn't make a Final Four in 3 years.Fans will all be in for a rude awakening since we have been essentially spoiled at least making a Final Four every year and programmed to being a legit title contender every season.

Maxx... My point was that after listening the podcast I began to wonder how many would truly want this gig that is an absolute monster and more importantly who would crush it here? There is not one clear cut choice.

Very good coaches at the time of hire have come here only to be spit up & chewed out eventually bc they can't handle everything encompassed with the program.

-If a title is the expectation this team isn't going to live up to it. They do have the potential to be fun, though. Tough living in that shadow of 2015. Chad keeps harping on it, but we've seen it recently. Ulis/Murray get hot at the right time and that can carry us a long way. Let's just have some fun with it.

-Most of the way through the year and Murray's stock has really only gotten better. Consensus top 10 with some top 5 love. Kid is just a pure scorer and he seems much more comfortable in the catch and shoot role. Should have a long career in the NBA. Just like I told my pal, geese.

-Cal's going to have to pick something soon and roll with it. We can't keep expecting Skal, Lee and Alex to turn the corner and become reliable. I'd like to see Marcus come off the bench, hell he almost has to at this point.

-Hopefully the impending thumping in Lawrence sets them on a bit of a run.

-Skal has to go. I feel bad for the dude but his stock can't get worse and he's still listed top 8 on every board. He's a Haitian refugee, so if millions are sitting there he can develop while taking care of his family. Love to have him back but I can't see it.

While Murray is indeed playing very well, he's definitely more one-dimensional than I would have thought. He's pretty much just a sniper...which is fine.

There is definitely something to Richie's season-long gripe of him not being able to really beat his man. He's really fast & athletic in transition, but not so much in the half court -- think a lot of it is his overall dribbling/movement style & posture, but he certainly seems to have trouble really getting anywhere or past his man at this point, whereas the less-athletic Briscoe can get anywhere he wants, at any time.

-Briscoe's left hand is just awesome...he LOVES doing that fake crossover move, where the ball never switches hands and stays in his left throughout the drive from the wing...keep wondering when defenders will pick up on this, or when he'll go Hawkins and break someone's ankle. He's so damn smooth with the ball, and probably the best layup finisher we've had. He finally missed one last game, and it was almost shocking.

As frustrating as it is only having one title so far, all you can ask of a CBB coach this day and age is to keep knocking on that door, and we've been in the thick of it 5/6 years.

UNC and Kansas- while I can say that yes, they have improved- were essentially the SAME teams as last year when they went out in the R32 and S16.

Dude's averaging 11ppg and costs himself another 2-3 pts at the line every game by being such a **** shooter.

Where did the not wanting Ulis back, come from?

By the way Briscoe roaming the baseline and middle of the zone at the free throw line worked very well. That was a positive and i expect us to go back to it. That and his willingness to create and break down the zone will really help us going forward, he seems to be able to hit that mid range shot on occasions.

For about an 8 minute stretch on Tuesday I saw glimpses of the light flickering and potentially how this year's team should look like on offense.

Spacing was very good, we found the soft spot in the zone, awesome interchangeable drive & kick
outs btw Ulis/Briscoe/Murray, Murray with good pace picking his spots, Ulis hitting that midrange and Briscoe getting clear drives to the basket. We got up by 20 & then reverted back to the same issues.

People ***** about Cal for his lack of in-game adjustments, but putting 6'3" Briscoe on the baseline to roam against that zone was brilliant...he was beautiful down there, and he's one of the unique guys who could pull that off at that size with his ability to finish like a big man. He admitted that he'd been using him wrong all this time, so maybe we'll see a completely different strategy going forward with him.

He had the occasional flash to the high post, where he was equally effective, but seeing him down there on the baseline finishing (or finding) time after time was just awesome.

Briscoe was great on the baseline, and I don't think he stepped out of bounds a single time.

I've grown to accept the fact that he will step out of bounds driving the baseline before making a reverse layup at least once a game.

Just as I've grown to accept the fact that Murray will simply hand the ball to the other team at least once a game.

When it happens, I just say, "OK, we got that out of the way. Now let's go!"

And sometimes they don't do it again. So you guys can thank me later.

Acknowledge I'm a homer and not saying it will happen, but I wouldn't put it past Briscoe becoming a serviceable shooter in March. Kid just has moxie and I think he's made for the big stage.

I'd say just stay away from the 3's completely. He can hit that little mid range jump shot in the soft spot of the zone, he can be crafty enough down low to make those easy layups against the zone and he can be a point guard from within the zone getting Murray, Ulis and Willis the type of feeds they need to be better 3 point shooters. Do those things and we vastly improve.

-Loved Briscoe at the 4ish baseline spot. Kind of why my thinking is run small and fast. Keep the 3 bigs out of foul trouble and rotate.

-Briscoe found his shot, it's just off the dribble. Catch and shoot, or FT's is completely different for him. His pull up jumper doesn't look bad.

-Forcing Murray to his off hand has slowed him down a lot but I don't think 1 dimensional sniper is correct. Gets bucket in transition, creates jumpers, he's just gotten much better at catch and shoot. He's also stopped forcing his drives which he should probably do a little more often. Plus zone. Briscoe can get in the middle like a mofo, though. Impressive.

Damn, just 1 damn consistent big. All we need. Don't even need that much out of him.

Uthoff needs some 2nd team AA love...he's a stud, and has been for a few years now. Every time I watch him he goes off.
