Here's a cheery thought re: our baseball team

Per Boyd's RPI Needs Report, we have the 2nd toughest remaining schedule in the country in terms of remaining opponents' winning percentage. But on the positive side, we theoretically only need to go 8-7 to sneak into an NCAA bid.

Boyd has been consistent that we needed to go 28-27 to "potentially" make the NCAA's. I am having a hard time finding 8 wins on our remaining schedule. Also, are we making up that game vs MVSU? That would help us in the win column.

in order to get to 28 wins. And that assumes we sweep MTSU, beat Memphis and win one in each of the last 4 series. That's an awful big task for this bunch we have now.

These would be 2 good games to win. We need to win both midweek games this week, and steal one in Nashville and I'll feel better about our chances. I think we'll need to get one in Oxford and win the Bama series to make it, assuming we don't get swept. Its a long shot at best.

Middle Tennessee really is better than MSU. That doesn't always mean anything, but I would be really surprised if State sweeps and honestly a split would be pretty good this season. Bryce is a freak, hitting like .466 with 19 HRs. They have several strong bats in their lineup.

The good thing is, MT is only a 1/2 game up in their conference race and they started saving all their best pitching (starters and most of the relief) for conference games and that has hurt them mid-week recently. MT doesn't have much depth, so if State can get ANY pitching they may very well take these two games.

This series comes down to quality of midweek pitching or lack thereof.

Kool-Aid right over! I can't see us having a winning record and I don't see us making the Ncaa tourney. Please tell me I have been watching the wrong team play and we really belong in the tourney?
No pitching = no winning season. Man I hate I typed that!</p>

We have a "good team" and a horrible bullpen. Our team can hit at an acceptable rate, we have some power, we have some guys that can steal some bases like Hogue. Heck, we even have a legit ace in Nick Routt, and Whitney is a decent starting pitcher. BUT our bullpen is absolutely atrocious. Cohen has said it best- They try hard, but they just don't have it. There's nothing we can do except wait the season out, and then start cutting the dead weight.

The real shame here to me is that we have a team that other than the bullpen should be a lock for no worse than a three seed, and probably a two seed in a regional. Instead, we're probably going to have a losing record because we can't get anyone out when someone not named Routt or Whitney are pitching.

I feel bad for Cohen to. He has done about all he can to win, and all he has gotten back is a bunch of morons filling up his inbox bitching. He throws everyone in the bullpen and when they blow a 8-2 lead- and I realize that it was 8-5 when Moore left, but I don't think he would have been left in had we not been avoiding our bullpen in the first place, and then he says that they aren't any good, and people *****. So, he throws a starter for 140 pitches again, primarily because the bullpen sucks, and people ***** because he "is abusing pitchers". What do you do? I guess you start pitching right fielders.

For instance...

Ole Miss football in '07 = suck

Add in a key component like a QB in '08 = not suck

You may as well say that a football team is good other than their OL that sucked balls, so they couldn't protect the passer or establish a running game. But other than that, they were badass.

If your bullpen sucks, and that's the reason you lose games all the time, then you suck. Period.

I was simply stating a fact that according to Boyd, IF we went 8-7, we might sneak into a regional. I personally think this team will do good to do better than 5-10 the rest of the way.

I also realize on "paper" we have a chance to make the Ncaa tourney. But as much baseball I have seen over the many years at Msu, I KNOW its by for the least talented team ever. I'm just sick about the situation our program has taken, I like many, am just disgusted the way not only the way he left the program in, but how he handled his retirement! I have always stated he was our all-time best or greatest coach, I know longer believe that nor do I think I can ever get over his tantrum and his thinking "I'm bigger than the University".
I saw some of the game last night but I just can't stomach what I am seeing. There is no way we can break even for the season much less make the tourney. Fact is we can't win more than two games in a row and I doubt we will win two in a row the rest of the season. I know Cohen has the players playing hard but I also think they have thrown in the towel and I believe "most" realize they want be back next year. I also believe a few of the players who we think may be back want be either by choice or Cohen pushing them away.
I can't wait till baseball season starts next year!

Your RPI will be good enough that if you were to sneak in the SEC tourney, I think you'd get an NCAA bid. You may be able to have a good enough RPI without making the SEC tourney, but I don't know that they'd give you an at large if you didn't make the tourney. You're 2 games back of Auburn right now for the final spot. Problem is, you have Vandy 1.5 games ahead of you, between the two, and you have Kentucky tied with you, holding the tiebreaker. Not winning 2 of 3 from UK really hurt your chances.

You win that Sunday game and you are sitting 1 game back of Auburn, a half game back of Vandy, and 2 games ahead of Kentucky and Tennessee. Of course losing 2 of 3 to UT really hurt as well.

create multi-paragraph posts eloquently espousing the depth, breadth and nuances of suck attendant to MState athletics.

Todd, please carry on.

how exactly could that be a bad thing? I don't even think that possibility exists. Just like this past basketball season, being in the tourney is better than not, no matter what happens in it. your post is pretty stupid. i don't think we will make a regional anyway so it doesn't matter.

totally agree, making the tourney regardless of if you go 0-2 and exit is better than not.

How is making the tournament more embarrasing than not?

That would be just like saying we'd of been better off not going to Omaha and losing 2 straight UNC

ridiculous

Assuming we're a low 3 seed, we lose to the 2, Routt shuts down the 4 seed, and then we lose again to the 2 in a blowout.
