Whoever we hire, the need to retain one or two of Croom's assistants for the recruiting purposes for this year atleast and I personally wouldn't mind if we kept cheese on the staff. But whoever we bring in they need to establish over 320 yards per game atleast next year. The past five years have been ********.

I think one of the main purposes of Byrne taking that NCAA test was so that he wouldn't have to retain parts of the previous coaching staff and could communicate to recruits.

That said, if anyone stays it will probably be Felker. He's a sheep cult hero.

...but he's open to hiring strong offensive assistants and letting them run the show, which he's obviously done at Tulsa. He's a keeper, as far as I'm concerned.

He was the DC at Rice before he became the head coach there, and was Co-DC at West Virginia before that. He has always coached defense.

His offensive coordinator is Gus Malzahn. He invented the Wildcat offense. He was Mitch Mustian's high school coach and went to Arkansas with him. We all know the drama that went on with Nutt and Mustain while he was there, and he left Arkansas joined Graham at Tulsa in 2007.

This is " The Big Time Hire " ? When I hear" Money is No Object "and we settle for a guy with no Pelts on the wall / That is a little deflating..( we better not offer 1 Mil. to this un proven spare tire )

I would think 3 or 4 people would have to turn it down first. I am still hearing that we are still kinda after Petersen. If it's true Patterson put in for it last time, you would think he would be a great candidate. Petersen, Kelly, or Patterson and I am thrilled with the hire.

I'm not a big fan of Graham unless he brings Malzahn or Applewhite with him to run the offense. While he's a defensive minded coach, his defenses where he's been lately aren't anything to write home about. And before you use the "it's Rice or WV or CUSA" excuse - remember we're looking for a coach that does more with less and will typically be the case with MSU on on overall talent.

It's his offenses that have won games for him the last few years.

Shirley you jest. He's taken two division 1 programs to bowls. One of them, by the way, had not been to a bowl in almost 50 years.

He makes 1.2 million now, so if he comes, he will get some coin. And we would be lucky to have him, in my opinion. On my list it's Graham and Gary Patterson, and then everybody else. Kelly and Petersen aren't coming so everyone can get over that.

....but I know you and DJ Looney were sitting on the same side of the booth feeding each other Chik-Fil-A nuggets at the Union the other day.

"Gimme some more insider info, DJ. Pleeeeease."
"Pop another nugget in my mouth, bonedaddy401. Dipped twice in ranch and once in polynesian."
"Ok, Deej, whatever you say."

not impressed with this rumor. I was expecting the "shock and awe" hire.

But who knows, this could be a smoke-screen rumor.

I feel the same way. Graham has won at both of his stops so far but he yet to field a decent defense and I don't think Tulsa's version of the spread will work in the SEC. If we are trying to make a big-time hire I don't think he is the guy we need. I'm think Dooley might be better suited for the SEC than Graham is although I don't want him either.

I'm not sure who you are expecting, but this would be a hell of a hire

to the C-USA Championship Game two years in a row. And he won at Rice.

Let's compare him to Derek Dooley.

Graham has been a HC for three years, and Dooley two, so that's why I'm comparing the two, plus the amount of talk given both here and on other MSU boards. Both coach in similar conferences- C-USA for Graham and WAC for Dooley.

OK, Dooley as a HC/AD has gone 12-12 in two years at La Tech, including one losing season at 5-7, and his team is on the bowl bubble. He took over a 3-10 team.

Now Todd Graham took over a 1-10 Rice program and won 7 games the nest year- many of the losses to people like Texas, UCLA, Florida State, and took them to their first bowl since 1961. That was in his first year as a HC and his only year at Rice. He then takes over an 8-5 Tulsa team and then wins 10 games the next year and takes them to the C-USA Championship Game. Now, he has them back in the C-USA Championship Game with another 10 win season, and I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in Memphis this year. THIS is the kind of up and coming coach we need. He has proven that he can win with nothing, and that's pretty close to what we have on offense.

I think he can win 6-7 next year for us next year, and then we'll see what he can do.

The guy has never had a losing season as a head coach. That would change the first season at MSU.

Apparently he won't win over the fans with his personality. He also will jump at the next opportunity if it arises. If he wins at State, he won't be there for more than a couple of years and then jump ship. If you can handle those attributes, he would be a quality pick up for State. I would rather have someone with a little more commitment to a program and succeed for the long haul.

the year he was there. They were 1-11 the year before. I don't think Malzhan has made him.

like a Patterson, Petersen, Leach, or Leavitt.

Whoever we hire, I have a high degree of confidence that Byrne will not allow the coach to be on a 5 year welfare plan like we had with Crooms.

however, his only redeemable quality at this point appears to be that he is a winner.

Of course, that is what we are looking for...but if that is all we are looking for...why not just hire Bowden? He is a known commodity.

Now Graham has a decent enough sample to see that it is probably more than just dumb luck, but the fact that he is a defensive coach and his defense sucks gives me pause. Sounds like our recent offensive coach whose offense sucked.

OF COURSE we need a proven winner, however, I have to think we need a little bit more than that at this point. We need a winner AND an offensive/defensive genius or recruiting specialist. What is this guy's recruiting reputation?
