I can say w/ certainty that as many times as I was in there, I never would have recognized this building. I NEVER saw it in the daylight, only after 10:00 pm. Comments that were made said it was also "The Southernaire" in its earlier days but that was before me

Always about an inch of beer on the floor. It's a wonder it didn't rot out and fall in.

That's where my buddy found out their ain't no door handles in the back seat of a cop car. When cops went back in to get some more prisoners , we let him out and got the hell out of there.

Wish a picture of Len Lew's would surface one day (Echol's a bonus). I'd love to compare what's in my minds eye with what actually was.
Was it Len Lew's that turned into Doug's later? That would have been south of crossroads on 45.

My first trip to the Club, Freshman year, I tried to parallel park on the left side of the driveway leading in. I was crooked, with a little too much of the rear of my Mustang sticking out. While I was inspecting my poor parking job, 2 or 3 guys hopped out of the truck behind me, picked up the rear of my car, and slid it into place. There were still 4 passengers in my car.

The women were too scared to go inside after that. I was thinking a couple of big dudes like that would be handy to have around.
Sounds like you met the pulpwood contengent

My dad told me a long time ago that you could pull up to Echols back back in the 60's when it was just a produce stand and store. He said they had big jugs of apple cider out front of regular apple cider, but, you could go to the person at the register and ask for "some of that 'sweet cider' " and they would get you some moonshine they kept in the back. I don't know if that was Mr Echols place then or not. When I was being rushed before coming to school here I came up to some frat parties they had out in the big pasture behind Echols, kegs strategically placed all over the place, some bands playing, and lots of females. That was my first taste of college life, great times...........

Thanks, the one with the red P/U is close to what I recall. Had a big plate glass window in front is what I remember most for some reason. Did they serve food? I only went there a couple of times but heard the tales of the pasture parties. Seemed to be the frat choice, particularly SAE's versus Len Lew's.
LOL at "sweet cider", I'll bet. Different time, different world.

RIP Pickle. I had some great times with that big fella.
Here are a couple more Pickle/Club stories:
1. I was in there one night and it was absolutely packed to the gills and stuffy. I stepped outside to get some air. I was leaning against one of the posts at the end of the awning that started about 4 feet before you went up the steps to go inside when all of a sudden something popped me hard in back of the head. As soon as I caught my balance and stood back upright, I looked around ready to plant a beer bottle on somebody's face. That's when I saw some poor dude sprawled spread-eagle and face down on the gravel in front of me. I turned around and saw Pickle standing on the top step with his hands on his hips. Pickle had thrown that guy so far that when he passed by me, his foot hit me in back of the head. I'm 6 feet tall and I was probably a good 6 feet from the top step.

2. This one I didn't witness but heard second-hand. Pickle later told me that it was "mostly true". Anyway, a fight started in the parking lot one night and somebody decided they better take Pickle out before he got involved. They found him behind the building pissing and busted a beer bottle over his head. The story goes that Pickle didn't even break stream and told the guy "When I get through pissing, you're going to realize you just made the worst damn mistake of your life!" LOL

back in the late 60's Big Ben and Nomads played all the dances at Scooba Tech. I remember DD Lewis whipping *** at the AIRE. The black Lights were cool. Joe Cool was the Man. Alfred Wright owned the Southeraire I believe. Alabama folks were probably half he crowd-W girls and Prophead from the Base. The best Honky Tonk in the South.

My dad told us many many stories of DD Lewis fights at the Southernaire. He talked about that place often

I'm fairly certain I was there when that happened. Of course it could have been a different night where he got hit with a bottle.

I went there during the day a couple of times back in the day because someone lost something there. It was a dump back in 1980 already. I did get a bunch of free beer there. That was my biggest NCAA violation.

I did meet my wife there.
That’s when/how I remember it. 1980 had to be the peak though! Lol!
