You mean final end-of-season record, right?

I think we determined before that Blacksburg and one team in the past had gone on to win state in the playoff era, following 5-5 regular seasons. Unless I'm badly mistaken, I think the state champions in the pre-playoff era were almost always determined by whomever finished undefeated in the regular season. If there were more than one, I think the teams may have, on rare occasion, met in a de facto championship game. Not sure on all that. But I feel certain that no team that won state prior to 1970 (or '71?) would ever have been close to having a losing record.

Both Jonesville '88 and Appalachia '89 won Division 1 following 5-5 regular seasons, in addition to last year's B'burg squad. Both of those two finished 9-5.

The only state champion that ended the season without an overall winning record was EC Glass in 1933.
They finished their season at 4-4.

It was one hell of a good game. I was there. Eric Hunter was QB'ing for the Crabbers, I feel like he was probably the best pure QB that Hampton has ever had. He had a canon for an arm. Went on to Purdue on a full ride. On a very sad note, he was just murdered in Hampton a couple weeks ago. He was one hell of a good QB though.

Muddy field was an understatement. Todd Stadium was a wreck. Pigs wouldn't have wallowed in that field...LOL
