I know I'm preaching to the choir here with this argument but a conversation with a co-worker this morning got me to thinking. Below are the stats of two linebackers, one of which is a finalist for the Heisman trophy. Te'o's numbers are the second one listed. I'll let you all guess who the other one is.

Total Tackles TFL Sacks Int Fumbles Rec Forced Fumbles PBU Pass Def
110 10.0 4 2 2 2 4 6

103 5.5 1.5 7 2 0 4 11

The only noticeable advantage that Te'o has is in the interception category. Seven picks for a linebacker is pretty impressive but not heisman worthy.
I understand that Notre Dame is undefeated which adds to the significance of his numbers but I'm fairly certain that you could find someone on Bama's defense with similar numbers as well. The vote shouldn't even be close, Manziel is the best player in college football but I could also see the argument for Klein at KSU.

Oh and that other linebacker is Cam Lawrence, his are the top numbers. Fire away.

Hell, Nkemdiche has more TFL, forced fumbles, etc. Stats aren't everything, but this year no one really stepped up and just owned the trophy. I guess Manziel will get it, but the freshman barrier is tough, and most people nationwide never saw him before the Bama game.

I completely agree with you

Teo is good, and will make a good NFL linebacker, but I see no reason he should even be considered for the Heisman Trophy. He is in New York for 2 reasons:

1. He plays for ND

2. The story regarding his GF and Grandmother passing away in the same day

Its a heartbreaking story, but I dont think it should qualify you for being named the best college football player in the country. I heard an analyst making a case for him for the Heisman and saying things like (paraphrasing) " He is the emotional and spiritual leader of undefeated ND, and Heisman should be about more than stats. It should also be about character"

Well I couldn't disagree more with this statement. If this were truly the case Tim Tebow should have won it 3 straight years, and guys like Cam Newton should have never been considered.

Teo can eat a dick. It's sad what happened to his family, but when has has an emotional struggle made mediocre stats Heisman worthy? That LB from BC who beat cancer and went on to the NFL didn't get as much recognition as something that didn't even happen TO Teo is getting. The difference is one went to lowly BC and the other goes to ND.

And this is the best year ND has had in 30 years so OF COURSE there has to be one player from the team getting a Heisman bump. Everyone else on that team is mediocre, so lets hype the emotionally scarred LB that somehow has above average INT's.

Good job, America.

the biggest problem I see with the award is it has turned into the MVP award for the #1 team. I lost all faith in the voters when Ingram won it. He wasn't even the best back in the SEC West.
