Dang Spartan, you're good! Much respect man!!Both Jonesville '88 and Appalachia '89 won Division 1 following 5-5 regular seasons, in addition to last year's B'burg squad. Both of those two finished 9-5.

The only state champion that ended the season without an overall winning record was EC Glass in 1933.
They finished their season at 4-4.
VHSL Reference, see Site Map. No information on how.Where'd you find that info, and how was it determined back then that Glass was state champion?
Spotsy in the middle 90's was either 5-5 or 6-4 and went on to win the state title over Amherst.
I think we are going to have to go to Dr Danny for the answer to this one. It makes no sense, because all other divisions that year played 14 games. And the same for 87 and 88. It must be a mis-print.How did Hampton win a state championship in 1988 by only playing 9 games?
It must have just been a misprint. I found that Hampton beat Robinson for the championship in 88 and finished 12-1.I think we are going to have to go to Dr Danny for the answer to this one. It was one hell of a good game. I was there. Eric Hunter was QB'ing for the Crabbers, I feel like he was probably the best pure QB that Hampton has ever had. He had a canon for an arm. Went on to Purdue on a full ride. On a very sad note, he was just murdered in Hampton a couple weeks ago. He was one hell of a good QB though.https://www.washingtonpost.com/arch...84a-8879-74f7240fd0d1/?utm_term=.49499a4744a8
Sounded like a heck of a game!
That game was played on a very sloppy field, I was there it was miserable to say the least1994 was the year Spotsylvania beat what was probably a heavily-favored Amherst County team in the Division 4 final.
I had seen the sad news on this young man. I had not made the connection to this game.
Simple - they didn't. Obviously missing some games. How did Hampton win a state championship in 1988 by only playing 9 games?
