I thought it was Oliver Luck who got WVU into the Big 12.

Thanks to a poster educating me I found out it was Don Nehlen. Oh, I didn't take the poster's word for it. As always I did my own research.

Bob Hertzel column explained it:

How Nehlen got WVU into the Big 12 because he had a long and friendly history with interim Big 12 commissioner Chuck Neinas. So AD Oliver Luck and WVU president Jim Clements asked Don to go to bat for the blue and gold. He did. That opened the door for the Mountaineers to join the Big 12 and escape the downgrade that hit so many former Big East teams.

I suspect Oliver's Texas connections helped him know that Neinas and Don were College Football Association higher-ups who worked together for years. So I give Oliver second banana credit but Don top dog hosannahs!

If you want to read the story by Bob Hertzel, which I had never seen, go to

Nehlen played vital role in getting WVU to the Big 12 | College Sports | register-herald.com (register-herald.com)

And my thanks to the poster who set me straight. Never too old to learn.

There was no one person that led WVU to be taken into the Big 12. Nehlen helped a little, and Clements and Luck a lot. But at the end of the day, it was WVU's success in sports more than any one person.

Classic example of how this site has been hijacked by trolls and turned to ****. Zero content. Say what you want about my opinion about Hicktown, USA Big12 but the discussion, besides of course the homers, is centered around the health of WVU. I’ve said many times the Big12 was huge for the survival of WVU athletics. That doesn’t mean it is good for WVU. The conversation is spirited but relevant. The trolls and losers like @Cuyahoga Falls Eers, @Buckaineer, scum @TownesVanZandt and angry fella @WVUFanForever, just to name a few, have ruined this place. Every time @WVUALLEN takes a break no good content appears. When the great @MichiganHerd and I takes some time off traffic goes down the drain. When @KingCoal @Rootmaster get busy and aren’t around there’s nobody that can confront and control the troll geeks. So we get stuck having to fight the good fight to save this place and help Veron have a relevant site. So sad.

You are wasting your time Greggy.

When you get a little pressure on your little mind you crack.

Both the ACC and Big 12 are sinking ships.

But if WVU was already in the ACC the chance of them being in a super conference version of the ACC would be very low

UNC has value but doesn't want to deal with the trash in the SEC.
So UNC is looking at their options.

Texas is #1 on that list.
So Texas can therefore help WVU gain a seat in that conference.

Not an argument.
Just information. Either you accept it or not.
Doesn't matter to me.

Hickstown USA cares about College sports.
People in places like Boston and NY do not.
So huge states like Ohio, Texas, Georgia and Florida are valuable.
Especially when you compare them to places where professional sports are popular.

Greggy you should know this
Compare State College, PA to Pittsburgh.

Nothing to do there. Middle of nowhere. But they show up 105K to football games.

Pitt barely can get 15K

Just a month ago you were claiming USC was coming to the Big 12. The PAC 12 was folding.

Texas will never be invited to SEC.

Greg Byrne is a very possible candidate for Pac 12 commissioner...
The Alabama AD is very close to the Texas AD.
They worked together for awhile at Arizona.

One of the main reasons why he is a preferred Candidate

There ya go again misrepresenting other peoples posts goofball. I never said one time people in Hicktown, USA didn’t care about their teams. Not once. Of course WV loves their WVU football, as they should. What else do they have in State College, PA besides 7 games a year. My point was, now hold your breath dumb ***, very few people in Boston, NY or Pittsburgh gives a rats *** about what happens on college campuses in Hicktown, USA. You literally just proved my point 😂. “Nothing to do there. Middle of no where(ie Hicktown, USA)” 😂. i.e. No one cares so Big 12 has very little National interest across most of the country. Arguing otherwise is a waste of time. Here’s the kicker.........you’ll move the goal posts from the latest *** whipping I put on you and start another argument with yourself about stuff no one is talkin about. I’m just here to pull the strings. And of course make Greg laugh at you.

Oh BTW lets put some facts to your BS. @TownesVanZandt claim “Pitt barely can get 15k”. <<<<<Texass fuzzy claim

Fact>>>>>1973 to 1999 at Pitt Stadium home attendance was 40,902 in 158 games.
Fact>>>>>1999 at Three Rivers Stadium home attendance was 40,866 in 6 games.
Fact>>>>>2001 to 2017 at Heinz Field home attendance was 46,298 in 104 games.
Fact>>>>>2018 home attendance was 44,398.
Fact>>>>>2019 home attendance was 42,056.

Hey I just googled those numbers. Kinda cool and I likie.

Irrelevant if that attendance is pathetic or great. What’s relevant is I prove once again you are full of ****(well google proved it) 😂.

You just had an @Cuyahoga Falls Eers moment with unprofessional claims posing as fact. I just tugged your strings little bruh. Now take off, google and start arguing with yourself.

How many times we have to tell you Greg that yellow seats can not be counted as people. Those large crowds were probably WVU, PSU, ND fans.

I forgot about that one Allen. @TownesVanZandt your sources still thinkin USC is Big12 bound or you just gonna act like you never posted that garbage here. Time for you to ignore, exit stage left and start an argument with yourself about absolutely nothing to do with Allen’s point. Which BTW his point is you’re an idiot.

Disagree.
Big East proved that.

National interest isn't in the Northeast.
It is in what you refer to Hickstown
Those are the people who watch the games

I said if USC can get a third rights deal from their conference it allows Texas to have their LHN in the PAC 12.

What they wanted in the beginning.

But we have no idea what is going on in that conference.
But teams are using the Big 12 as leverage

Well, if you leave, take your three dozen alter egos with you.

Solves all the problems.
The problem on this message board is that people cannot support WVU

They are attacked. Called homers.

The site allows it to happen so people pay to post on the Blue lot

IMO you are bad for business. Why will people want to support WVU when they come here and read about how the Big 12 sucks,, Neal Brown can't coach and Huggins should retire.

Wait I’m confused. You’re a Texas fanboy. Why the 24/7 interest in WVU? Don’t answer that goofball.

People in NY and Boston don't care about any of us. Regardless of location....

Slow thinking. If people in Pittsburgh want to feel like they belong. That is their right.

Weird thinking because it doesn't help Pitt Football out at all.

My sources tell me it was a tough call between Rutgers/Maryland and Texas Tech and Kansas St for those last two Big Ten spots. Dude your narrative is stupid but carry on. Please!

What does the Big Ten have to do with anything
Pitt isn't getting in there and neither is WVU

Did you already abandon Pitt. Are you a Big Ten fan now?

You keep talking about National Interest and saying Hickstown, USA

That is where the National Interest comes from. Doesn't come from major cities. For the most part people there don't watch CFB.

Makes you sound like a dumbass.

Hey townes, you keep calling me bad for business, but can you link to the threads where I'm discussing the WVU coaches and the conference sucking? Granted, there's probably threads where I've had to defend the honor of another conference and/or another coach within another conference, but I can't recall discussing in this forum, Neal Brown's coaching ability, nor the prospects of Huggins retiring.

Perhaps you're bad for business?????

Not going to continue to argue stupidity.

This message board is the way it is because we have people who take offense to anything positive about WVU.

You are included.

I would argue the message board is the way it is because we have people (you and three dozen alters) who use this forum as their personal safe place to type out their own nutty manifesto.

Let's face it. Forum is kind of weird at 3:00 a.m., when it only consist of a make believe fan of Texas posting to himself. That's a program 1,400 miles away from Morgantown, WV. Strange behavior to say the least, and then you bring in all the alter egos, and it's almost worthy of a Netflix documentary on nutcases.

WVU did not get an invite 70 years ago when the ACC started when WVU was part of the old Southern Conference. It did not happen when GA Tech jumped from the SEC to the ACC. It did not happen when Fast Eddie waved bye bye to BC, VPLies, and Cryami. It did not happen when sPitt and Suckacuse bolted and Rutgers jumped with both feet to the B1G. Did not happen when Maryland jumped to the B1G. WVU is in the only Conference that was willing to take us. The SEC and B1G are not going to happen and the ACC will NEVER happen. If Ollie did what Fast Eddie did, WVU would be in the same boat as Marshall collecting $200K conference checks for football per year and state taxpayer picking up 45% of the athletic department budget.
