Yesterday's thread got me to thinking. If Haley Barbour were to run for president in '12 or '16 and actually win, what would that mean for MSU? Would UM getting a presidential library (I'm not certain how this works) and whatever else comes along with being the alma mater of the President put them a step above MSU? I imagine it would benefit all of the state's colleges and universities but more so UM. Or would it have little to no effect on either school?

MSU already has the Grant papers, which falls under the presidential library administration, there is no requirement that the library be placed at the president's alma mater. Slick Willy's is at UALR and Bush I is at A&M. W is putting his at SMU.

Possession of Grant's papers doesn't necessarily mean that MSU is a presidential library since his presidency preceded the formation of presidential libraries. MSU's collection though is one of two presidential collections in the state-- if you count Jefferson Davis as being first.

this is something we need to be concerned with. There is little chance a Republican from Mississippi can win a presidential election.

Barbour's best chance will be in 2016. Elected incumbents-- Jimmy Carter being an exception-- generally do not lose re-election bids.

I think his heavy accent and the fact that he graduated from a public university in Mississippi are more than enough reasons why the ill-informed American public won't vote for him. The media would have a field day. Just a hypothetical situation.

but I also agree. The media elites will ridicule him because of his roots and his accent and the dumbass electorate will not pay attention to what he's saying, only how he says it.

In befo da lock.

I was trying to keep this from being politcal and more about MSU and how something like an OM grad becoming president would effect us as a university (which I guess is political, but still MSU related). Seems like some got hung up on the presidential library part though. Oh well, lock if you must.

lifetime.......MS has a bad reputation nationally and the liberal media would take full advantage of that........He has about as good a chane to be president as we do of winning a National Championship in football......Now, he might end up as someone's v.p. running mate but as for Prez it's out of the question, so just drop it.......

All the democrats have to do is pay ABC, NBC, CBS to play a few of the movies they've made portraying what Hollywood thinks of Mississippi and he loses. I wouldnt even run him

would create a large gap between our two schools on its own. it would be a good thing for um, though, especially in light of the debate and um's effort to be the harvard of the south or the virginia of oxford or the cambridge of oxford or whatever. perhaps the MIT of miss-sip-py?

HB has more then a chance of being president then you think. After what this jackass and this congress is going to do to our country, we the people are going to be looking for a full swing of the pendulum. Mok ma wuds!

I think Barbour is the GOP's current best shot. He's been RNC chair, strategized for Reagan, and has gotten good marks as Governor.

Before da lock?

he never got a bachelor's degree. He does have a JD though. I guess back then, a bachelor's degree wasn't a prerequisite to get into law school.
He attended the University of Mississippi in Oxford, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, but skipped the first semester of his senior year to work on Richard Nixon's 1968 election campaign. He never earned a bachelor's degree.

all the people that will come out of the woodwork with stories about the time Haley said this or that back in the 70s and 80s? Pictures of Haley at CCC BBQs will be everywhere.

Remember Charles Pickering? It didn't matter that he fought for racial equality. He was branded a rascist just for being a white Mississippian. The same thing will happen to Haley, should he make a serious run.

However, the GOP nomination tends to go to the senior-most elected leader-- and given that, the current shortlist for prime presidential candidates consists of two people: Haley Barbour and Mitt Romney. The Southerner and the Scientologist Mormon.1 I didn't vote for Barbour in 2003, but he did a fantastic job in his first term and deserved re-election two years ago, so I voted for him.

_________
1Chris Petersen's not running, is he?

is my darkhorse. He's popular with Fla's hispanics, which could translate nationally.

He's more media savy than his brother and much more polished. In 3 years, or 7, people longing for the good ole days before the economies downturn might get sentimental and vote in another Bush, especially if Obama is succesful in raising the price of electricity 50% and destroying health care in this country.

that said when ol' Haley was running for senator, one of his advisors said something to the affect of there would be a lot of (insert deragortory term for African Americans here) at a particular event. Haley scolded the advisor by telling him that if he did not stop being a racist he would be reincarnated as a watermelon in the Delta - right in front of reporters.

That is why he won't be elected. Can you imagine a Republican from Mississippi running against an Kenyan-born Muslim?

Not after the debacle that was George W. Bush.

Obama getting elected was more of an anti Bush election, than a pro Obama.

If the Republicans run an old white man against Obama, they will lose as well.
