Or maybe he’s adopted the Lou Holtz approach while at ND. “We’re small and slow, we can’t block, tackle, throw or catch”. Or maybe there is something to be nervous about. Next month the truth will out.

This happens most years. Early in camp, coaches tend to be unsatisfied sounding, negative, talking about how stuff needs a lot of work. Towards end of camp, coaches tend to be much more positive, while saying still more work to be done before the first game.

I read absolutely nothing into anything they say. They gotta say something. 100% of coaches wish they could just skip the press conferences except after big games they‘ve won (and often even then).

I'll play the eternal optimist, no turnovers, Woo Hoo we're on our way. However, I'll be pleasantly surprised if we can field a functional offense against a bad Northwestern defense. Our offense will be mainly sipping Mai Tai's and Pina Coladas on the sidelines.

Mai tais and pina coladas. Yum.

If they’re serving those, I might have to storm the field.

How many delay of game penalties?

We were the second most Penalized team in the B1G last season.
If this undisciplined play and mental blunders happens again this season no chance at 6 wins. Period.
At this point there is no excuse for all the dumb pre snap penalties. Not too many offenses are going to have any success when they're starting first or second and 15. I thing those things went down last year after Gleeson left but the penalty issue falls squarely on Greg's shoulders.

I'll play the flip side. Our defense is overrated and is going to get shredded.

He was either pissed off about the Scrimmage result or exhausted or a little bit of both. Certainly not happy with either the offense or defense

Most concerning were comments about Wimsatt. And the focus on how they didn’t turn the ball over as a major positive takeaway.

I agree with you on not taking it as a negative. We have witnessed Greg hundreds of times where he never says very much either good or bad. He should expect more and perhaps just maybe it signals to the team this year has to be different in terms of success and nothing is easy.

Certainly a different tone from Greg than we’ve heard from the prior three seasons. I like the higher expectations and sense of urgency.

1) The roster is now almost fully his heading into year 4.

2) The QB is his and is going into his 3rd season (2nd full season) with the program. It’s fair to have raised expectations although only in his 1st season as the full time starter. I think RU fans sometimes forget how most other programs have more than one QB who can play and many times at a moments notice who can step in.

3) This is the fourth season of improving the OL. First season it was what it was, last two seasons could’ve certainly been better, this season it’s absolutely reasonable to expect more.

4) The coaching staff is veteran. OC, OL, etc.

Greg knows another 4-8 season will be a disappointment and 5-7 has to look really good to be accepted. It’s 6-6 or bust time and we’re three weeks away from getting going.

100%

This is Greg's team. He can't attribute lack of success this year to the previous regime. I think I remember him saying that this team reminds him of 2005. He's going to have to prove it on the field. It seems his expectations for this team is much higher than years past.

This is nothing earth shattering but when comparing to 2005 - that team got to 7 wins by beating Villanova, Buffalo, Syracuse, Uconn, Cincy (who was awful then), Pitt, and Navy.

Seemed so disappointed. I think he expects way more out of this team than previous years.

My takeaway from it is that Gavin must have truly looked better at practices. Schiano saw him revert back to last year’s inconsistency in the scrimmage and that was very concerning. Some kids have trouble putting it together for game day. I’m sure Greg walked away concerned about that with GW. How could he not?
