Here is the original Ole Miss Mascot. Why not vote for him?

They had Col Reb and looked for a black guy who he resembled so they could play that (anti) race card.

Most schools have an animal as a mascot. Bulldog, Tiger, Golden Eagle and so forth. It's interesting that umiss would put ... a Black man ... in the same position.

Try again.

Revisionist history is not working for them today.

It's called propaganda. Like "Blind Jim" is the only southern male prototype that has a hat, gray hair, and a goatee. Blind Jim died in 1955, and the National Guard had not yet been needed to get the first black man admitted to Ole Miss.

What about this quote: "<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 8px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 8px; ">USM went from Southerners to Golden Eagles in 1972 and did away with a mascot called General Nat, named for Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest, founder of the Ku Klux Klan."</span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 8px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 8px; ">
</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 8px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 8px; ">Now, that is bizarre.</span></div>

There is exactly one source that makes the claim that Col Reb was based on that man. Many people believe this story. Many take it as historical fact. Many behave as if multiple sources all make the same claim. But there's only one source, while all such other "sources" merely make reference to the original source.

What is Sansing's source? Its merely a picture of a man that resembles Col Reb. He says its true because he wants it to be true. But Jim Ivy as Col Reb is every bit as true and accurate as 13 national championships at Alabama. One guy puts it in print and everybody who wants to believe its, believes it.

The only reason MSU didn't have rioting is because they were not the first major public university in the state to be integrated.

That part of our history is embarassing, but to pretend it would've been any different if Meredith had enrolled at MSU in 1962 is just sticking your head in the sand.

Either way, that show was absolutely golden.
Game...blouses is my favorite line form a Chapelle Show, but th epoint of Clayton Bigsby is that it look slike Chapelle based that skit onBlind Jim Ivy.

It's comical how some people act so proud of this "fact" though. Even if it were true, they still copied all of the guy's features EXCEPT HIS SKIN COLOR.

Read pages 275-276.

While Sansing doesn't outright state that Ivy was the model for Colonel Rebel, there appears to be enough anecdotal evidence for him to use the phrase "may have been the model..."

for the athletics or academics for Meridith.

Look. Nobody with any sense of history, let alone who lived it or knows someone who did contends that MSU was not filled with it's share of bigots in the early 1960's.

But Meridith picked UM because it represented then, in almost every sense of the word, the old white south better than any other university. Meridith attending MSU wouldnt have sent the message that was intended nearly as effectively.

His bravery was not that he picked any school in the south as ALL predominantly white universities would have reacted similarly. It's that he picked the one that EXEMPLIFIED it the most.

The problem that Ole Miss has now is that itstill clingsto those symbols. THat very action is what indicates it wont let go of the sentiment.

Even your avatar, whether you hold those ideals or not, depicts it.

None of those are meant to disparage or demean a group of people.

Just ... umiss.

How very interesting.

Oh, and yes, fighting, drunken Irish and Indian mascots have been called demeaning many times. UNLV's mascot looks almost identical to Colonel Reb, so who is he demeaning?

tar heels have a ram, the Vols have Smokey. You can name any animal Rebel and you're done. What does a tree have to do with the Cardinal?

If it were up to me I'd just go with a bear and move on. Only because there are no bears mascots in the SEC, and MS does have them, the teddy bear, all that crap. And I would totally steal the hockey logo I first saw on Sixpack, cause all the fratdaddies could still wear their Jack Nicklaus visors:

Because you asked - Standford has been the cardinal for a long time. Eventually, they wanted a mascot, so they came up with a tree because they are all tree-huggers. Seriously. I'm not making this up....its because they are tree-huggers.

So wouldn't it be cool **** if the Mississippi Rebels had this for a mascot, because its is representative of what you guys like to hug...

Seriously...don't go dual mascot like Tiger-War Eagle-Plainsmen or Crimson Tide - Elephant. That's just stupid. That other schools do it doesn't make it right.

South the nickname of "Rebels" will always be associated with one thing even if you change the mascot.........None of thoseexamples you gave areeven close to resembling the UM situation.......Most Ole Miss fans I know NEVER want Col. Reb to die and honestly, I don't blame them......It's part of the schools history.....It is what it is......I do think it will change in due time.......

do you mean 38 years? Because that's how long they have been the Cardinal, before that, they were the Indians.
