has the Zone Read Option disappeared from the MSU offense?

I realize Tyler is not built to run the Zone Read Option like Ralph/Relf and now we have to air-it out more, but it seems Mullen has abandoned using Dak in the Zone Read Option especially in short yardage situations? For the past 3 years, this has been the staple of our offense to get 3-6 yards on this play. Is it just me or is there a reason Mullen/coaching staff have not used Dak more to get our running game more efficient? Flame away...

Maybe someone else can add to this
But teams know Dak will run when we put him in on short yardage situations in the redzone.

What if we put him in on first down and ran that zone read option
Obviously he could run, but the defense has to respect that so then if they take him out you get an easy handoff to The rb

Tyler still runs a few zone read plays per game.

Dak is being used just like Mullen's other #15 when he was getting broken in. I think 15 is learning to read DL and LBs right now.

We're not going to see much zone-read the next couple of years. It just doesn't play to Russell's strengths. He can run it a few times a game and be effective, but not many. Also, we desperately need to protect Russell this year. If he goes down, we're screwed. Prescott could run the zone-read all day long, but if he's in the game defenses are going to put 9 in the box and dare us to pass. And they will shut us down completely.

Sure Prescott might struggle against a good d in the passing game at this point, but that largely due to inexperience. He's only shown his arm a few plays against USA and he didn't look all that bad to me. It's obvious the plan is to bring him along slowly with passing situations only in mop up time if the situation warrants. I like the plan.

Sooner or later he's going to do a dump pass across the middle in one of these goal line situations to keep the ds honest, but to this point he's been good on the keeper.

He's struggled agains the bad defenses so far. His passer rating is 85, and that's against Jackson St. and South Alabama. He missed a wide open receiver by 10 yards on a 25-yard pass against Jackson St. If he has to play against any SEC defense right now, they will eat him alive. I still think he has a chance to be a good QB for us, but he's 2 years away.

How many passes has he thrown? I'd be surprised if its over 8. I thought he zipped a beaut against USA that Lewis dropped that would have been good for 20 it seemed.

Hey, he may suck in time but I didn't think he looked Relfish.

He's only thrown 6 passes. There's a reason he hasn't thrown more. And it's not because he's a good passer, or even adequate, right now.

Dak's problem in the passing game right now is 1) he still gets fooled too often (that should come with time) and 2) he's not repeating his good throwing motion every time yet. He'll be fine in the long run, we just have to be patient.

I agree completely. Which is why I said he could be a good QB for us, but he's 2 years away. He's Chris Relf II. And if we'd had to play Relf at QB in his redshirt freshman season, it would have been a disaster.

Dak's 3X better than Relf was as a R-Fr...he threw some very good passes vs USA

If Dak took over tomorrow we'd still go 8-4

Get the **** out of here

What? We'd still beat Kentucky, Mid-Tenn, a trainwreck called UPig, and Mississippi

I dont know that Dak could beat Tenn or A&M, but who knows. We beat people with Relf we didnt think we'd beat. WE would go back to last year's offense, and Dak would end up making more throws than Relf did. The only question would be his durability

I remember watching the 2009 Georgia Tech game in a New York City GT alumni bar, and some douche next to me said something like "nice, way to steal our plays"...

Well Georgia Tech was good that year, but that same offense is garbage now. With an offensive line made almost entirely of NFL second-stringers and a 6-4 running back lining up at QB who's built like a Mac truck... The read option is nearly unstoppable, even in the SECW climate, but it's a fad only suitable in a perfect storm, a la Sherrod & Ralph.

Well, according to you, Dak was as good of a passer as Russell last year. So you'll just have to understand that I'm going to take everything you say about him with a grain of salt. I've seen him play and from the way he looked against bad competition, he doesn't look like he's anywhere near ready to play in the SEC. Mullen obviously feels the same way since he didn't let him attempt even 1 pass against either Auburn or Troy.
