Re: Kansas, I finally pulled the trigger and booked a ticket to KC on Friday night about 10pm for a flight departing at 5:30am the next morning.
Allen Field House was really impressive from an atmosphere standpoint, it just oozes college basketball. It has an old school "Hoosiers" feel, and obviously gets incredibly loud. Basically, if UK had elected to double the size of Memorial Coliseum in the 70s and stay there, that's pretty much what KU has.
Despite their well-documented hatred for UK and all things Cal, no problems whatsoever with any KU fans. The rednecks in Bloomington could learn a thing or two about being loud/passionate/energetic without being vile ********. Though I'll add they weren't as basketball savvy as I would have expected. I understand having a little bias, but I was dumbfounded they were complaining about the officiating in the second half.
Still can't get over their embracing the Helms "titles" from 1922 and 23. I've seen the banners in the endzone before on television so I knew they recognized them, but they're all-in on the delusion. Billboards heading into town talk about their 5 National Championships and they have plaques behind glass in their Hall of Fame (adjacent to the arena) for both years.
The rest of KU's campus is very meh though. I know there's not a lot to work with in the midwest, but for comparison's sake, Mizzou's campus in Columbia is leap year's ahead of Lawrence.
As far as the game, it's been rehashed enough. We blew a huge opportunity. On Saturday morning anyone of us would've taken that scenario, tied game with possession and last shot to win. That being said, I was at the UNC game in Chapel Hill in 2010, and that was the parallel that came to mind as things slipped away in OT. Neutral court with straight up officiating, I like our chances. And I wouldn't have said that 12 days ago.
